I'm Colm! Yipee Skipee!
Fantine

Hahaha Smile

Anyway, I'm sure they wouldn't have cast him as Valjean without a reason.
Orestes Fasting

If nothing else, I'm worried how they'll age him. Last time I saw Drew as Javert it looked like an exceedingly fierce fifteen-year-old was chasing Valjean around--he was a great Javert, but there was a certain amount of suspension of disbelief required. I can't picture him as seventy-year-old dying Valjean at all.
Fantine

If they can make a Gollum, they can do a Valjean.
The Very Angry Woman

Michael Minarik is taking over as Grantaire, and will be covering Thnardier and Javert.

Great guy -- I'm sure he'll be a lot of fun in all 3 of those roles.

Edit: Mandy Bruno's blog, where she also denies other firings. What?
Quique

Just got done reading a very interesting thread about this over at BWW, which I'm sure some of you know about.

Vocal steriods, lol. That was pretty mean.
dcrowley

I read the BWW post as well; People are pretty brazen with their rumors, and should watch what they say. It's stuff like that, that can be extremely hurtful to the psyche of performers.

I suggest everyone head over to BroadwayWorld.com and watch Richard Jay Alexander's interview with Lea Michell... She is such a sweet girl; she talks about the agonizing choice between doing Wendla on Bway or doing Eponine in the revival. RJ Alexander also mentions the possibility of a Les Miz movie. He talks about how he has a meeting with Cam Mack, and that they're going to talk about making the film version. He mentions the idea to Lea, and she seemed very excited about the idea. Sorry if this is OT, just got excited watching it/.

Quique

That was really neat, thanks!

I am both excited and nervous about the prospect of a film version. I just hope they do the show justice. They should really get working on it, though. It's been off and on in the works for years! I remember seeing an ad for the film version in my souvenir program when I saw the 1st national tour waaay back in 1991!

Well, it's good they're on speaking terms. I wonder who was responsible for RJA's dismissal at the time of the 10th anniversary.

There is only one way to prove that bigsis222 (both Multiply and M.N) IS Lea Salonga, you bunch of sceptics: When you see her in NYC after the show at the Stage Door of Broadhurst, ask her what her official multiply site and username in M.N are. I'm 100% sure she'd admit that both are hers. Smile

Hahaha! I guess I just took it too seriously! Heehee. Smile
EponineMNFF

If they make a Les Mis movie, part of my soul will die.
Fantine

Depends on what they do with it.

I would say "no" to something like Phantom, with regular actors (Patrick Wilson aside), but "yes" if they make a film with musical actors, who have actually been in the musical.
If they pick the best (like they did with the TAC) and put those all in one film... Squee!

Les Mis isn't too hard to adapt to the screen, I think.
eponine5

Drew Sarich as Valjean? I'm not really one to judge, but I am surprised at all the different parts he's playing/played. Has he set a record or something?

In the 'Stage By Stage' 1988 documentary Cameron Mackintosh mentioned a film of Les Mis being made...
I'm not so sure about it being at all easy to adapt to screen, and there are tons of scenes and lyrics which I find hard to imagine being set to screen intact, for example the entire Bishop scene. But I agree that musical theatre actors would be best for it. (As long as they take notice of actor's ages a bit better than in the TAC Laughing )
Quique

Fantine wrote:

Yes it is! I have thought about it time and time again, and simply can't imagine a film version that would actually work. I think most audiences would get up and walk out after the third weepy solo. This is truly a stage show - they are given a platform to express each of their feelings. This would simply not work on film, IMO.

Then again, I thought The Producers couldn't work on film, as well, so I guess there could be a major surprise. Though I'm not holding my breath. I just pray it's going to be as bad as the travesty that is the Phantom film version!
Colle

I think they should only do a film version if they can do the show justice. If not, I really want to see them do a production video of the show. Hopefully, if they do a production video, they can get Lea Salonga to play Fantine.
dcrowley

I would love to see Les Miz become a movie, like everyone said, if they can do it right. I agree that they should do it with accomplished singer/actors rather than big Hollywood names.

