one thing I've never understood

does Gavroche have any family or is he and orphan?
I know this is probably a really stupid question.

He was born on the Google campus in Mountain View, silly.
Fantine

The Thenardiers are his family. He is Eponine's little brother.

In the novel he also has another sister (Azelma) and two little brothers. Madame Thenardier disposed of her baby boys though because she did care about her daughters but there wasn't enough to bring the boys up as well.
(Something like that).
Orestes Fasting

Even in the book, though, it's treated as yet another coincidence. Gavroche, who's meant to represent the classic street-rat gamin, has no home and no contact with his family of origin; sometimes he goes to see his "ancestors" and Mme Thenardier just asks him what the hell he showed up for and turns him out. He doesn't appear to care. His only real family is in gangs of street urchins.

If I recall correctly he lives in an elephant statue in the park with his two younger brothers, and cares for them by scrounging food.

Eh, sorta. He doesn't know they're his brothers and they don't stay with him terribly long. But the overall picture is spot-on.

Thanks for the correction. I read the book 20+ years ago. My detail memory isn't quite that good.
