New Les Mis animeThere will be a brand new anime adaptation of Les Mis�rables in 52 episodes on January 8th, 2007. The show will be called "Les Miserables: Shoujo Cosette". That's all I know as of right now. Anyone else have more info?

Even if it isn�t, it will probably be available on fansubs created by anime fans. So I doubt that people really need to worry about availability. I don�t have high hopes from it. I picturing that after Cosette grows up, she�ll be transformed into a sugar high fan service machine. Eponine might fall victim to this too. Instead of being cute and hyper, she�ll probably be render to the serious and sexy counterpart. The only plus side is that anime tends to rake in a lot of fans, and it would be nice to see some new faces in the fandom. There was an anime adaptation of the Count of Monte Cristo that wasn�t so bad, but it did tamper with the original novel so I do have so bones to pick with it. I guess I�ll have to wait and see how this turns out though. |

To be honest, I wouldn't be that bothered if they completely ruin the story, we know that a bad movie won't kill it. I'm not even going to treat this like a proper adaptation, it's such a joke... A very cute joke though!

Eponine's only a major character in the musical, which this doesn't appear to be an adaptation of. It's funny, you never see people complaining about how M. Mabeuf got left out of this-or-that movie version, and he's possibly the character that gets shafted the most often in the movies. Oh, and if you think every movie leaves out a major character or subplot, check out the 1958 and 1982 versions. |

It's true she's not a major character in the book, but she's still a main character (or a secondary one at the very least) and the story just doesn't work out the same when she isn't in it. I hope they'll also add in other secondary characters that didn't make it into the musical. |

Her main function in the book's plot seems to be to create conflict for Marius and Cosette: to alarm Valjean into leaving for England, and to direct Marius off to the barricade. Both of these things can be accomplished without her, so cutting her out is... annoying and disrespectful to the book, but not OMG CRIMINAL. I mean, it's not canon-rape on the scale of getting rid of M. Gillenormand, or reducing Cosette to practically a cameo role and eliminating her upbringing and long courtship with Mar--
--oh, wait. I mean, obviously if you're billing your movie adaptation as faithful to the book, you have to keep Eponine in. But she's only essential to the plot in the musical's skewed version of events, and she is in fact not as important as most musical fans seem to think. |

With such a long book it would be near impossible to be completely true to the entire story without making the film 24 hours long. Eponine may not be that important to the plot, but in the films I've seen without her the love plot between Marius and Cosette did seem extremely lacking. |

Hmmm...that's where I'd have to disagree. Yes, technically, Eponine is not essential to the plot. And originally she wasn't meant to be a big part of it. HOWEVER, things change, and since the musical she has become one of the most beloved characters and is now essential to the fandom. So technically the plot could work without her, but how much of it is really based on technicality? If "most musical fans seem to think" she is important, then she is important. I do agree with you about Cosette though...it's annoying how she has to take a secondary role to Eponine in the musical.
From what I hear, the series is 52 episodes long so let's hope that's what they have in mind...
I don't think she looks that much like Sailor Moon besides the fact that they both have blonde hair and blue eyes. But unfortunately, I think I may know who Javert was modeled after...

Since Cosette's name is in the title, it should correct one of the big problems I have with the musical, which is that Cosette doesn't get enough attention.
However, I'm afraid she'll get too much attention. I will not be a happy mizzy if they scim over the Barricade part to consintrate on the Cosette and Marius love story. And another thing. They had better not mess with my Thenardiers. Having the parents there is usally standard... but they better have Gavroche, I'll be pissed if there's no Azlema, and God help the makers of this if there isn't an Eponine.... I guess I can survive if they leave out the two little nameless boys... But it would be nice if they were there! And lastly, if they pull some stunt like naming Claquesous "thug 3" or Laigle "Revolutionary 5", I'm swear, I'm going to fly down to Japan and we're gonna have some "words". |

Ooooh, thanks for the update! I just watched the little trailer and it's already piquing my interest! It's even sadder to see Cosette staring after Fantine with those huge, shiny anime eyes- awww...  It looks like they're including Azelma, too! Hopefully it'll be faithful to the book in all other aspects, as well. (Though, I wouldn't mind seeing more of Eponine, bwehehe. I know, I know... she's not all that important anyway, blah blah. And who's dog is that supposed to be?) Yay, I'm excited.