Oh and I liked the Phantom movie *hides

No. Find any Duisburg cast lists.
Monsieur D'Arque

As far as a Les Miserables movie, I know he's never been in the cast, but what about musical theatre vet Jason Alexander as Thenardier? Ironic, also, because of the infamous "Master of the House" episode of Seinfeld, where he couldn't stop humming the song.
The Very Angry Woman

Why are we treading the same old crap about the movie again, and in a revival cast changes thread, no less?

Or Berlin, for that matter. You have to wonder if Drew told someone "Hey, this is what we do in Germany!" and they decided to test it out on him.
What Is This Feeling?

Sounds horrible. I heard the revival is an absolute mess now. I saw it on November 15, 2006. All the original Broadway revival cast members. And I rather enjoyed it. But I just can't believe how everyobe left so quickly. What Ali, Alex, and Garry are the only ones left! Well, I guess that is because of the original 6 month run contract. Everyone was lovely when I saw them, except Vega, maybe she was fired, I know she left to do something at Labyrinth, but, idk. I dont think I'll go back now. I do hope it stays on though. Very Happy
Orestes Fasting

Adam was in the original cast too, and is still around. Most of the ensemble members are still there, too--Justin Bohon and Dan Bogart have been in and out lately, Kate Chapman and Victor Hawks are leaving, and Robert Hunt left a while ago but is now coming back to play Javert.

IMO the revival was in its best shape after DRV left and Lea replaced her, but before Norm, Celia, Aaron, and Jenny left. After the cast change it's just been pandemonium and while I've warmed to some of the new people, the only one who was actually an improvement on his predecessor was Ben. Who was dismissed. Go figure.
What Is This Feeling?

Exactly! I agree with your opinion of when the revival was in best shape too!I was just delighted though to see Jenny Galoway, as a boy growing up on The Drem Cast video, an d ofcourse seeing Original production about 6 years back, one of my all-time favorites Les Mis performers was Jenny! So seeing her wass a delight, although at stage door she smiled and left. I understand though, oifcourse. She is just so amazing! I met Garry Beach Norm Lewis, Jacob Levine (little Gavroche) lol. Garry was soooooo sweet. And Norm had like a convo with everyone. Took so much time.

Ok TVAW, I guess your right i'll try to not be so extreme. Lol, just every person on the Les Mis board and everyone I met asked hated her. Sooo lol, didnt think i'd be taken so literally.
TLKbroadway

So I am totally confused with the cast changes. Who will be ValJean the first week of July? I'll be seeing it July 2 & 7, so I do know that Javert will be different the second, etc.
Orestes Fasting

I assume Jeff Kready will be on until Drew can take over, since Victor Hawks, the other Valjean understudy, had his last show yesterday. Once Ben Crawford has the role prepared, he and Jeff will probably rotate. (Poor Ben; he and Drew are already rotating as Javert. If it were me I'd be singing the wrong part in the Confrontation every night!)

Orestes Fasting

Let's just say he needs the vacation. He's been going a little stale as Valjean.
The Very Angry Woman

I saw him in May and he gave one of the strangest performances of a Valjean I've ever seen. From the cackling before Who Am I? to the spastic jerking DURING said song, to making Elphaba-like hand-motions during BHH...and much, much more.

So mockable.
What Is This Feeling?

Oh, I enjoyed him. But yeh, definately I can see how that can become irritating. Really? Elphaba-like hand gestures during BHH? What Elphie specifically?! Lol

Any of them. You'd think Adam Jacobs had turned into the Grimmerie.
Quique

Maybe he was trying to vary his performance and keep it fresh?

Probably went overboard that night, haha.

I actually don't like when actors change their performance while doing long productions. I mean if they return to the role, yeh, but changing consistency?! Yucko!

I think it's great when actors are adventurous and try different things.

Some of what they try might not appease everyone, but it can also turn out great performances.

If you're not there every week, why should it matter? Besides, this isn't like popping a DVD into the player and knowing exactly what to expect. It shouldn't be the same when you go back.
What Is This Feeling?

