Myself singing Stars. Feedback would be appreciated.

http://media.putfile.com/Myself-singing-Stars-Audition-in-23-days

As a previous topic of mine explained, I have an audition for the school edition of Les Mis at the end of the month, and I am going to kill for the role of Javert.

Here's a recording--I've made a few, I think this is the best take. Some notes are flat, the high notes aren't the best I've done them, the accent/style may be a little too affected.

Overall, what do you think? If you were a high school director, would you cast someone like me and work with me to polish this into a good performance?

I really like it. It seems as if you didn't get a few notes. Like "fallen from god" but it sounds pretty good. :] I hope you get the part. ;D

Overall, I think it's really nice, I especially liked your lower notes. Smile

Your higher notes could use a little work (it was mostly noticable during "I will never rest, til then...this I swear by the stars") and I also would suggest adding a little more emotion to your voice.

But other than that, it was a very good rendition. Break a leg at your audition! Very Happy

Anyone else?

Well, AS a high school assistant director here are a few things from me ...

Again, add more emotion. Seems to basic. Also, more dynamics are needed. You are very constant throughout the song but at the end you need to be louder. (that may be because of the recording, I'm not sure)

"You hold your course and your aim" That line can be dragged out a little longer. Seems like your cutting it off too soon or running out of air.

It seems to me you are being too sweet singing Stars. Like, you don't have that drive and determination that Javert needs for his role. Really, and I mean really get into character. You can let go of that seriousness at the end when you sing "Lord, let me find him ... " because you are not stating the facts of "I will find Valjean" and everything. He's asking for the help he will need. That is a time to get like that and then get right back into it before you get to "This I swear by, the stars!" But you need that drive that Javert has. I think if you can get that it will be amazing. Applause

Let me know if you need any other help prior to audition. I'm here to help. Very Happy

Sometimes, especially in the begging you were holding out the words (is that how you say it?) a bit too much. Maybe you could listen to the song and sing along not to compare your voice bust just so stop at the right place.
One other thing, really spit out the words so people can hear the lyrics. Since Les Miserables is all song and no words it is really important to get out the text so the audience gets what is going on.

Here is a link if you want to sing it with someone else:

Thanks for the feedback, but...

I have 12 recordings of the show. I know the song, I know how it's usually sung. I'm singing it as written--holding the notes out for their full value. I'm stopping at the "right place"--other performers just clip their notes longer. It's just a decision. I'm not "singing it wrong".

True, there is no way to sing it wrong as long as you're hitting the notes and getting the words...

I would hate to hear people sing the song exactly the same every time I see/hear the show.
InspectorDani

only time I would want to hear the song the same exact way would be when I'm listening to the CD's.

Yay for live theater. Actors present their own version of how they think their character is played and everyone has different ideas so a show is never the same.

Not bad, but you were off-pitch at some points. I noticed it more when you tried to sustain notes. Try making them shorter or work on keeping on pitch. Not the ideal voice type for Javert (you're more of a Marius), but considering it's an S.E. production, you sound just fine. Smile

Thanks.

Yeah, my voice teacher said the same thing about Marius. I might agree (though I suppose that at 18, any baritenor is going to be more of a Marius), but acting-wise, Marius is definitely not my type, as I usually play either a badass or comic relief (sometimes both). I'm expecting either Javert or Enjolras in a few weeks, either of which I would be happy with. I just don't think anyone else at my school has the knowledge of character or a close(r) voice type for the role.
