Something wierd I found

I was looking around this site...

http://www.mtholyoke.edu/courses/rschwart/hist255/bohem/tmizmusical.html

...when I saw a sentence that started "Despite the fact that Marius's love for Cosette is really the main plot for the musical..."

I don't get that. I know that neither the novel nor the musical is as Valjean-centric as some of the movie versions, but I'm still pretty sure that the "main plot" is Valjean's life journey.

What do all of you think? Is Marius's love for Cosette the real "main plot" for the musical or the novel, or not?

Oh, dear bog, no. In no way, shape, or form is the Marius/Cosette romance the main plot. But then again, just take a look at the rest of that introductory page. It's littered with misspellings, not to mention this (italics are mine):
Quote:
Marius's bourgeois upbringing, or about his grand-father, the Napoloeonic General
.
That site looks like it was a history project from students who hadn't read the Brick (at least, not properly) and were trying to use it as a tie-in.

Besides, everyone knows that the Enjolras/Grantaire subtext is the main plot. Wink

I find it ironic that we're pointing out the website's misspellings in this thread...

Laughing That is kind of wierd, isn't it?

I like the Mt Holyoke site. There's plenty of neat information over there about the time period. Who cares if they only read the sparknotes of the Book? We know the plot.
DontDoSadnessxx

weird.

Who's Craig Rumano?

I admit, I probably jumped on that site a little hard. I've looked at some of the information previously -- it was pretty decent, apart from the typos. Screwing up some facts about books I heart, though... I get a little defensive. And derisive. Oops!
lesmisloony

I'm kind of defensive of the Mt. Holyoke site, though, as it's where I found my Monty picture... the one I use in my signature and on my sites and... like... everywhere else. It's got some good information. So, I might have sounded a bit like an ass earlier when defending it.

No worries! I felt a little uneasy after my first reply, wondering if I'd been too harsh. All's well that ends well, though, right?

I met one of the people who worked on it. Completely by coincidence. We were at the same party and I, with my usual lack of social grace, had started rambling about Haussmann's reconstruction of Paris when she chimed in. I thought I'd found another geek, but then she said, "I took this class once at Mt Holyoke..."

That site, by the way, is kind of interesting for general knowledge, but not to be relied upon for facts or in-depth research. They were playing just as fast and loose with their history as with their Brick knowledge; the main points are correct enough, but the details tend to be screwy.

Yesterday I finally had the time to read all the wonderfull historic stuff you have in your site. And now I discover that you TOO happen to talk about the baron Haussmann at parties Very Happy Very Happy
I think that I absolutely fangirl you, Orestes!

No, seriously. You have the most interesting information and I am absolutely in love with your site. Specially with all the historical information. I was jumping up and down all the time: "oh, that's were Hugo got his inspiration for such and such" (which, since I don't even really like the brick makes me a completely crazy person...).
But I loved everything. From the maps, to the bishop's nephew letter, to the bits about Les Amis du Peuple (even the whole bit about the judicial system) and the bits of the book. I only skipped hugo's disgression on prostitution, I must confess.
