Les Miserables on The Isle Of Wight videos and such...I wasn't sure whether to put this in the cast change thread or a new thread, but seeing as it's not really related to the cast change, I thought I'd give it its own topic.So firstly, I would like to say it was abolutely fantastic! The tickets said that the gates of Osbourne House didn't open until 6pm, the concert was starting at 7pm so we got there at about half five. TO MY UTTER DISMAY the gates were already open and people were flooding in. However, luckily, I marched up the lawn and found a nice big spot in the second row back and despite the people in front uf us having HUUUGE umbrellas (yes, it was raining.) we had a rather good view. It was all so good I don't even know where to start. First we saw all the male members of if the cast walking towards the stage in their suits, it looked as though everyone got the memo to wear a grey suit except Woody, who was practically luminous in his bright white suit. When they all got up and started singing the prologue, I for some inexplicable reason got a terrible attack of the giggles, I think it was because they were all in suits and I'm used to seeing them in costume, anyway, I soon got over that. I quickly realised that musically in was exactly the same as The 10th Anniversary, so a lot was left out, but happily "Let's give them a screwing they'll never forget!" was in it Allyson Brown sings better when she's not trying to act. John Jo Flynn's "I smell wooooooomen" at the beginning of "Lovely Ladies" is hilarious and has me laughing everytime. Master Of The House was absolutely brilliant. Firstly Jackie messed up her words at the end of Castle On A Cloud, but that was totally eclipsed by Jimmy Johnston epically forgetting the majority of the lines to Master of The House, he was trying to get the rest of the cast to join in with him, but they were mainly too busy laughing, so he started making up lyrics, eventually a laughing David Shannon walked over to him with a script and gave it to him. Johnston threw it on the floor and by the second verse of the song he was back on track. I realised how much I prefer Jimmy and Jackie to the new Thenardiers. Jimmy and Jackie have amazing timing and Jimmy is really very very funny. (Also, we recorded the whole audio, so although I don't have the epic mess up on video, the audio will be on youtube at some stage) Leanne Dobinson wasn't there and Tabitha Webb was playing Cosette (YAAAY!) I was ever so pleased about this because I've always prefered Tabitha to Leanne and it was nice to see her again as Cosette. She was wearing a nice dress. I always forget that in 10th Anniversary-esque concerts that Eponine just seems to turn up in In My Life with absolutely no introduction. It's a bit "Ehh?". Thaxton was very vocally on form. (His rise was fantastic. Hur hur hur. Sorry, I'll stop doing that soon.) however, when he wasn't actually performing (I should point out at this point that it was also a 10th anniversary sort of set up, when not performing, the rest of the cast were just sat along the back in chairs) he seemed to be a bit... odd. He was a funny pink colour and kept closing his eyes, and then looking like he was about to cry, and every so often he'd reach into his jacket pockets and eat stuff out of them. I was amused. The final battle was awesome! Even funnier that Thaxton decided to do his fist clenching and constipation face for "IISSSS FREEEEEEEEEE!" (video shortly to be uploaded.) There's more I have to add, but for the moment, please have the first two videos I have uploaded. 1. Look Down - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoBOtJJ51Tg (This one's quality isn't actually great, all the others are better.) 2. Attack On Rue Plumet - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-IjBQk2yqM (for attention of Lesmislooney, look! It's John Jo!) There are a good few more to come. And photos! |

*also dies* Thanks a lot! So Thaxton was sick? |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Madeleine |
That was pretty much my reaction. Still trying to gather my thoughts, but THANK YOU! |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Jaym |
I have the 'still trying to gather my thoughts' feeling too. I just showed the clips to a Les Mis loving friend and usually she'd be dying of laughter because I'm so hyper. Now I can't possibly voice how epic those clips are, so she's probably now wondering whether I'm ill.
I love you for putting these up. |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Elbow |
I'm couldn't be sure whether Thaxton was ill... He looked a bit under the weather, but if he was he didn't let it hinder his performance. For all I know, he might have just been closing his eyes and appreciating the music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLOkCawE8Lo Final Battle! |