Yes, they are including young Azelma as well as grown-up Azelma which should be a nice change (at least I assume so because they had a voice actress for grown-up Azelma on animenewsnetwork.com) I'm not sure about the dog... I think it's just like a rule of anime because I have yet to see an anime series without a dog. |

The creators are obviously inspired by the musical version..Yeah, I just found out about this, too. It's starting on January 7, 2007, I see. I happen to be a Japanese, but I'm not too into animes... I hope Cosette doesn't sound too squeaky like young girl characters typically do in them. :-pAs far as I see its scenes, it looks like it's highly affected by the musical version, at least in the character designs. I wonder how they are going to expand the story of Young Cosette for 52 episodes. Too bad I don't live in Japan any more - I would have peeked at it if I did. They probably won't. It'll be two season's long (sense a typical anime season is 26 episodes) and I assume the first season's going to be about little Cosette, and the second when she's older. Espeacally since Cosette/Eponine/Azelma have two different voice actors, one's probably for the younger, and one for the older. I'm pretty excited about this, it seems to me their gonna stick to the book pretty well 
Also, I'm gonna trick my father into watching it. He refuses to give Les Miserables a chance because "Only gay men like musical" or so he says. But he is an otaku... Haha, Papa, I'm going to make you watch it and you'll love it for sure! |

The anime is supposedly about Cosette as a young child. So I don't think they'll get into the adult characters or anything, but who knows. The website has the following characters listed...
Valjean Cosette Fantine Javert Eponine Azelma Thenardier Mme. Thenardier Gavroche and some young guy who I'm not quite sure about. Perhaps a young Marius? Who knows. |

On the website they said it will be based on both the book and the musical (which explains the costumes). Maybe a little of the movie too because that Javert looks remarkably like Geoffrey Rush. |

It's quite funny when I see or listen to Les Mis in another language. Of course I have no problems with understanding other translations of the musical, but with this I actually was translating it (without any knowledge of Japanese) in my head. I just was telling someone about the first part and my description went along the lines of: "It was soo cute! Basically Fantine was going around Montfermeil with little Cosette looking for work, but no one would give her any because she didn't know what to do with Cosette. It was so sad because she knew she was poor, but Cosette didn't understand, and Fantine couldn't say no to her when Cosette wanted to buy a big piece of bread. The a man told Fantine that she could find work in Montreuil-sur-mer, but Fantine didn't want to have to take Cosette all the way with her... etc...Oh, by the way it was all in Japanese with no subtitles." At least that's what I think happened...I do like making up what I hear, it all makes sense in my head.

The anime deserves credit already for being one of the few adaptations that actually includes Azelma and Gavroche as a child (not to mention being the son of thenardier). Even down to the naming of the inn was accurate. It seem s light hearted with the inclusion of a puppy and a new character but other than that, suprisingly adorable and more detailed than any other film or television adaptation on the events shown. I was hesitant but Les Miserables being my absolute favorite book of all time and being a fan of anime, I dreamed about it and it looks like its getting the respect it deserves with 52 episodes. If it keeps including the details like it is now, I see this being a fantastic series and a beautiful new viewpoint of a classic. | ||||||

I have watched one of the videos, with the English subtitles, the part of Fantine meeting the Thenardiers and leaving Cosette with them. Overall, I liked it and thought the art was beautiful. I am looking forward to watching more, and I hope it is eventually released on DVD. Depending on what I think of the other videos, I might want to buy this series. | ||||||

Bumping up this thread to say that I watched some more episodes on youtube, before they were taken down. I think the teenage Cosette is sweet, Marius is cute though a little on the dorky side. Overall I like the characterization of Eponine so far. She is through and on the angry/bitter side yet emotionally friagle. For example, at one point Eponine gets into an aguement with her father and he gets rough with her. After she leaves and is alone, she starts crying. | ||||||

I've been watching, too. Too bad they had to take them down right before the episode when Thenardier's gang tries to rob Rue Plumet.
By the way, you would have gotten a kick out of Enjolras' characterization, OF. They made him quite the looker and did a scene with him trying to escape from admiring mademoiselles. Actually, all of the barricade boys are drawn quite well- all very cute! ....what, we're allowed to have crushes only on Disney characters?! 
Oh, and the official site shows that there are DVDs for sale. Do you guys know how we can purchase them? Or, could anybody who reads Japanese tell me what it says? They're probably not sold outside of Japan, but does it indicate purchases online anywhere? |

Yes, I've ordered from them twice and my friend has ordered a multitude of times. We have, however, only ordered CDs. I'm pretty sure their DVDs are a different region than those in the US. Hopefully someone else knows more on the subject.
Again, the shipping cost is awful...but if you buy imported items from another source (like Amazon) the end result will be the same because their price will contain the cost of the item and the cost to import it, on top of whatever shipping they charge. Glad I could be of help! -k |

Make sure that you have the search set to 'all' not 'titles' or 'people' when you search for 'Les Miserables.' You have to be very exact with that search or it doesn't give you anything. It drives me crazy!

I found a site where you can see the anime. I've already watched the first episode... Cosette was so unbearably cute. The site is www.crunchyroll.com . Unfortunately, you have to register but I think it's free, then search for Les Miserables. Only six episodes are up though...
