Favourite Les Mis Ad-libs!

We've all heard them! The cast decide to say random things much to our amusement so, what are some of your favourites?

Few of mine:
Martin!Grantaire: "It's better than an operaaa!"
Jonathan!Lesgles: "Do you even know what the opera is?"
Martin!Grantaire: "...yes!"
Jonathan!Lesgles: "Your parents must be so proud."

Runaway Cart one:
"Run for your liiiiiives!"

Wendy Somerville (u/s Mdme T) after The Bargain:
"You could have got twice as much!"

And JOJ being adorable in the Well Scene:
"Come my child, I'm taking you home." Awww!

Others?
Eppie-Sue

Awesome thread.

Jonathan Williams in MotH, after half-dancing, half-making out with ... Rachel Bingham, I think:
"Oh love, oh, you'll get me in trouble at home, yes, you will..."

and he was talking about having a bruise somewhere the other day.

Runaway Cart scene, Jeff Nicholson: "Sir, you cannot lift this! It is FAR TOO HEAVY, Sir! Far too heavy!"

Caf scene, Greg Castiglioni laughing.
Jonathan Williams or Simon Shorten, I forgot: "Stop laughing, it's not funny...!"
Greg: "Very Happy But it's hilarious!"

Caf scene as well...
Davidjolras: "with the men and the arms that we never can match..."
Jeff in his corner: "Oh, it's IMPOSSIBLE!"

and I'm sure I've heard:
Martintaire: "and I'll breathe them all to death."
Davidjolras to Markfeyrac: "Will you please shut. him. up.?"

of course:
Joe Evans after the "opera" solo: "BRAVO MONSIEUR. BRAVO. ENCORE. ENCORE!"

Fantine's Arrest, David!policeman kicking Fantine: "SCUM."

more to follow...
l'ivrogne transfigur

Killian in MOTH: I was just sick in my mouth and swallowed it.

There was a really good Martintaire one as well that I've completely forgotten d'oh!
Madeleine

In the noise and chaos after David's "They will come when we call!" in Lamarque is Dead:
Killian!Feuilly: "YOU'RE AN ANIMAL!!!!"

Cafe Scene:
Joe!Prouvaire: "BRAVO MONSIEUR!" *enthusiastic clapping*
Markfeyrac: "Yes, bravo monsieur(!)" *sarcastic clapping and evil stare at Grantaire*

One Day More:
Markjolras: *going for the slow-mo hug with Gavinferre* "Combeferre!"
(not particularly exciting I know, but I thought it was very sweet and I've never seen anybody really say anything, and you could barely hear it really, at that point...)

I wish I could hear all the MOTH ad libs properly. Gavin, for example, seems to be saying brilliant things but I can never manage to catch a whole sentence over the actual song!
Orestes Fasting

Gary Beach as Thnardier: Everybody's bosom friend...
Nehal Joshi: I love bosoms!

Dan Bogart as Bamatabois: When this prostitute attacked me--
Lea Salonga as Fantine: F***ING BASTARD!

(I know you've all heard it on the blooper reel, but she did it EVERY NIGHT until she got yelled at by the stage manager. It was awesome.)

Speaking of "yelled at by the stage manager," here is just a sampling of Michael Minarik quotes.

Michael Minarik as Grantaire: It's better than an operaaaa! (stands on table waving his wine-bottle phallus around, and knocks over Nehal Joshi's drink)
Nehal Joshi as Lesgle: You--you fishmonger!
Minarik: (cracks up) Fishmonger? What the hell is that supposed to be?

Minarik as a worker, when Factory Girl attacks Fantine: Go on, fight! Tear her hair and rip her eyes out!

Gary Beach as Thnardier: Homing pigeons homing in, they fly through my doors... (pinches Idara Victor's bum)
Idara: (gasps and smacks Minarik the Drunk)
Minarik: At least she touched me!

Minarik as a beggar in Look Down: (sneaks up behind a beggar woman cradling a baby) I am going to eat your baby's head.
Later in Look Down: (roots around in a trash can) DINNER DINNER DINNER--turkey! I found turkey! And your baby's eyeballs look like dessert...

And then the beggar woman tried to placate him with one of the flyers Enjolras was handing out... and he took a big bite out of it.
wtfchuck

One of my friends saw this..

Runaway Cart Scene.

Javert: "If you don't move that bloody cart, I'll clamp it."

No WAY! I think that may be the awesomest ad-lib of all! Smile
mm10

They are all so funny I had no idea they did that!!!! Does it happen often
l'ivrogne transfigur

Oh, it's always happening. It's just a question of whether you can hear it or not. And whether you're listening out for it.

