Revival OrchestrationsWill they be redone/better than the OLCR? 'Tis Lez Mis's big miss. |

Orestes Fasting |
No idea about the orchestrations, but I have found out a bit about the status of the cuts:
- They're working off the London script, which has a few lines different. - All the cuts are still in place, except... - A verse of Turning has been added back in - The full inn scene before Master of the House has been restored - Gavroche gets a new song for his death scene |

I could care less about that crap. I just wanna make sure the orchestrations don't suck.

If you comment in Ali Ewoldt's blog and ask her, she might mention it. http://lesmiz.lohudblogs.com/ |

Shame the cuts are still in place. But ...
- Gavroche gets a new song for his death scene Here's hoping it's based on the OFC. Or directly on the book. |

Very interesting! Please let us know if you find out more! I'd rather have the old cut stuff put back in than Gavroche getting a new song.
You may be in the wrong place. |

The French Concept Album's version of Garvoche's Death was a lot better.
Etoile |
I never really liked "Little People" but I like the original French song "C'est la Faute a..." becuase it was taken straight from the book. I wonder if the new song will be an English translation of that one? |

OF's info came straight from Ali Ewoldt's blog, so you may as well go to the source. (I already linked it.) |
||||||||

I vist it but I guess she's updated it since the last time I've been there. |

I'm glad they're putting the full MOTH scene back in, I liked that in the CSR.
I hope they don't change the orchestrations...they're fine as they are, really. I can't imagine why they'd want to change anything. |

Are you sure this isn't the inn scene that was cut from the prologue? |

Gary Beach, who is playing Thenardier, says in this article that I am going to link, that "Master of the House" is "going to sound like a little pub band." Take that as you like.

Holy god, yes, they're toning down the synthesizer. Rejoice!

I'm so glad they're bringing Turning back. Contrary to many people here, I really like that song. The things I wish they'd put back most though are those parts at the barricade or in Attack on Rue Plumet.
Gavroche gets a new death song..... I'm not sure about that, but then again, I'm against any changes to Les Mis that isn't reverting it back to how it was before. |
||||||||
Mademoiselle Lanoire |
Which "before", though? Pre-cuts? OBC? OLC? OFC?
The Very Angry Woman |
By "new," it might just mean new to Ali Ewoldt, who joined the cast well after the overtime cuts -- or "new" in that it goes back to the OFC. Or something else. |
||||||||
Orestes Fasting |
Gavroche's death wasn't affected by the cuts, though, was it?
Mademoiselle Lanoire |
I'm pretty sure it wasn't...
The Very Angry Woman |
No, it wasn't. |

The original orchestrations hold a special place for me. I practically know them by heart. That's how much I love them. I'm hoping that there won't be any drastic changes.
Lazarus (Adam G) |
Perhaps I can attempt to make a 'not legal' recording for us Pirates?
But that's only if I can get the money together to go. I already spent a lot of money on the Farewell Tour of JCS with Ted Neeley. |

YAY! *does a happy dance* We need less synthesizer in things these days. Bring in the real musicians, it makes a difference! *stands on soapbox and nods sagely* Ooh, I like Turning too. Are they keeping in the cuts in Fantine's death? I never liked those cuts. |

Ali Ewoldt addresses the eighties-ness of the current orchestrations:

Ali Ewoldt says that besides the changes she mentioned, they're using the current London libretto, so I think that means the cuts are intact. Also, look at the second rehearsal video--they show Daphne doing part of Fantine's death and you can see they're using the cuts. |

"It was so exciting for all of us to meet the orchestra, listen to the new orchestrations and really feel like our show is coming together. And our orchestra is absolutely fantastic! We have one percussionist, 2 keyboards, trumpet, 2 horns, trombone/tuba, 3 woodwinds and a string quartet."
I...I...really...don't know what to say to this. I am hoping that this is only temporary and that they will have more of the orchestra for the show when it opens. |

It could be worse but I am completely not looking forward to the new orchestrations. I happened to like that '80's' sound. They tried to get rid of it before back at the show's 10th Broadway and London anniversaries but that 'sound' returned shortly after. Really, they should leave the orchestrations alone. I don't see the point in changing them. This is sad to me. The original John Cameron orchestrations hold a special place. I practically know them by heart! The size of the orchestra has been severly downsized as well, from the original run. This is what the Les Misrables Broadway orchestra looked like for the duration of its 16 year run (obviously, some of the names of the players changed during the course of the run but not many. Most of the names here, remained for the duration of the run! Some are even listed in the original Broadway cast recording's orchestra. Wow, they sure made a career out of it, didn't they?! Hehe.)...
Associate Conductor (Keyboards): BETH FREMGEN Assistant Conductor (Keyboards): SARIVA GOETZ Concert Master: MARILYN REYNOLDS Violins: MARION PINHEIRO, SEAN CARNEY, KATHERINE LIVOLSI-STERN, RICHARD HENRICKSON, ERIC DEGIOIA Violas: SAM KEPHART, KATHLEEN FOSTER Celli: CLAY RUEDE, BATIA LIEBERMAN Flute & Piccolo: JACQUELINE GIAT Clarinet & Alto Saxophone: MITCHELL WEISS Oboe & English Horn: HARRIET ORENSTEIN Trumpet, Piccolo Trumpet, Flugelhorn: DAVID GALE, ROBERT ZOTTOLA Trumpet & Piccolo Trumpet: PETE HYDE Bass Trombone: JOHN ROJACK French Horns: PATRICIA HACKBARTH, KATHERINE CANFIELD Guitar: BRIAN KOONIN Bass: BRIAN HAMM Drums: WILLIAM LANHAM Percussion: MARK BELAIR Now, according to Ali's blog, the revival will have...
2 Keyboards 1 Trumpet 2 French Horns 1 Trombone 1 Tuba 3 Woodwinds (Probably a flute, oboe, and clarinet) A String Quartet (Most likely 2 violins, a viola, and a cello) I just knew Cameron Mackintosh would do this! He did it in London and now here (well, at least, he's not stuffing the pit with Sinfonia's here, as he did in London, but still). Where's the guitar, bass, and drums? What, don't tell me they will be synthesized!! Ick, ick, yuck, sh*t! This show needs a grand orchestra!! Not some little band! That's a massive orchestral downsize there! That sound I know and love so well will definitely be affected or gone forever! Needless to say, I'm NOT a happy camper...*Slit wrists* *die* |

Why not comment and ask her? |

I couldn't agree with you any more! I hate how they downsize the orchestras. It just makes the show loose the grand feel it should have. (the CSR and TAC do a good job in this department.) But I understand about the 80's feel. I like how they plan to bring this into the show, because listening to all the pre-90's recordings, I get that vibe, and it really works well for the show. I can atleast see this working. ...I should hold my breath so I don't get disappointed when the overture sounds like the backing track to some rap song. |
||||||||
Pshhness |
I just listened to a few songs from the revival, not enough yet to write a whole review.. but I will try to get a one out... =].
One thing that really jumped out is that the new orchestrations have more percussion elements than before. Just after One Day More, at the beginning of At the Barricade, there's an added part of snare and (I belive) picc solo. There are more.. I just didn't notice yet.. x__x... |
||||||||

Where are the revival rehearsal videos?
Orestes Fasting |
Yeah, it sounds like too much percussion. (Of course, the recording I have sounds like it was made from directly behind the drummer. It probably sounds perfectly normal from most seats.)
Other than that, though, I'm liking what I've heard of the reorchestrations. It doesn't sound stripped-down or tinny at all. |
