Michael Maguire at law school grad (formerly: Enjolrases)

Okay, so this totally didn't warrant a whole new topic, but heck, I felt like it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VG0v7uCllcQ

So, so many Enjolrases I'd never heard before. It made me so happy. ... JOJ's Enjolras is flipping amazing. And why had I never heard Ramin Karimloo sing before? Those two, plus Aaron Lazar, probably constitute my top three now. Although, I hadn't heard Mike Maguire's "Final Battle" without the really unfortunate "rise" on the TAC. He sounds fantastic, too.

*geeks out*

Listening to it...

Isn't the plural of Enjolras Enjolri? Enjolratti? Enjolriiiii?

<3 Michael Maguire
Ooh, AW's "riiiise" was good.
Um. Didn't like Mauer.
OH WHOA. RAMIN. Whoa. Love.
Boooooo Oliver Thornton.
Aaron was okay. (*prepares to be pelted*)
EWWW Sarich sounds like... ew. Like a drunk pop star.
Aw, Max. He was sure pretty, but that wasn't great.

And then the font got too small for me to read.

Wait JOJ??? He's actually quite good! I like that one!

The end.
EponineMNFF

I love videos like this. I'm not sure which was my favorite... I actually enjoyed Drew Sarich's more than I remember last time. I'm very impressed by JOJ! I had only ever heard his Valjean. (I think they have an Eponine one similar when they compare "that I have never KNOOOOWN"s, but even I can't listen to all of those without getting a headache.)
Yakko

Mine was Anthony Warlow, Gary Mauer, and Drew Sarich.
That's it..
mastachen

Are people sure that JOJ was Enjolras? I went google-crazy but I couldn't find a date when he played Enjolras.

My favorite was Anthony Warlow, Aaron Lazar, and Ramin Karimloo.

He understudied the part at the Palace in 1997.

a.) I can't stand it when they DON'T yell "is freeeee!!!"

b.) I hate it when they SING "is freEeEeEeEeEe."

C.) My fave of all those was Stephen Buntrock
curlyhairedsoprano91

I love Aaron's. And JOJ's (Quique, I actually love it when JOJ sings the high B-flat on "free." Prolly just because it's JOJ and he's all "I CAN SING THESE NOTES.").

But Ramin's "riiiiiiiiiiise," like, gives me a heart attack. It's so flipping wonderful.

I also love Maguire. But he does this weird thing with his "r's" sometimes, like, they're way way back in his throat. It's probably just his accent?

Least favorite was Max Von Essen ... he just wasn't there at all vocally ... and then Oliver Thornton (similarly). And Drew Sarich's Enjolras is just ... not good.

...Maguire actually still sounds decent.

Because I've just done it with an ponines thread at the social club and the results were so interesting, I am repeating the experience.
I opened the link and I listened to the recordings without having a single look at the screen. Because we all are biased and the moment we see the name of a certain actor we are ready to like him or not to like him and this influences our veredict, so I did a "blind listening", I wrote a number for each enjolras, and besides it I rated his singing with + and - signs.

Of course, this only works if you have not listened to the youtube link before because otherwise you will remember more or less who was on it.

And the results were:

-My two absolute favorites were Michael Maguire and Aaron Lazar.

-I "discovered" Drew from the 1st moment, and so I was biased and, even more, amused. It wasn't that important though because his awful crazy enjolras is something so..., well..., crazy, that it deserves its own special rating or something.

-Turns out I didn't like Karimloo as much as would had expected. It kind of surprised me because I really like his Enjolras. He wasn't bad, but a couple of steps behind Maguire or Lazar.

- I hated: Edward Baruwa (YES! It wasn't my imagination playing tricks at the theatre), Oliver Thornton and, surprise, John Owen Jones! My + and - signs say that his "rise" wasn't bad but I hated the rest.

Now, if you haven't listened to them, go and try the "blind listening" with the ponines in the social club. It's crazy because there is a lot of shouting and they are 48 of them (yes, 48!), but the results are really interesting...

Which proves my point. The moment we see a name we are biased.
Quique

I'd have thought he sounded amazing even if I didn't know who it was. I was never a huge fan of his Enjolras. I much prefer Warlow. But he's excellent in that vid.
bigR

what I meant is that Soprano was ready to dislike him, because she knew who he was; without the "Maguire" written on the screen; instead of "decent" she would have maybe written "wonderful enjolras; who is it?" Wink
I don't speciall liked him before; but now I think that it was because of the Kent doll look he has in the TAC ; I like him better than Warlow; though...
(wait. are we really doing warlow vs. maguire? d'oh! Someone here who wants to do Frances vs. Lea?
curlyhairedsoprano91

BigR, but I really like Maguire's Enjolras! I actually did mean "really good" when I said "decent" ... I sometimes have a tendency to understate things. More in real life than online ... I guess it slipped out. XD

But really, Michael sounds great.
lesmisloony

But I thought soprano really liked Michael Maguire... you do, don't you, dear? That's the way I've seen her behave in the past.