That has to be one of the funniest I've ever heard Laughing

There was also:

Javert: This swarm of worms and maggots could have picked you to the bone...
Jeff!Brujon: Maggots?! Shocked
Simon!Babet: I know. *shakes head slowly*

Jeff!Adlibbing FTW. The guy cracks me up constantly. It's the only thing that makes me sad when he plays Javert - missing his humourous add-ins!

I just love all the Thaxton adlibbing too, especially:
"For god's sake" during The Fight
"Get in there!!!" to Markfeyrac at the beginning of ALFOR
and all the general teasing Marius ad-libbing in R&B ("Burst of light?!?! pfffft!!!)"
Quique

I can't believe that, out of the 27 times I've seen the show, I've witnessed ZERO ad-libbing. I refuse to believe that. But after diving into the bowels of my memory, I came up with...nada. Confused
The Very Angry Woman

Graham Rowat in Master of the House: "This spoon's too large! This spoon's too large!"

Aymee Garcia after the Bargain/Waltz: "Give me all that money, you son of a bitch!"

Orestes Fasting wrote:

Remember the day I ran into you at the stage door in New York? My parents had seen Les Miz 5 or 6 times before but never on Broadway, and mom LOVED Minarik. She said he was "so naughty."

Ha, yes!

He did eventually get told to knock it off with the "DINNER DINNER DINNER," but he was always doing something. And his voice just carries, so he was always the one you heard in the crowd scenes, yelling "Don't do it, Monsieur le Mayor, it's not worth it!" in Runaway Cart or keeping up a sarcastic running commentary ("Shut up, I'm trying to read my paper") when the students are reporting to Enjolras. You can hear him in the blooper reel going "Aw, SHIT" in the one where Thnardier never shows up for Master of the House.

It also meant that you could hear one half of the conversation where Minarik the drunk is harassing Chip and Marya the bourgeois couple in Master of the House. "So where are you from? America, where's that?"
MizzieFan

Haha, these gave me quite a laugh Very Happy Thanks for posting and keep them coming!

Ah. I remember that.

Gina Ferrall did something similar. If I remember correctly, she yelled the SOB part and then jumped on Dougherty's back, lol.

I don't think they count as ad-libs though. Maybe it was blocking since I recall seeing Aymee do that every time I saw her, which was at least 7 times. Not to mention, Gina Ferrall, before her, also did it all 4 times I saw her in the role.
Eppie-Sue

during ATEOTD

"She'll be nothing but trouble again and again..."
Joe Evans as factory worker shouting over the ensemble: "SAAACK HER!"

Wasn't just me who thought that was loud last night, then!! The people next to me must have thought I was really cruel for sniggering at that bit.

In MOTH last night there was a great moment between Killian!traveller (Jeff's track), Mark!drunk (Jonathan's track) and Joe!drunk.

Mark: I like your scarf.
Killian: Thank you.
Joe: *unravelling his own scarf* Wanna swap?
Killian: No.
Mark: *pulling the scarf from Killian's hat* It's very soft. Can I have it?
Killian. No, don't touch it!
Mark & Joe: Sad
flying_pigs

Hahahaha love it! Master of the House is great for ad-libs!
Madeleine

Oh that's brilliant. I could see the two of them pestering Killian about something, but I was too far away to hear what they were saying. Smile

I'd love to be able to hear what the 4 guys (Joe Evans, Mark Dugdale, Martin Neely and...Jonathan is it?!) around that stage left table talk about! Mark in particular never seems to stop talking (or singing) for the entire scene...Laughing
flying_pigs

Is Jeff normally on that table too?
Eppie-Sue

Nope... Jeff is right next to it when he first arrives as Second Traveller and then moves next to Simon as First Traveller... you've got Antony and Helen on the table in the back (left), Thomas on the very left with Sophie and Chloe, then Gavin and Laura as the posh couple, Simon and Jeff as travellers in the middle, behind them Dylan as the old guy with the ear trumpet and Daniella as the old woman, Natalie, AJ and Rachel on the chairs next to them and Mark, Jonathan, Joe and Martin at the table on the right.

ETA:
*cough* sorry that was off topic. And, um, I totally shouldn't know this just that well.
flying_pigs

Ah of course! I'm thinking of where he sat in the 2005-06 cast!

You know you're obsessed with Les Mis when... Wink
Eppie-Sue

After Little People and after "There's a boy climbing the barricade!"/"He's safe!"... as Javert is led "into the tavern"...

Mark (as Courfeyrac): "You're making a mistake, he's..."
David (as Enjolras): "IN THERE. NOW."
xD
Loudly.

Joe Evans as Prouvaire at any given opportunity: "FREEDOOOOOM!"

Just have to say for the umpteenth time - I love how into the characters they get. That sounds just awesome!