Eppie-Sue |
you added the Final Battle. sorry. THE Final Battle. And you guys applauded and I already said so on YouTube but I will say it again I love you all. and now I shall listen to it till I fall asleep.
Madeleine |
Thank you so, so much!
Having Mark Dugdale, DT, Killian and Gavin in the same video like that is amazing and I love you. I'm just a squealing fangirl mess right now |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKANC-usLFM Building The Barricade/ Javert's Arrival. There were some people behind us who kept cheering for Killian, which although is perfectly understandable, I got the feeling they didn't actually know him. Edit: And apparently I have lost the ability to spell. |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Eppie-Sue |
oooooooh the part that was cut.
DO NOT BE AFRAID. yes. and I love, love, love the "Let's give them a screwing they'll never forget". I mean, the line in itself is epic, but omg have you seen Woody bouncinga bit and the exchange of glances there? love. |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Jolllly |
Thank you so much for posting these. So much win. Man.. X_X
EDIT: Does DT always do that with his arms with the "ISSSSSS FREEEEEEEEEE" bit? I've only heard audio of that so far. But if he does that during performances, then he is just unrealistically perfect as Enjolras |

Re: Les Miserables on The Isle Of Wight videos and such...
That's an understatement. She had a tantrum. I felt that needed to be said in public. The concert was indeed fabulous though. It rained for pretty much the duration, which was saddening; but at the same time we were lucky that it was more of a drizzle than a downpour and so could manage without an umbrella. I think Elbow's covered everything really, though. Woody's suit was stunning, John Jo's smelling women was it's usual laugh-inducing self, Jimmy's rendition of Master of the House was completely hilarious and it was just a thoroughly enjoyable day-trip.
He does, yes. But I think he's gradually been getting more enthusiastic about it as time's gone on... |

oh, he does. |

Thank you so much for your review and videos!
My favourite part?! (Even though it was all amazing!) Was Thaxton doing my favourite Final Battle ever then just walking off as if he has no idea about how awesome he is! He's way too cool for school! |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Eppie-Sue |
seconded.
The Finale made me cry, aww, there they go, my first real cast, seeing as I can't remember the one I saw ten years ago. Say, was that the last video? Or ... dare I ask... is there even more? You're amazing for putting these up, again. Love. |

I think there are a couple more. There's also the audio of Jimmy singing Master of the House - if he can be heard over our laughter.

One Day More Encore Love Supreme. it must have been so utterly fantastic. and LOL over Gavroche on the chair. and did I mention I love it when there's applause during ODM at special performances? xD and Earl Carpenter totally sang along during the "One day to a new beginning [...] Do you hear the people sing?" bit... haha. |
||||||||||||||||||||||

I got some serious chills from that. And Thaxton about killed me with his awesomeness. Thank you so much for posting these!! |

guys, i seriously LOVE you for posting these!
can't wait to see/hear anything else you post? did i see you promise photos too????
ditto! I also love the crazy running around during Rue Plumet. Sigh. Such an awesome cast Just wondering, how were Jon and Nancy during their solos? would have loved to see those live |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Eppie-Sue |
haha, YES. If I hadn't died already over "BEFOOOOOOORE THE BAAARRICAAAAAADEEEES ARIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISE" I might have died laughing there. Killed dead with teh blade of lulz. um, I fangirl the One Day More Encore Video. And I lost it at 00:25 and started clapping along xD pathetic, I know. and now that I can think a bit more normally again after Epicness Overkill, I can't wait to hear the MotH hilarity. ETA: and I'm weird for noticing this, but THE Final Battle totally has the most views. *nods solemnly* |

