Songs in different keys

In the MTI version of Les Miserables (the full version, not the School Edition) they include "I Dreamed A Dream" in two keys: E major and Eb major (the original key). They also include "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" in two keys: Bb minor and A minor (the original key).

Both the "alternate" versions are half a step higher. Any idea why they might do that? I could see how E major would be easier for strings to play in, but Bb minor is certainly NOT easier! Vocally, it also puts the "high note" in each a half-step higher.

Any insights? I can't seem to figure it out. The preceding music and music that follows each song is unaltered in key, and these are the only two songs that are offered with alternate keys.

Orestes Fasting

Hm. I was going to say maybe in case the singer isn't terribly strong on the lower notes (I know there's a world of difference in my voice between a G and a G flat), but Fantine actually has a low E flat in the finale, so scrap that.

No idea.