Lol, thanks, um I dont want it to be like film TVAW,lol. Maybe its because I dont like seeing a performance twice (I mean by the same actors) Whatever it is redundant. I've never seen the same lead/ supporting cast wice ever, in any production. I like it like that. I'm just partial to that routine. Changin while in the midst of a production just doesnt swallow with me, im not saying tiny things, but doing complete different takes every week/ night, I just dont like it, if that makes me insane, lol thats ok.

My thoughts exactly.

Btw, when are you posting more pics of your production? I'd love to see more.
EponinesRain

trevorsanderson wrote:

I agree. And let's not forget how important the audience's role is in affecting the actor's performance. It's almost a reciprocal relationship b/c the performer responds to each audience differently to make each night unique. That's what I love about theater- that each night is (supposedly) fresh no matter how many times the performers have had to recite their lines. Too bad theater is a "endangered species" in media, what with the ability to watch movies on your cellphone, etc. I really like the public and community gatherings and that reciprocity with the performers.

Anyway, what was my point? Oh yeah...There's a difference between being consistent and being mechanically stuck in a role. From what I've seen on Broadwayworld.com, Alex is a brilliant singer and performer, but I guess he's now the latter? Maybe avoiding the 'rote road' comes with more experience. He IS pretty young, after all. Hrm, maybe i shouldn't comment until after I've actually seen him, heh!
The Very Angry Woman

EponinesRain wrote:

My problem is not that he was too young. It's that he was too strange.
TLKbroadway

Does anyone know the u/s schedule for Javert?
Quique

It's cool that I'm seeing Alex's final performance. Personally, I've liked what I've seen/heard so far.

I'm excited that Megan is doing Eponine now. Based on reviews, it looks like she's fantastic in the role.

I'm kind of glad I'm not seeing Gary Beach. I've already seen his Thenardier (on 23 June, 1989 in L.A.) and he was great then. I'm really curious about Chip Zien.

Can't wait to see Lea's Fantine. She sounds perfect in the role.

I've already seen Robert Hunt's Javert 5 times and really enjoyed his portrayal, though I kind of hope I get to see someone different this time.

I adore Adam and Ali's Marius and Cosette. I don't mind seeing Ali again, since I only saw her during the 2nd act at an L.A., 9 June tour performance last year.

Less than a month to go for my trip to NY. Can you tell I'm getting excited? Hehe.

I don't even think the Javert understudies do; it's such chaos over there.

I know they had a tentative schedule worked out, at least as far as Drew being able to tell his fans that he'd be on as Javert all weekend. But Ben Crawford was out (presumably ill?) earlier in the week, which might have screwed with the rotation a little. Let's all hope he doesn't have the Flu from Hell (*knock on wood*).

Thank you for the information. I guess I'm only seeing it once next week since Grey Gardens cancelled a show and I have to move around other shows, i.e. dropping one of the Les Mis shows, so I'll be seeing Robert. I am so dang excited. I seriously can't get too much of Les Mis. Smile Hope to see you there Lea!
Eponine93

Whoa... Drew is taking over the part of Valjean?

I haven't been able to get online in over a week. When did this happen?
Quique

Here I am at the Portland Square Hotel in NYC at 6 a.m. cause I can't sleep due to Wayne's awful snoring. Mad

Anyway! Saw Les Mis on Saturday. Don't have time to write a full review, but here are a few random comments...

Alexander G...I liked him. It was his final performance and the woman behind me came to see it just for him - she was sobbing like there was no tomorrow during the finale.

Lea Salonga...friggen amazing. So honest, so heartfelt, so perfect. I loved her so much. I have never cried so hard during her death. I had never seen a Fantine whose acting is so great, her appearance in the finale is doubly poignant. Bravo.

Our seats were ridiculously close. I really liked what they did to the set - the proscenium (sp?) is more elaborate, almost like London's.

I hated hated the new projection of just the title on the scrim. Tacky.

The new lighting was nice. Though, I didn't like how they lit up the set's back wall.