I'm glad everyone enjoyed the videos Sadly those are all the videos there are. I wish I had more, I should have just recorded the whole thing.
Sadly not, there might be a few photos though, and we do have the audio.
There are photos too, yes, but not on my camera. They will be posted though. |
||||||||||||||||||||||
HobNob |
You weren't supposed to be filming at all. They did mention that right at the beginning There are a few photos. Camera's crap, lighting was crap, didn't want to flash in their faces (ooer) etc. Also didn't want to spend the whole concert concentrating on taking photographs. I'm very aware that there are many cast members who weren't photographed at all. But too late now. |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Eppie-Sue |
OOOOOOOOOOOOOH PHOTOS pretty! thank you!
And awww no more videos. But you know what that means, right? I will pester you with questions... nah. But during "ECAET", did the students actually walk up behind Marius? I'm guessing not, seeing as they really only seemed to have those who sing on stage at any time (not like the TAC), if I interpret only having Mark, Gavin, David and Killian standing for THE Final Battle correctly. (I mean, it was not a Les Mis performance, regardless of the epicness.) What was "Red and Black" like? Aaaand did they start the second act with On My Own (like TAC)? Thank you so much again, especially considering filming was prohibited! thank you! ETA: aww at the ALFOR pic. And I love Nancy's dress. And DT's socks *points* xD just saying. |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Elbow |
But luckily, as usual, I wasn't listening. Therefore, I didn't know any better. Yup. |
||||||||||||||||||||||
HobNob |
You guess right. No-one moved. I'll let Elbow deal with Red and Black. She's the Thaxton person
Yes. I laughed when Javert died, just because 'There is no way to go oooooooooooooooooooooooon...' *step back from mic., saunter back to seat*. I do feel it loses something without the corresponding actions. |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Madeleine |
Lovely photos, thank you! Especially the one of Mark and Woody. <3
I kind of felt the same about the Final Battle video. Having them all just walk back to their seats seemed like a bit of an anti-climax, during what is usually the most dramatic part of the show. I know it was a concert and they couldn't do much, but at least having them stay standing there until the end of that piece of music would have been a little better. |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Eppie-Sue |
I don't know... just with the three of them standing there for a minute? It would have felt a bit awkward I think. And yeah, of course Javert's and Enjolras' [and, overall, the students'] deaths do not look as impressive as they do on the musical stage... but THE Final Battle kind of made up for that
Did they play the "The Aftermath" bit? The BHH reprise?! |
||||||||||||||||||||||
flying_pigs |
Thanks for the pictures!
I fangirl David's socks... ...is that weird?! |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Madeleine |
I was thinking about how they did it for the TAC, with the students standing there and the lights doing a chase. That was still awkward, but not quite as awkward as this one looked to me. I guess budget contraints come into it too, as the TAC was pretty huge, with the video in the background and fancy lighting design. I notice even the rest of the cast seemed very impressed by THE Final Battle, and they've been hearing it for the past year. It obviously never gets old! Flying_pigs, I hope fangirling DT's socks isn't weird, as I've been doing it since the photos were posted too. |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Eppie-Sue |
But yeah, that's the TAC. It was dark and they could really use the spotlights. And they were in costumes. And they had all the students on stage. And they even had gunshots. So that was another set-up. I like that it's very... unobtrusive, really. And then everybody APPLAUDS. I get all fangirly and clap, too (like a small overexcited child), when I watch the video. The "Germany" spot on the "Where is this video most popular" will be black in no time.
re: the rest of the cast: YES. ... Gavin and Mark applauded and smiled at him. I'm just saying. and I have unleashed a new era of fangirlishness with my socks comment, eh? xD oh man. |
||||||||||||||||||||||
miraclemile |
I feel like I should be dragged from my usual lurking just to agree with everyone else and say you are amazing for posting all these! Thank you so much!
...and the socks, oh the socks |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Fantine |
Where on earth can you see his socks?
Eppie-Sue |
in the fourth pic from the top, the ALFOR one. ... I have created a monster by pointing them out, apparently. |
||||||||||||||||||||||
tashmercer |
Good for us that you missed that bit thanks again for the videos! soooo awesome! I love the ALFOR photo - esp the reactions of the cast watching but..... what's with the boys suits? Thaxton looks like he's almost bursting out of his and a whole bunch of the suits are half undone and ill-fitting. More evidence that these guys need a pay rise...... |
||||||||||||||||||||||
lovesinging |
But we all love you for it |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Eppie-Sue |
which is actually really strange seeing as he's the absolute opposite of stout. It's the shoulders (waving that flag eight times a week will do that to you)... And I noticed the same thing about the suits. Hm, and regardless of that, I second the call for pay rise. As in, now. Watched the ODM Encore video to wake me up and ah, I love the applause (and their reaction when it actually starts ). Because, normally, you just get that at really special performances - when the show is closing. Which, hopefully, won't happen anytime soon in London (not with ticket sales through the roof anyway), plus, that's a rather sad occasion. And this is perfect... they get their well-deserved applause during the song and there's nothing sad about it... except for the old cast members, but seeing as they've already said their good-byes a month ago, there's not too much melancholy mixed with it. |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Fantine |
Oh yeah! I have socks similar to those |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Eppie-Sue |
Okay, moving on from DT's socks xD (I love this forum)
They changed the "Look Down" lines for the concert! I don't get it. See, of course, in the original (and the most commonly known) version, Marius' and Enjolras' first lines go like this:
Now, in the current London production for a few years now it has always been the other way round:
(thus leading to me fangiring DT's "beloooooow!") However, in the Isle of Wight video, it's back to the original version again: DT sings the first lines about "the leaders of the land" and then Jon Robyns goes "Only one man" etc. HUH? |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Elbow |
Because the whole... what's the word for it... score? The whole score was exactly the same as the 10th Anniversary, plus the lyrics and who sang what, thus they swapped lines.
Eppie-Sue |
Yeah, no, I get that the score and the cuts and everything was like TAC. But I still think it doesn't make sense for them to switch the parts when the other version is all they have done for the past year - simply for one concert. I mean, the orchestra is not affected by it at all... hm.
oh, and I hope you don't mind me asking - again: What was "Red & Black" like? oh, and "Drink With Me"? |
||||||||||||||||||||||
tashmercer |
Oh! and "Lamarque is Dead"! Did it have the same epicness as THE Final Battle? I heart DT's "CAAAAAAAAALL!!!" |
||||||||||||||||||||||
tashmercer |
it's a mystery.....