Poor Curlysop. Everyone is misreading her posts, lol.

(I shouldn't talk though. I misread BigR's XD).

Wow he can still sing! That's great to hear. I agree with one comment that his low range is fantastic, better than his high range. Oops, I actually thought he was a tenor.

Maguire sounds great, but I still find his FREE a little too nasal for my taste. Warlow is a little bit rash in phrasing here, I think, RISE sounds great as usual. Can't hear Mauer clearly. Karimloo sounds decent, but there's something in his voice that I don't like that much. Hmm, Thornton is not that bad here, compared to his other performances. Like Lazar's RISE. Drew Sarich scared me. Love Stephen R Buntrock's FREE. David Bardsley and John Owen-Jones are both good, but I'm also not too fond of the high pitch singing FREE.

My favorite FREE moment should be Warlow's from the Australian concert, not just because his voice, but he looks really angry and powerful like a lion roaring.

That's what comes of making what career you have of singing out of your range ... we all thought he was a so-so tenor, when really he's a very good baritone.
Kragey

Anthony Warlow owns EVERYBODY. He is my male Bernadette Peters.

Although JOJ definitely gives him a run for his money.

JOJ's Allelujah is sex itself...*drool*

My sister said pretty much the same thing after watching him in a concert singing 'Kiss of the Spiderwoman'.

Wow! He sounds really good here! I love his lower range, I'm glad he's using it more. Smile

I repeated the blind listening experiment here:
http://es.youtube.com/watch?v=0om5Mu1lAuo
It's a "they will come when we call" comparision. And bloody hell, Maguire beated them all again (not aaron lazar here). He is wonderful!
I had no idea I liked his Enjolras that much. That Kent look has done a lot of harm to his reputation!
curlyhairedsoprano91

I did the blind listening as well on that one ... and I agree! Maguire was incredible, he got four "plus signs" from me.

I loved (and number of plus signs out of four):
Maguire (4)
Matt Cammelle (4)
JOJ (3)

I especially hated:
David Burt (0)
Oliver Thornton (0)
Anthony Warlow (1)
Max von Essen (1)
and Edward Baruwa (1)

Surprised about Warlow. I was kind of shocked when I went and checked the names against my ratings.

Some of these audios have got quite weird qualities, especially the one with David Burt. In my memory his voice is much lighter. Same with Anthony Warlow whose voice sounds deeper in other recordings. But sorta agree with you. I have always liked Maguire's "Lamarque is dead...", and I have always found Warlow too cold in this line, though overall I prefer Warlow to Maguire as Enjolras now. Among all these I also like Stephen R. Buntrock and Matt Cammelle.
Quique

Am I the only one who adores David Burt? I think he's brilliant. Of course, that audio is severely warped and the speed is about 1/4 as slow as it should be, so it makes it sound as if his voice is lower than it actually is.

I have a live audio with the proper speed and he's incredible.

I also love Stephen Buntrock, Matt, and Maguire.

Anthony is amazing on the CSR, but I've always wondered why he sings that last note lower on live recordings. Such a disappointment.

I didn't like him much neither. But I had already been surprised with the final battle comparision. I didn't like him there either.

And sorry, Quique, but I hated David Burt. He sounds crazier than Drew! Shocked

Ah, and studio recordings... we should never trust them...
curlyhairedsoprano91

I really can't get over how brilliant Maguire sounds in these clips. Don't trust the TAC!

Although he did not score as well overall, I think Karimloo has the best "call."

Quique wrote:

I'll admit he has a pleasant-sounding voice, but when I first heard him on the OLC (I believe that was my first Les Mis recording) he didn't really stand out to me, (then again, I was still very new to the show and didn't know much about Enjolras.) It wasn't until I heard Maguire on the OBC that I was like "woah! Who is this guy?! (This was in reference to both Enjolras and Maguire.)
bigR

Oh, I do like Burt in the OLC, but as I said I don't trust studio recordings... or at least, I don't think that it is fair to compare them with live recordings...

Well, I'm not sure it's trustworthy to judge them by live audios either. Live audios give us a chance to hear what we might miss in studio recordings, and there're people who sound amazing live but just average on recordings. But bootleg audios also have different qualities, like that one with David Burt, which kinda scares me, but he sounds different and decent in another audio. I remember I liked Gary Mauer as Enjolras in some audio quite a lot, but in that final battle comparison I could hardly hear him.
