Student Edition?I have never seen Les Mis yet, but next week I'm going to see a student edition (middle school-a few college age students) with my school's chorus. Will there be a drastic difference between that and the real one?
My teacher said the only drastic difference is that they MIGHT take out some of the parts they say the opposite of heaven in.

The student edition I saw did not involve any censorship in lyrics but did involve cuts to some of the songs, namely Confrontation, Stars, and A Little Fall of Rain (all still there, just shorter).
And of course, the other main difference is that it will be performed by amateurs instead of professionals, and the the majority of the cast will be far too young for their roles  .

I've seen and been in some fairly professional student productions. Don't let it discourage you. I saw it for the first time as a student edition and didn't miss anything until I found out it was gone later. If this is your first time, you'll enjoy it!

Unless it has the line "Don't they know they're buying gloves from one already dead?" in it. Then you'll definitely know you're missing something.

Aren't most of the changes more about length and being easier to perform than about being offensive?

This will never cease to be funny. Never.
But yeah, most of the changes that have been made to the vocally most straining or difficult passages. I'd think "BHH", Fantine's low notes in The Epilogue, and I know "Lamarque is dead" has been cut...

I went to see it today and it was amazing! They still swore (including Gavroche who (in reality) was 13) and it was just...WOW! The one thing my friend and I were mad about was that the only song they cut short was Little People and we were going crazy about hearing that song! Gavroche sang 1 verse of it  We wanted to hear the "a worm can roll a stone...etc.. My friend BALLED when Gavroche died and called him stupid for trying to climb over the barricade. I would really like to see the actual one someday.

Um... Little People is cut "short" in the regular production as well. So no reason to be mad. (and honestly, it has to be. At that point, we really don't need a kid singing random stuff that doesn't get the story anywhere.) Nice to hear you enjoyed it, though! : )

It's not to do with caring about Gavroche - it's about condensing an epic novel of thousands of pages into a stage production of manageable length, and you must admit that Little People is really not very integral to the plot or to any character development. If they're cutting much more important scenes in the actual production (which they do, the robbery at the rue plumet and much of the barricade stuff for instance), then they've got to get rid of Little People. The spirit of it is still there in the little snatches you get of it, anyway.

Hate to break it to you, but the full version of Little People was only in the show for approximately three months before they cut it. In 1986. It hasn't been used since.

One thing (that seemed important to me) that they skipped was why Gavroche climbed the barricade. All they did in the student edition was that Gavroche randomly jumped over it, so after the play my chorus teacher told us what was actually supposed to happen, so it makes sense now
