Motazeri is dead

I must admit it kind of freaks me out to hear the news from Iran these days which seem so close to what I'm watching with great enjoyment in Les Miserables. The new insurrections started with the funeral of Ayatollah Motazeri who acted like a kind of advocat of the people's voice against Chamenei and Ahmadinejad.
It's no fun for the students and workers there, not a musical either, and it makes me think if there shouldn't be more to my dedication to Les Mis than just enjoyment. At least some thoughts of solidarity.
Monsieur D'Arque

While I haven't been following the issue too closely, I do want to warn you not to get Les Mis confused with reality.

Enjoying the revolutionary spirit in a work of historical fiction based aroudn ONE PARTICULAR HISTORICAL EVENT is a lot different than supporting every revolution and insurrection, just on principle.

Well, I've had my revolutionary phase and stood on a few barricades, al right, at the appropriate age. Still, Hugo did not write about something for "rich young men to play" with but about something that deeply troubled him in his time and the troubles aren't over. Because we in western europe can indulge in the luxury of analyzing things with a drink in hand does not mean everybody in the world can do this and neither does it mean our distinguished analysis are better or "more right" because we aren't compelled to take decisions ourselves.
