Original ORIGINAL lyrics

After listening to the Quique's live recording of the London cast, I noticed that there are a few different lyrics that aren't on any recording. If anyone knows what they are, I would appreciate it if you could list them. In particular are the original Well Scene and Javert's Arrival.

I think the Well Scene goes something along the lines of:

Cosette:
There is a castle on a cloud
I like to go there in my sleep
Aren't any floors my me to sweep

*Sees Valjean and drops bucket*

Valjean:
Don't be afraid of me, my dear
Tell me your name and have no fear
How cold it grows when the sun has set

Cosette:
I'm not afraid and here I'm named Cosette

Valjean:
Long will you be afraid again (Not to sure of these lines because that doesn't make sense!)
I've come to take you from this place
There is a better world you'll see

Cosette:
Please take my hand and walk with me

Valjean and Cosette:
La La La...

Could it be:
"No longer will you be afraid again"

I can't for the life of me make out little Cosette's bit at the beginning of Castle on a Cloud that corresponds to "ils vont venir bientt et je n'ai pas fini" on the OFC. Anyone?

What about the James Fenton lyrics? Anyone have those?

Ils vont venir bientt, et je n'ai pas fini
de laver, de brosser, de cirer le parquet
et puis sans un rpit j'irai servir aussi
pourtant, elle me battra quand mme
je sais mais je pris l'habitude
et a me fait moins mal que ma solitude

Which translates to:

They will come soon, and I am not done
Mopping, scrubbing, and polishing the floor
And then, without a rest, I will go serve as well
Yet she will beat me all the same.
I know, but I am used to it
And it is no worse than my loneliness

No, I know that. But there's a bit at the beginning of Castle on a Cloud in Quique's OLC bootleg that corresponds to that part, but I can't make out the English lyrics.

Is there a reason why the well scene isn't in the Complete Symphonic Recording? I thought it had all the songs...

I believe it was cut from the show at that point. The CSR is basically a picture of how the show was when that recording was released.

It does.

It has all the songs AS THE SHOW WAS PERFORMED in 1988.
Quique

I hate the cuts with a grand passion. I feel they take so much away from the show. It feels rushed and they take away character development. They may seem disposable to some but, to me, those bits and pieces are essential to the emotional build-up of the scenes they were cut from.

IMO the current well scene corresponds better with what was written in the book. In the book, Valjean does not tell Cosette why he is there or anything about what he is doing.
It is also really interesting to see the differences that the cuts made to the characters. For example, I never liked David Burt's Enjolras, I consider it to be far to gentle. But the cut conversation that he originally had with Gavroche about sending him to bed did give the character a much gentler side.

I'm not completely certain, but I think I have managed to work out most of the introduction to Castle on a Cloud.

Madame will come any minute
And I'm nowhere near finished sweeping and scrubbing and polishing the floors
Each day, every day... (I have no clue what this next bit is... it sounds like 'for sleep')
(Again, no clue. Perhaps 'there are shadows in the other bay' Confused )
Can't you see the snow is out there? (I'm uncertain, but it seems to make sense and it is meant to be winter.)
I know a place where no-one tends to work you hard
Where she will never be

That is my best guess. But as i have said far oo many times already, it is only a guess.

^ It's very facinating isn't it? Some of the lyrics on the OLC live recording. I hate it that it's muffled enough not to be able to understand yet still clear enough to somewhat enjoy. It's a crazy, crazy recording, lol.

I've torn my hair out trying to make-out some of those early lyrics. I'll listen to it again for the billionth time and see if I can offer any additional input, hehe.

In that book by Edward Behr (http://www.dresscircle.co.uk/product.asp?StockID=28089) there is a section about James Fenton. It contains some of original lyrics, the ones I can remember reading are some of Gavorche's lyrics, which are considerably better than those awful lyrics in 'Little People'. I wonder how the show would be if they had kept James Fenton. Some of the current lyrics in the show seem odd.

Is that who talks to Gavroche at the beginning of little People? I was very curious about that. The lyrics in that bit go something like this:
Only Little boys may sleep
little people need there rest
little cups are quickly drained
(not sure about this next bit) little breaks are quickly pressed

come on little mite
it's time to say good night

That's only my guess Also can you see why I thought it might be Grantaire? Because of the little cups bit. Thanks Quique! Also, there's some added lyrics in "The Final Confrontation" and "Eponine's Errand" Any ideas would be helpfull. Thanks again Quique for giving us something to puzzle over!
eponine5

Actually I only assumed it was Enjolras because he had been speaking before (dumb reason), and also because he did talk to Gavroche in the book.
Now that I think of it, it might be Grantaire.

eponinelover wrote:

Since he was talking about cups the line before, it could be 'little grapes are quickly pressed'
Quique

I think the insertion of "Little People" at that point is craptastic!!! Mad

Thank God they removed it, lol.
Quique

Also, what does everyone think of "The Sewers" and "Valjean's Confession"?

I love them both but see how the musical sequence of "The Sewers" could be cut and replaced. I really like the old "Valjean's Confession" though.

I like the later version better, the actual confession is far too brief for my tastes in the original version. I like it much better the way it turned out and the way we have it today, although I do like Marius' reaction in the original version.

Is the live recording of the Original London Cast still being sold? I looked but couldn't find it.