Robert Hunt is a great Javert. I didn't really want to see him since I've already seen him 4 times, but this performance was exceptional. His voice is incredible.

Chip's Thenardier was good. Though he still needs to get more comfortable in the role.

Orchestrations...ick.

Wayne fell asleep twice and mumbled loudly in his sleep during the show. I stabbed him with my Playbill so that he could shut up, lol. He was jet lagged, but liked it overall.

I cried buckets during BHH, Come to Me, and Finale.

The show was rushed like you won't believe. A lot of additional bits were cut, as well.

Ali's Cosette was even better (if that's possible) than when I saw her in L.A. My top Cosette next to Judy Kuhn. Adam's Marius was equally as great. They make a perfect couple.

More later...Smile
Orestes Fasting

Yeah, I heard Ali did a lot of character work on Cosette in the revival rehearsals, and it shows. She's doing a great job.
Quique

More random comments:

Ann Harada did indeed have the same voice characterization style as Mme. T as she did in Avenue Q. That sort of bugged me. Aside from that, she was uninteresting in the role.

I liked Chip's shady accent. It wasn't cockney sounding nor American. It was like a subtle cross between the two, or something. It was perfect.

Robert Hunt is much more masculine and stoic in the role now as he ever was before. I liked that a lot.

Alexander G did spit a lot, lol. But I didn't mind. He really gave a great performance. Not one of my fave Valjeans, but definitely not as bad as I thought he'd be. He didn't do any of the crazy things TVAW said he did when she saw him, hehe.

Megan McGinnis is a very talented, pretty gal but vocally wrong for Eponine. I did like her darker portrayal of the character though. Never came across as cutesy or pouty.

Max von Essen's Enjolras lacked the command required for the role. In fact, I'm having trouble remembering his portrayal. Guess he just didn't stand out, which is a very bad thing for this role. His vocals were attractive, but didn't project much. His acting was good. Nothing too special though.

I liked the iron gate thing they added to the orchestra pit.

The slight changes have never bugged me this much before. I guess I'm just so sick of seeing something different every time I see the show. It's like, FRIGGEN JUST STOP TINKERING WITH IT ALREADY!!! SHEESH!

As I mentioned before, the tempo was awful. Drained many moments of emotion and the disgusting orchestrations didn't help. And yes, the drums really are THAT bad - that's all you hear in many parts.

I noticed they added to the original 3rd national tour set - some of the walls were more detailed and some of their windows were placed in different positions.

The lighting changes were unecessary. Yeah, whatever, the wedding scene was pretty and all, but what's the point? It was fine the way it was lit before, why change it? It just seems they tried way too hard to "rejuvenate the show." As if anyone will even notice these tiny changes or as if they will have any effect on casual theatregoers. They're setting themselves up for rabid fans like me to tear them a new one, lol.

All in all, despite all my nit-picky ramblings, it was a good show. Apart from the orchestrations, it was still the Les Mis we all know and love. It was nice to lay eyes on that stage again and to see that wonderful story unfold in front of me. Smile

I'm interested to know what you thought was "dark" about Megan's portrayal. I saw her back in March when she was understudying Celia and while I agree that she avoided the common traps of being cutesy or whiny her performance reminded me of young Cosette grown up. Meek, cowed into submission and just as sweet as can be. I think Megan would have been better as Cosette.
Quique

I apologize, "darker" was definitely the wrong word. That was the first thing that came to mind though.

You're right, it had more to do with NOT being cutesy and girlishly. She was a very serious and sad Eponine. She didn't frolic about the stage and wasn't as cute as a button as many an Eponine is nowadays (even though Megan herself was adorable).

I liked her more than most Eponines I've seen recently, but her voice just wasn't as strong as the role demands. It was thin and feeble in many places, yet still pretty.
Eponine93

Erm... yeah, I'm not really on the Megan McGinnis loveboat either. She's talented and has a nice voice, but was completely miscast. She would have made a far better Cosette. I liked that she wasn't a hyper-active, cutesy Eponine but she definitely could have worked on her characterizations. Overall, I thought she was a rather bland Eponine with a lot of talent that could have been put to better use in the ensemble or in the role of Cosette.