YES! I was disappointed at first during the matinee because he didn't do his "Bravo Grantaire! Applause" in the Cafe, but he made up for it with two random shouts of "FREEEDOOOOOOOOM!"

You gotta love the ensemble Very Happy

Yes. This.

I think that's what Madeleine wanted to post, too. Jeff is epic.
Eponines_Hat

What's even better than reading about adlibbing? Hearing it!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4glIvD8HsY( Killian telling David he's "an Animal" after the LiD)

Jeff's "what man?" during the runaway cart in last night's show
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIFRio3wN0Y

He also gets a big "WIN" for "Yes sit down before you offend everybody!" to Grantaire before R&B.
Eppie-Sue

Haha, I love it. Had heard the "Animal" bit from so many different people who had been to that show, am very glad to hear it for myself. I always wonder what exactly they're yelling there... Didn't Dylan end up screaming "I've got something in my eye!" once? Elbow told me. Is that on here yet?
Eponines_Hat

Oh! I don't think so - I haven't heard that one either! Any idea which show it was in? The best bit about "You're an Animal" was how loud it was! I was in D/C and I still heard it! Anyway - about time someone appreciated the LiD. They must end up having such a laugh about these ad libs after the show - if they notice them, that is!
riverdawn

I often find myself wondering whether they actually have any conscious memory of a lot of the stuff they say during the show, or if they just get so much in character that this stuff comes out naturally. Smile

I know some cast members have said in the past that they don't remember half of what they say when they're ad-libbing.... but I'm still always curious.
MlleImparfait

I have one...recording where there's a couple quite funny ones during Runaway Cart.

"Is there anyone here who will rescue the man?"
"No."

"It'll kill you as well!"
*lots of noise, then silence*
"Danger!"
Eppie-Sue

Ah, there's some gold from a 2005 recording I've got, and I'm pretty sure it's David as Courfeyrac... at Javert's Arrival...
"He's back!"
"WHO?"
"... the volunteer."

Also, from Monday...
David: "For the army we fight is a dangerous foe..."
Antony: "SO ARE WE."

xD aw.
Madeleine

Eppie-Sue wrote:

Simon Shorten said that a few weeks ago, too. Smile

This happened a while ago and I haven't seen him do it since...but once, after "Everyone about your business, clear this garbage off the street", Jeff!Brujon was being all slow and took longer than everybody else to leave. Everybody else was halfway off stage but Jeff just stood there looking all confused and said "...can we go?" Laughing
Eppie-Sue

during Lamarque Is Dead.... somewhere around "will our barricade rise"...
Killian, in "battle cry" mode: "ENJOLRAAAAAAAAAS!"
and after the "caaaaall"...
Antony: "WE'LL NEVER GIVE UP!"

Also, Killian was very adorably helpless as the traveller in MotH that is normally Gavin's very posh traveller, and, confused and scared off by it all, wanted to leave the inn, muttering something along the lines of:
"Come, come, darling, we're leaving... excuse me, excuse me... we're going home, darling, follow me, let's go home..."
PureDiamondLight

I love this thread!! It's hilarious... but sadly I have no quotes of my own to add...

I do love the part in the Bargain where Thenardier gets Cosette's name wrong and has to be corrected... but that has happened both times I've seen the show, so I don't think it was ad-libing.

I'll have to listen more carefully next time I see the show!

That's always there. I've heard some funny ad libs after the Bargain. Tracie Bennett used to shout "fifteen hundred, you could have got twice as much!" I've also heard a Thenardier (Chris Vincent possibly) yell "fifteen hundred, he would have given me twice as much!" Jackie Marks simply shouted "money!" which was my favourite of the lot. I've heard loads of ad libs at various points in the show, but they don't seem as funny written down (or typed!).
PureDiamondLight

I was listening to an -uh - unofficial recording of the london cast this morning and thought I heard something strange in Red and Black. Listening back, the actual line on the recording is:

Enjolras: Do we fight for the right to a night at the opera now?

Unknown student: Most of us, yeah.

Haha Very Happy
lovesinging

I'm excited. I've just been cast in the (sadly) studen edition of Les Mis and can't wait to see if I'm allowed to try some of these and my own out.
Eppie-Sue

Thomas/Bahorel in the Final Battle, when Marius gets shot.
"Grantaire, DO SOMETHING, for God's sake!"

(he also tells him to "LEAVE HIM...!" [Marius] when he spots Enjolras waving the flag.)
beyondthebarricade

Yesterday, Antony after Grantaire's "I am agog, I am aghast" solo: "Sit down, Grantaire, sit down!"

And I'm pretty sure I heard a "Get off me!" from Nancy after the part with Montparnasse grabbing her waist in Look Down.
