Adam Jacobs, other Marii and other things

I just felt like starting another pointless thread.

I've been rereading a few old reviews of the revival, here and elsewhere, and I've noticed several people comment on how distant Adam Jacobs' Marius was with Eponine. But I didn't think he was all that distant with her: sure, he didn't seem close-close to her, and was obviously not attracted to her and uncomfortable with her flirting, but he always seemed to have some affection for her, was never condescending and seemed genuinely upset by her death. The role can certainly be played more stand-offish than he did (i.e. Daniel Bogart).

So I started thinking: if some people were surprised by how stand-offish Adam seemed with Eponine, than what must the Marii they were used to have been like? I came into the fandom fairly late and had only seen two other Marii before Dan and Adam, so I don't really know how close to her he typically comes across. Has anyone here seen a professional Marius (or more than one) who just seemed way too close to her?

On a semi-similar note (or maybe not), what are some of the worst examples you've seen onstage of the Amis coming across as naive little schoolboys who throw their lives away for nothing, with Grantaire being the only one who "knew the truth"? I haven't seen the show enough times to name really good examples, but I'd say the worst example I've seen was the Grantaire I saw in London, 2004- talk about bitter toward Enjolras! Talk about a Pylades who resented his Orestes and seemed to blame him for everything that was happening! Any other examples like that or worse?

For some reason, I'm curious about performances that would have made Hugo spin in his grave.

Not way too close, but most of the other Marii before Adam and Dan treated her like a little sister, or the friend who just kind of hangs out. Stephen Brian Patterson was probably the best example of this -- they were close and he thought she was fun, but she wasn't much more than his buddy.