Oh, he's a spitter, that's for sure.

I'm used to Hugh Panaro's heavy spitting...he got me right in the eye the first time I saw him in Phantom and then joked that's what I deserved for spending money on front row seats.

When Drew was in "Lestat" with Hugh, Drew really spit on him a lot during "After All This Time" and I admit it...I'd sit there and think, "Payback time!" Mr. Green

Laurel!!! You NEED to see Les Mis. I know you'd love it. Too bad you didn't catch the 3rd national tour when it was in L.A. last year. =(

Wait... if Nikki Renee Daniels is leaving and Lea Salonga's leaving for her Cinderella tour in October when JOJ comes... who's going to play Fantine?

I'm thinking maybe Haviland Stillwell. Since she's an understudy also.
Colle

Excited to hear about Rona returning; I got to see her as Eponine and I loved her in the role. I assume she is a Fantine understudy now too.

Whoever will replace me, I guess... no casting decisions have been made as of right now.

I think it just might still be playing. Tickets sales seem pretty good right now. Hopefully you get to see it!
herkind

I think it will. It's an open run and Les Mis sells well with tourists.

Hmmmm...from what I'm hearing of Drew's spitting tendancies, I can't imagine what the London stage will be like with the combination of him and Hans Peter Janssens. I might have to choose all my seats carefully.

You're leaving the show? Awww... I was hoping I would be able to go have a Les Misgasm seeing both of you on stage together at once...
Oh well.

Seeing you both live seperate is good enough, I guess.

Bummer. (At least I got to see/meet her back in April.)

Lea, if you're reading this, break a leg in your next project. Very Happy I'm sure you'll do great.

I know you mean this with the best of intentions but that sounds really really ominous.
aeschylean

Uh... how does that sound ominous? It's common to tell people to "break a leg" in the theatre world; in fact, saying "good luck" is considered bad luck.
mastachen

lol i know what it means. i just meant in the literal sense, it doesn't sound very nice.

I'm totally jumping the gun because he just started rehearsing the role today... but if any of you folk happen to see Anderson Davis as Enjolras--or, heaven forfend, know any dates when he's scheduled to go on--I demand details. I've seen him in a few ensemble roles and YouTube clips and been rather impressed, and now I'm curious to see what his Enjolras will be like.

(No, no surprise cast changes, Max is still principal. Anderson's just replaced Nehal Joshi in the ensemble and is taking over his understudy duties.)

Actually, I have a barrage of understudy questions. XD Is Rona Figueroa going to be covering Fantine? Has Cortney Wolfson gone on as Eponine yet? Has Minarik gone on as Javert yet? Will Jeff and Ben be rotating as Valjean in the week between Drew's departure and JOJ's arrival? When does Drew leave anyway?

And yes, I realize these questions are mostly rhetorical. Laughing I don't think even Drew knows when he's leaving--only that it's sometime around October 11.
Trevor

I would KILL to see Courtney Wolfson as Eponine.
herkind

Ooh, Anderson Davis! I saw him as Montparnasse back in March and he was great! Yay, for pretty blonde Enjys! When's the last time we had one of those?

I would assume since Rona's picking up Nikki's track that she'll understudy Fantine. It's following Cammac's Eponine to Fantine trend. Wink

Also, IIRC Megan rarely ever misses so I doubt Courtney's gone on yet. Is she the one that was hired just out of college or something?

Hm, John-Andrew Clark? Ben Davis? A few of the European guys too; Martin Pasching comes to mind.

And yeah, I admit it, I get fantastically excited when I see actors who resemble the book versions of their characters--either in appearance or interpretation. Which is why I adored Celia's Eponine, and which is part of why I want to see Anderson so badly.

Come to think of it, I've never seen Megan miss a show. And I've seen the revival over thirty times.

I do believe Cortney's fresh out of school. If you Google her one of the first things that pops up is a fabulous clip of her singing "Blue Hair" for a school benefit concert.
