There was something in the Pittsburgh production's playbill about it being one of the last regional productions before a moratorium takes effect due to a US tour in 2010. No details about this tour have surfaced yet, though. | ||||

There is going to be a school edition near where I live next year. I do wonder if it would be worth it to go or if I should wait for a regional production. I have plenty of time to think about it because the production is about a year away. I am not sure about the cuts to the show in the school edition. | ||||

Reviving this thread a bit, as someone has posted on the WoS discussion board with a link to an article in a Chicago newspaper (if I'm not mistaken) stating that the Les Mis 25th anniversary tour will perform there in Jan. 2011 (there were specific dates and all).
Since seeing this I've been googling relentlessly but haven't found anything with official-sounding information about a US tour, where it might go etc. I'm sure once there is really properly official info it will show up on the Les Mis website, but as none of it is there as yet - has anyone heard anything additional about this? |

LES MIS�RABLES is currently on an international tour, visiting Cardiff, Manchester, Norwich, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Bristol and Paris and has already sold out in most cities with extra performances being added. The new LES MIZ will open in the U.S. this fall.

Ok, just to say that I just got confirmation from the local theater in my city (this is the theater that hosts all the Broadway tours etc.) that they are aware of the Les Mis tour and are actively working on getting it to the city - and they think it is likely it will be part of their 2011-2012 season (so not this fall but next fall!)
Still nothing really definite, but at least some confirmation that they are working on it, so something to hope for.

I know this isn't completely related, but under age appropriation, it says "Family". Surely a show about prostitutes, convicts, revolutions, and most of the main characters dying isn't a good representation of a "family friendly" show? Just a thought. Also, when are they ever going to stop their Dream the Dream ads?! |

I hope the tour comes to my city, they have announced the 2010-2011 season so I am hoping it does come in 2011-1012. I am interested in seeing the new look up close.
It does make sense that they have a casting call, they are probably going to have to replace some of the actors. Only a certain number are allowed come over, right? |

The review (in the Updates section) made me excited to see the show--something rare, I guess because it's the first by someone closely associated with the creative team that does not undermine, turn its nose at, or imply there was anything wrong with the original production. It's impossible to maintain one's composure while reading the words of the creative team of something you've loved for the last 25 years, speaking of their time-tested, highly acclaimed original work as if it were yesterday's news, highly flawed, lacking, old, unexciting, monotonous, inefficient, boring. Most of all, the implication that it needed change is one thing I won't ever accept because it simply did not need it. The fact there is change is fine in itself but change was never the issue. Seemingly random, unnecessary change is what has gotten this life-long, faithful fan shaking his head.
I was listening to the 25th ann. tour last night and it amused me how they've gone from attempting to give most of the show a whole new sound to inching closer and closer back to what was originally heard at the Imperial and Palace. They were clearly unhappy with their God-awful, HIGHLY unusual tin-can sound work in the so-called revival, leading them to use Amsterdam as their guinea pig for another (COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY) rewrite which, unsurprisingly, hearkened back to John's original work. What we have now is a conglomeration of original and new work and having very closely heard this current version several times now, I cannot, for the life of me, see any significant artistic vision or intent in the new parts. And it is absolutely astounding to me how nearly every single new part added to the orchestration pales next to what was originally there. For example, I don't care what the intent, the string melody in "What Have I Done" was objectively better, more emotive, and better communicated Valjean's sentiment in a bittersweet way. It effectively tamed the character, setting in motion a stirring, heartfelt musical interpretation of the character's resolve for a new life and for redemption. "On My Own" has lost a lot of what made me love its orchestration in the first place. It now conforms a lot more to the usual "woe-is-me" interpretation, which makes the number uninteresting. The original orchestration alone, with its subtext--discordant reverie at the beginning to rude jolt of reality, desperate resistance to unsettling submission--offered a much more complex set of emotions and textures that an actress could work with. It isn't terrible as it is now (much, MUCH better than the 2006 Broadway travesty) but still significantly inferior and far less emotionally exciting/fulfilling. Totally random snares, oddly replaced bits (like the moving french horn replaced by a woodwind at the start of DYHTPS--WHY??) and a huge dose of unnecessary bombast (glittery sounds, over-the-top booms, and swishy sounds) are distracting at best. One wonders why they didn't insert some of that bombast at key moments that could enhance instead of obscure and distract? For example, the new crazy drums heard right before the poor start singing in "At the End of the Day" is awesome. One of very few bits of the new orchestration that I like. But why is it effective? Because that moment always sounded a bit barren. Sure, it originally did have drums but that still felt insufficient given the urgency and anger of the moment. The new orch solved that problem. A more careful, strategic approach could've helped. Sadly it seems they were more preoccupied with straying from the original than anything. Foolish! It was to the show's detriment unfortunately. An honest look at the show's original orchestral landscape, adding and replacing bits here and there, all of which would only enhance what was already written to near perfection could've yielded some incredible results. |

Yeah, Los Angeles isn't listed and I know it's going to be part of the Ahmanson's 2011-2012 season.
Also, I could swear I read it has been booked in Chicago already, but don't quote me on that. |

I got the Ahmanson subscription package this past week and Les Mis is heavily feature in it's brochures. Most of the pictures taken are of the current London tour cast too. Maybe they're trying to tell us something? | ||||
