Les Miserables Complete Symphonic Recording

I just got this CD today. What is the story behind this? Was this the original score? Or is this stuff added?

In the London Version, "Little People" is extended, but not in any of the other versions. How come it's not in this complete version?
Mademoiselle Lanoire

This isn't the original score, no. The original score was the 1980 French version, which is significantly different to the current show. They also trimmed a lot in the previews and early months of the London production, and after that there weren't any big changes for several years ('til 97, I think.)

Did you buy it used without liner notes?
Lazarus (Adam G)

It was from E-Bay; nothing came with it other than the CDs.

OK, in a nutshell, the CSR is a preservation of the show as it was performed in the US in 1988. I add all those qualifiers because London (and I believe Australia) was using different lyrics to the final battle and the exchange between Fantine and Bamatabois.

More or less, this is pretty much the show that was performed until 1997, when the 10th anniversary changes on Broadway were implemented -- different lyrics to Red and Black, addition of the well scene, etc -- and until 2001 when the overtime cuts were implemented.

Supposedly the idea for the CSR had come from a realization that a Sydney cast recording would've been too cost prohibitive (?!) and thus they decided to grab Quast, Warlow, and Byrne while they could and make the thing "international," although there is a noticeable lack of Canadians on it.

They should've just recorded the whole thing using the Sydney cast. The Aussies were the best preformers on the recording!
The Very Angry Woman

It would've been nice to hear Prior and Burke, too.
happyguava

Yeah, I agree. I loved the Aussie cast.

I don't know much about them but I made my prior statement based on the fact that they MUST be better than the cast assembled for the CSR.

Was Guest the original Sidney Valjean?

I'd love to have had her Cosette on it. She sounds lovely on 'The Secret Garden' Cast Recording and she'd have to be better than Tracy Shayne.

In my life, Also with Rob Guest, Peter Cousens and Silvie Paladino (Melbourne 1989)
