No anniversary concert this year either...

No Les Mis concert this year either
Mon 19 June 2006 | Written by Linn

Many of us have been waiting in anticipation for news of a new Les Misrables anniversary concert, after the success of the 10th anniversary concert in the Royal Albert Hall in 1995. When Les Mis turns 21 and becomes London's longest running musical this October, the devoted fans hoped there might be a big celebration. We can now bring you news on the celebration, but it's probably not the news you were hoping for.Ever since we started our London Les Misrables website (londonlesmis.co.uk) in 2000, we have received numerous e-mails asking us whether there will be a new Les Mis celebration concert, and when and where this will take place. Some may remember the spectacular concert in the Royal Albert Hall in 1995, starring Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean and Philip Quast as Javert, and fans had expectations that there would be another concert 10 years after this, when Les Mis celebrated 20 years in 2005. Nothing special happened on 8 October 2005, other than a special performance at the Queen's theatre with a school production performing after the show. After October last year, new speculations were that Cameron Mackintosh would rather wait until Les Mis' 21st year with the celebrations, since Les Mis will also beat Cats as London's longest running musical this year, and rumours were that the concert would be held in Hyde Park this Summer.
Many of us were looking forward to a nice day in Hyde Park, but unfortunately nothing special will happen this year either. The official Les Mis website has a notice now, saying that the 21th anniversary celebrations will take place in early 2007 instead, as they are prioritizing the re-opening of Les Mis on Broadway later this year. So, in the meantime we will just have to wait in anticipation for news of a celebration. Hopefully they will make it a big one!

Just great.

probably cost them too much for the 20th

Grrrrrrrrrr
Why oh why?
To tell the truth, the whole idea of doing something in Hyde Park may not have been the best choice, especially with English weather.
It could be like "Wow! How did they ever make 'A Little Fall of Rain' so realistic?"

That would've been fun though.

hmmmmmmmmmm.. I'm going to try and book tickets at The Queens. Then if I can I'll let you know. I couldn't do it a few weeks ago when I tried, the whole weekend was not for sale.

Yeah, and then Marius would be able to sing 'Empty Chairs at Empty Tables' with so much more feeling, too.
Come to think of it, though, there would probably be enough Les Miz freaks like us who would stay till the end. I would never leave a performance of it because of anything short of a hurricane.
Aimee

Yep. I just rang and booked tickets for the matinee on the Saturday. [7th]. Its a shame isn't it?

The anniversary is on the 8th... They don't do performances on sundays?

Shame, yes.
I suppose we got to have faith in Cameron Mackintosh, and hope he wouldn't let the 21st go past unnoticed!
I probably couldn't have gone to a concert in August anyway, so from a selfish point of view- perhaps a blessing in disguise.

Well, that kinda sucks. Not that I'd be able to attend the show...why does Les Mis never play in Canada? Grr Mad

It has been in Canada many times. In fact, they had their own tours.

You were probably just born too late, lol.

Is it bad that I'm annoyed by this?

Not annoyed that there won't be a 21st anniversary concert but annoyed that fans are still expecting another 10th anniversary-like concert.

Cameron already said numerous times that the 10th anniversary concert was a very special, one-time thing. It can't possibly ever be replicated. I mean physically, it could, but it won't be anything near what the 10th anniversary concert was in all other respects. There won't be a recording of it and it most likely won't be recorded for television at all. There have never been claims of another large-scale, 10th anniversary-like concert. This is all John Caird's fault for getting fans all excited with that 'Wembly Stadium' comment, lol. I don't think he was serious at all.

Notice that they never mention 'concert.' Fans are the only ones constantly mentioning it. Cameron and company have only mentioned 'celebration.'

But maybe I should hold my tongue. Once, I was nearly 100% certain that a Les Mis Broadway revival would NOT come so soon. Even when the news first came out, I was reluctant to call it a 'revival.' I kept reasoning that it was just a 6-month tour stop and not an official 'revival.'

Sh*t, I was wrong. Thank God!! lol.

I'm in the same boat. A lot of fans seem to have some kind of Entitlement Complex, whether they realize it or not. Cammack has spoiled Les Miz fans quite a bit, although they've come to expect more than he's ever shown he can or will give.

If it makes you feel better, I can think of a few alumni who were surprised at the revival, too. One I've been in contact with off and on says s/he has to always use quotes when s/he talks about it.

I don't think I have ever really felt entitled, though I did get caught up in the excitement of the 20th anniversary. Now, I have more of a wait and see what happens attitude.