I can't believe how many posts I just read about socks *facepalm*. I do feel the evening must have been wasted on me, for I noticed them not.
I'm still going to say that Elbow'll have a fuller recollection. She just has to actually read what people are asking... |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Elbow |
Hum. Red and Black. You know, I think that was when I was fiddling about with the camera on my phone and then I realised I was spending more time fiddling with various pieces of technology than actually paying attention.
The only thing that stuck out, was that after his bit, Jon Robyns went and sat down for the rest of the song and Do You Hear The People sing. That seemed weird to me and I didn't understand the point of that. Thaxton's CAAAAaaaAAALLLLLL was good. He had constipation face on. And he kept patting people. He likes to pat. Gavin and Thaxton seem to pat each other more and more frequently as time goes on. John Jo did not do ballet kneel flag presenting at Gent. That was saddening. And Drink With Me... Gah! It's too long ago now. What has happened to my memory!? All I remember was sitting there thinking "Oh no, this is the last time I get to hear Woodford sing this bit " |

OK, so I had to join this community just to comment on this post because I was there and it was amazing. I'm relatively new to Les Mis (the concert was 2 months after I'd first seen it - and I've lived in London all my life - its SHOCKING), so this was my cast.
We were about four-groups-of-people back or so, not a bad view, and we spotted Mr Thaxton's socks of awesome from quite early on in proceedings -- tis his own fault for being the only guy during the whole thing to cross his legs!! Him and Jon were so cute, before Look Down they both had a drink and then there was a manly handshake, and Jon was the first to start a huge round of applause for David after his last big note. Oh, and they [David & Jon] had matching suits - and so did John Jo Flynn and Matthew Gent. (3 girls and 2 gay guys - we're gonna notice this stuff!) I think I'm right in saying Richard Woodford's suit glowed?!? It was totally worth the rain. And the fact that we ended up on the same deck as the cast on the ferry back, and my friends had to restrain me from pouncing on them all. Jimmy and Jackie were awesome, as always, and Earl and David were nothing less than incredible. I have some videos that I've not youtubed yet (and I have an audio recording with slight rain soundeffects because of the umbrella my bag was under!) |

Of course. I would have been a crying, laughing, generally batshit crazy mess.
I have calmed down to the point that there are no fireworks exploding in front of my eyes and in my brain anymore, so now I can comment a bit more coherently. I think.
xD They have been christened The Socks Of Awesome now.
I love Jon. Have I mentioned that? No? Then this seems to be the right moment to say it. I love Jon and I miss him. And awww.
xD judging from the videos. He's very sparkle-y.
... oh my. So - what was that like??!
this is making me more happy than it should, really. : ) Thank you so much for joining and reviewing. And gushing. |

