Les Miserables Homoeroticism?

Les Mis fandom is rife with homoeroticism. Was the underlying gay subtext invented in the new Barricade Boys blocking, or has homoerotic tension been a linchpin of the show since the beginning? Is it in the Brick?
Orestes Fasting

Look dude, we're fangirls. Imagining Enjolras and Grantaire having lots and lots of... subtext... is our version of imagining Halle Berry licking chocolate sauce off of Keira Knightley's thighs. Every fandom that has fangirls and fanfiction will have slash--and if you think it's a new trend in the Les Mis fandom, go to frenchboys.net and consider that most of the stuff there dates from 2003 at the absolute latest.

That said, the Brick is chock full of barricade boys having homoerotic tension. It's pretty blatant.

in my own experience it has been in the show as long as I remember.

When I first went to see it I had not read the book. Even more shameful: although I knew some bits of the brick by heart since 1st grade (french school, what do you want?) I actually did not know what the general plot was about. Even more shameful: i was one of those people who think that the story happens during the 1789 french revolution.
Well, I saw the show, I cried at all the convenient moments, I liked very much "on my own", and fell utterly in love at first sight with enjolras. But although I already had quite a dirty mind I did not see anything homoerotic.
And then, I read the book. And went back to the theater (exact same cast). And this time the subtext blocking just jumped into my eyes.
So I guess it has always been there, but you needed to read the book first to get it.

I know that shipping and slash are big parts of fangirldom. I was just wondering because of how blatantly the show has it indicated in the blocking.

Then again, given the BB's tendency towards improv, you never know.

That first time I saw the show was in the 90's. And the blocking was quite fixed. I don't think that those barricade boys had as much room for improvisation as they seemed to have, for example, during the revival.
The director was the original london director (i don't remember his name right now) and the subtext was already there.
Of course, some actors make it more blatant while in other cases it is more subdued.

When I first saw this topic, I was like, "Why is there a question mark...?"

I recall detecting homo erotica between them way back in the day. I felt dirty.

That is, until I discovered the fandom, and I wasn't alone, haha.

Gay Miserables. A new album by Scissor Sisters, creators of the disco version of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb."

All techno.
All disco.
All strobe lights and Ecstasy.
The story of a policeman who wants nothing more than to get his man in the end.

Coming soon.

In case there is still any doubt...
A little bit of E/R graphic subtext from the Duisburg production (and that was in the 90's):

bigR... I think I love you.
