Lea Salonga Interview --> Eponine vs. FantineBroadwayWorld has an interview with Lea Salonga where she discusses her preparation for playing Fantine in Les Mis�rables. I think she was a better Fantine. She sang the part really well, and She also acted while she sang, unlike some of Fantines, who just kinda sing it out as a pop ballad rather than act it. She really showed her devotion to Cosette (she said being a mother this time in Les Mis helped with that) She was a bit more of a canon Fantine than others. She's my favorite Fantine 
I admit I really don't like her as Eponine. She's a bit of an Eppie-Sue as far as acting (like she doesn't make her even a bit crazy or obsessive) she over pronoucates a lot of the words, which is un-eponine like (she's relatively uneducated, and in my mind, her pronoucnation should be a little off) Her singing is beautiful and I so envy that voice, it just doesn't suit Eponine in my opinion. I prefer Frances Rufelle and Linzi Hatley. Just my opinion. |

The 'over-pronunciation' claims confuzzle me. She does a hard "T" during the intro to "On My Own" exactly 3 times ("without a home, without a friend, without a face to say hello to"). That's it. Yet, she has somehow developed a reputation as the Eponine who over-pronounces everything. Strange. :S
I don't think a completely mad Eponine would work. The musical adaptation of the character was clearly meant NOT to be insane. It would conflict with the text and would probably just confuse everyone. I don't enjoy the self-pitying, "crinkle on forehead=acting," "girl-next-door" brand of Eponine either, but a complete loon would be worse still. And to be fair, I don't think Lea's Eponine could be said to have been your typical annoying version of the character (the horrid Frances imitators). There was a time when I didn't like her take at all but it had more to do with feeling she wasn't really invested into the character and was up there doing a Lea concert instead. Nowadays I feel she does a serviceable job overall and it goes without saying that her vocal performance is great, although I still think the obvious anger she put into key moments of "On My Own" were misguided. I saw her as Fantine and I went in prepared NOT to immediately like her just because "awww, she has a daughter now so she must be able to relate, therefore she's amazing." 
But she delivered. And then some. She wasn't just acting, she was feeling. She was the best thing about the revival, in my opinion. |

Just saw the interview now since it kept getting stuck on that dumb credit card commercial and wouldn't load for me last night.
It's no coincidence that every actor who reads the portions of the novel that are pertinent to their character ends up winning raves for their performances in the show. They should make it required reading for anyone cast! I love watching her speak. She's so...I don't know. I just like it, hehe. And she looks amazing. Watching her sing "Another Hundred People" makes me wish they'd offer her a wider variety of roles on Broadway. Such a shame that talent such as hers has starred in only two musicals on Broadway. They should definitely cast her as Elphaba...NOW. LOL. I think she'd be wonderful in that. I totally went "awwwwwwwww" when she said the thing about her husband. |

I've always found her Eponine to be too bitter. I prefer a sound like Frances or something like that.
Eponine is in love. I feel that the character should be more of an airhead/lovey-dovey type thing with a HINT of bitterness towards Marius. I haven't seen her as Fantine, so I can't comment. Our Eponine is taking the bitterness and lovey-dovey stuff and making a nice mix of it. I'd say about 50/50. Andy. |

Lea has a beautiful pure voice which I think works great for Fantine, but not Eponine. I much perfer Eponine's voice to have some imperfections like Frances Ruffelle... or have a strong vibrato belt like Sutton... I felt Lea mixed her head voice and belt too much in OMO... I think when that song gets going and when the realization begins to occur, it is a harsher, in your face sound. When Daphne Rubin Vega played Fantine, I felt the exact opposite... I just remember thinking "It's too bad she isn't younger... I would love to see what she could do with Eponine"... Her rough vocals just didn't cut it for Fantine...
Sooooo... I prefer Lea as Fantine