aquirkofmatter |
Pretty much spot on, there!!
You could see some of the others' socks as they stood up/sat down, but David was the only one who'd gone stripey. Bold move. Socks of Awesome. [And from looking at my photos/videos it would appear we were a bit further back than 4 groups, but we were in the centre by the path so my view was completely unobscured and I was in my own little world anyway].
I love Jon - he's the reason I went to see Les Mis in the first place -- and the first time I went we had his u/s!! So he's not the reason I fell in love with it. But I really do love him. I was like one eye on them at all times, they were whispering and joking and during Beggars at the Feast Jon was doing some crazy clap-dancing-thing and David was like *ohdear* and then he pointed at my friends & I (because while everyone else was clapping, we were waving our glowsticks like mad people) and Jon burst out laughing. I'm really worried about going to see it next week because Alistair and David just won't have the same relationship - David&Jon are quite obviously almost-BFFs [and, of course, Alistair isn't Jon...]
I think he's practicing looking like an idiot for when he joins WWRY.
TOTALLY AMAZING. It was like the perfect end to the night, I was just staring. Blatantly. My friends went to get coffees and when they came back Daniele said "One of the ensemble guys was just chatting me up" and I went "HUHTHEWHATNOW?" And they were sitting like 5 metres away from us. Well, Jon + a lot of the ensemble were - I didn't see Earl anywhere, David Shannon was talking to some people who looked like family a little way away (but still in eyeline), there was another group of mainly male cast people sitting next to the shop (I spotted them on my way to the loo), and David Thaxton & Nancy were on their own table just to the side of the first group. And they [the biggest group and David+Nancy] were sitting under a mirrored ceiling, so I was watching everything they did. I would say they'd had a few drinks - John Jo in particular!! He kept jumping [literally] out of his seat and from what I could see it looked like he was proving he could touch his toes... Very, very random.
I've put a couple on youtube; I do have some more but those [and Stars, which I haven't upped yet] are my only full songs, but I do have some part-songs of Thaxton loveliness! My memory card on my camera is tiny and I had to make a decision as to what I'd record and what I wouldn't The really horrible thing is I had my videocamera in my bag, but when they said no recording my friends wouldn't let me get my tripod out and stand it on there [cos if I'd held it it would've been a complete and utter wobbly mess] so I had to make do with my camera. And even then they told me off for recording things. Silly peoples. None of the stewards did though - I don't think they really cared, tbh. |
||||||||||||||||||||||

Thank you for the videos. And for those to come! (just a quick link to One Day More for everyone) And I know the woes of small memory cards, but it's better than nothing! : )
Seeing as socks are the only thing not restricted by dress code, they are The Rebel Socks Of Awesome. and my oh my, the ferry . Would I have fainted? I don't know. Probably. But lucky you! And I assume the mood was generelly great? Or were they just tiredtodeathomgwehaveashowtomorrowexhausted? |

They were all really buzzing, actually, give or take one or two of them. Loud, that's for sure! Although I think that the noise was pretty much just John Jo! And when they walked into the shop-y bit they all went straight for the booze, not the coffee! Definitely a good mood! A lot of them were on a coach together, so they were prolly a bit hyper from the ROAD TRIP! lol |

I am rather late in posting my memories/thoughts about the IOW concert, but I have been hesitating to post and expose my ignorance of Les Mis compared with many of the very knowledgeable people on here. But here goes.
I saw Les Mis for the first time last November, dragged along by a friend who is a very enthusiastic Jon Robyns fan. Jon was great, but I was absolutely blown away by the whole cast, and especially by David Thaxton (who, needless to say I had never heard of), who I thought had incredible charisma.........actually I thought he sang and acted Jon Robyns off the stage but I didn't dare say so! (I do love Jon though.) Anyway, I went along to the IOW concert not quite sure what to expect, and my spirits plummeted a bit when it started to rain right at the beginning........but what an amazing concert. Loved it. Everyone was great; Jimmy Johnston was hilarious, Richard Woodford was LUMINOUS, Gavroche was ultra cute, Tabitha Webb was way better than Leanne had been when I first saw it, Thaxton was awesome (didn't notice the socks though), and Jon was lovely as always. (I was a bit disconcerted to read on here that people thought that Thaxton was ill because he was rather a funny colour........thinking about it he was rather pink, and he hair was rather blonded...he looked as if he had had a bit of a makeover actually; not that he needs one, of course! A rather cute moment was when Gavroche stood up and walked forward for his first solo part; as he returned to his seat he and David exchanged a surreptious "high five" as if DT was trying to encourage him and give him confidence - not that he looked like he needed it!) DT and Jon chatted away happily for much of the performance, but also looked as if they were really enjoying the whole thing. In fact it was the lovely atmosphere of the performance - the whole cast really supportive and appreciative of each other - that helped to make the evening for me. (I must just add that if I recollect rightly DT had the biggest round of applause from the rest of the cast!) I realise I haven't added much to peoples knowledge of the event with my Thaxton droolings, but I want to stress that it was a brilliant event. I understand that this was a bit of a rarity, but if you ever get the chance to go to a concert performance like this again (especially in a beautiful setting like Osborne House), then do try to get there - I know I will. |
