on my own debateI'm planning to audition for les miz at my school and I really think that I would make a good Eponine. I know every girl my age says that and she and Fantine are the most sought after roles for girls my age... but I really think I could do it. I was just wondering what I should do and sing to show them that I can do this. I don't really want to sing On My Own because I know that EVERYONE will be singing that. Any suggestions? |

This might be a thread worth posting in the Auditions section, rather than here. It might get more attention over there.
See if this article helps, in any case. http://en.allexperts.com/q/Acting-Plays-Singing-695/Audition-song-Les-Miserables.htm |

Everybody has their own favorite charries...nobody honestly has the right to say 'oh, this character is better than the other' ... |

I don't think singing "On My Own" shows the director you like the part, want the part, and are good for the part. It shows the director 1) You don't know enough about the part of Eponine and 2) You don't care enough to find another song like OMO that isn't OMO.
A good OMO does not make a good Eponine. The part of Eponine is much much more than On My Own. Sure, it's her only solo, but it's not her most important song. A good Eponine will have a good OMO, but she will also have a good interaction with Marius, a good portrayal of the character, and if we have to go by songs, a good A Little Fall of Rain. In fact, I always tend to think of the scene of On My Own as a buffer scene between two high-intensity scenes at the barricade. Just because you can sing On My Own good doesn't mean you can make a good Eponine. A lot of girls can sing OMO very well. Not very many girls can make a good Eponine. So, in short.... DO NOT SING ON MY OWN! Please, check out the audition forum to figure out another possible audition song. |

Bingo. I barely pay attention to OMO when I see the show anymore; this is partially because I've heard that damn song so many times that it'd take something really radical to make me really listen to it, and your casting director probably feels the same way. But it's also, and probably in greater part, because the meatiest parts of Eponine's characterization are in her interaction with Marius. If I want to get a good feel for an actress' interpretation of Eponine, I'll probably look at her in Eponine's Errand and Look Down before I even start to think about OMO. |

Ah, but have you ever heard the techno version?? Hahaha... http://www.sendspace.com/file/4uv23s I remember somebody mentioning this version way back when it first came out. Don't know how many people have it already, but there's the link to its sendspace! Courtesy of a poster from the Eponine Live Journal community. Enjoy. It's an... interesting rendition. |

What do you guys think of I Dreamed A Dream as an audition song? I'm not planning on ever using it, but I'm just curious. I always thought, even though Fantine and IDAD and Eponine and OMO are usually associated together, that IDAD was much better in the course of the show than OMO. It doesn't give as much to Fantine's character as her arrest does, but I think it is way more effective, both emotionally and in telling the story, than OMO. Your opinions? | ||||

There is another way to look at this:
Consider that whats key is not only the song itself. I think it has to be a song you personally sing brilliantly. Ask yourself is there is any point picking the perfect song if it doesn't suit your voice? Make a short list. Pick a number of songs that really show you off well, make that your criteria, then within that, pick the one that shows the emotions you want to show for the character you are going for and the range of your ability to put a song over. Thinking of it this way mnay just nake you pick a different song. Good luck! |
