Sound Clips from My Production of LES MISERABLES

Hey y'all.
Just thought I'd share with you all some sound clips I found from my production of LES MISERABLES, which was performed all the way back in December last year (sniff). These recordings are of pretty good quality, and were taken about halfway through our painfully brief rehearsal period (most of us were wrestling with final exams and high school graduation duties at the same time as rehearsal - arrgh!) Anyway, hope you enjoy, tell me what you think!

AT THE END OF THE DAY (Part 1) - http://download.yousendit.com/8BE41448707A0C06
Our ensemble was made up of all high-school students from years 8-12, and they were made to work very hard, especially in this song where diction was drilled in to them, and they were urged to be more ferocious.

AT THE END OF THE DAY (Part 2) -
http://download.yousendit.com/A3BF4EFB70E2B7B5
Our Factory Girl was a remarkably vicious 15-yr old, and our Fantine was (almost) 17. This recording is from "At the end of the day she's the one who began it..." to the end.

COME TO ME (FANTINE'S DEATH) -
http://download.yousendit.com/3C6B4DBF2620C331
This is the entire song (we were working from a complete copy of the score, prior to implementing the Student Edition cuts. TRIVIA: this score, belonging to our co-director Paul Peacock, had actually been TOUCHED by Boublil and Schonberg themselves during Paul's run in the show 2000/2001! Ooh!)

CONFRONTATION -
http://download.yousendit.com/AD06DA3852AB3BF9
Once again, the complete song. Javert and Jean Valjean were both 17 at the time. This was always riveting to watch, the two guys really put a lot into it, and didn't move at all, just stared into one another's eyes. Twas quite intense.

RED AND BLACK (Part 1) -
http://download.yousendit.com/684B6E9E0B603214
Heehee, this clip is of myself, playing Enjolras (so be kind). I was 17, and boy did I love my vibrato Laughing . This is from "It is time for us all...." to "...the night that ends at last."

RED AND BLACK (Part 2) -
http://download.yousendit.com/4820F03639699229
From "Marius, you are no longer a child...." onwards.

LAMARQUE'S DEATH -
http://download.yousendit.com/5DA839C721A92854
The most challenging, yet most fun, portion of the score to sing. Of course, I didn't get to sing it once we implemented the Student Edition cuts, but I guess that was for the best since the top note was a real struggle for me at that point in my training, I'll be honest.

IN MY LIFE (Part 1) -
http://download.yousendit.com/BAC252332D54CD96
Ahh, my dear friend Sarah. Had her heart set on Eponine, but had the misfortune of being the only girl in the school who could hit a high-C. Still, she was a beautiful Cosette, and has a great voice for a then-16 year old girl.

IN MY LIFE (Part 2) -
http://download.yousendit.com/CD09AE8F3B970958
Or, as I like to call it, "Cosette Grows Balls", hehe. This is the part of the song where Cosette argues with Valjean... "In my life, I'm no longer a child..."

A HEART FULL OF LOVE -
http://download.yousendit.com/49666F923733DF76
Beautiful. If you have keen ears you can hear Sarah sing the incorrect words at the end without realising it (!) Perhaps a not-so-subtle manifestation of her true desire to play Eponine, haha. Marius was sixteen.

ONE DAY MORE (Part 1) -
http://download.yousendit.com/77A224144B40AE8B
First part of the song. Eponine standing a little close to the mic...she's a fifteen-yr old girl with a very loud voice.

ONE DAY MORE (Part 2) -
http://download.yousendit.com/F42F422D50130229
I don't really like this clip mainly because Mme Thenardier tries to steal the spotlight by belting as loud as she can, but not quite hitting the correct note. However, still worth it to hear Sarah's high-C at the end, I say!

BRING HIM HOME -
http://download.yousendit.com/485ADAC45BF899FA
This is our Valjean's rendition of BRING HIM HOME, one of the first times he sang it in front of the whole cast, followed by DRINK WITH ME (reprise).

ON MY OWN -
http://download.yousendit.com/0D93990F5106B639
This isn't actually our Eponine singing ON MY OWN, but Sarah (Cosette) singing it late one night. The quality's not great, and her voice isn't at its best, but I still wanted to let you guys hear it and give me your opinion cos no one else was ever able to, haha.

Not only did this particular production mark the achievement of a long-term dream of mine, to be in LES MIS (!), it also marked the end of my high school years. As such, there is a great deal of nostalgia tied up in these recordings, and as such I am incredibly excited to share them with you and learn what you think. Thank you very much!

With much love,

What a talented group of people! That was really impressive, I actually really enjoyed that! As an ensemble everyone sounded in harmony and the principle roles were sung very well and strong. A BIG well done from me -( and that took guts to say- cos people on this site have a thing against CAPITAL LETTERS!). Were the costumes provided? Bet you had soooo much fun doing that production!

Nice! I really dig your Cosette, and she was certainly a lot better as Cosette than she was singing OMO. Her Cosette was lovely, she was given the right role. And your real Eponine sounded great in ODM, I really liked her "there", and that's gotta be a hard bit to do properly.

Great cast, bet it was a fab show. Smile
Fantine

I only listened to AHFOL and ODM. I think Marius and Cosette were perfect for each other Smile Cosette has a really nice voice.

Eponine sounded a bit too "flat" if that is the right word for it... Too shouty. Valjean sounded a bit weak. But then again, this is just judging from the One Day More Smile

You were awsom as Enjolras! It must have been a wonderful experience. Thanks for sharing those! One more thing, was the pianist a student? I noticed they made a few mistakes.

Thank you very much Very Happy! The show was an incredible experience. We performed four shows over three days, and unfortunately I lost my voice for the second day of the run, which marred it somewhat. However I learnt a lot about what I was capable of when I went on and performed two shows despite the vocal problems I was experiencing. With extensive rest I was able to fully recover by closing night, and really gave it my all, ending the run on a good note, in both senses of the expression.

The pianist was not a high school student, but a 21yr old music student. He was actually a fantastic and dedicated musician, who played three orchestral parts on his keyboard and conducted simultaneously, as well as transposing several full scores to suit different instruments. The mistakes you hear were probably just due to it being a Thursday afternoon rehearsal Very Happy

As for the costumes, they were designed and crafted by our school wardrobe mistress. Cosette's in particular was incredibly beautiful, I really preferred it to the dress she wears in the pro show. I can't really describe it, hopefully I can find a picture and post it. Of course I got my token vest, which was incredibly handsome, and shirt with very puffy sleeves, haha.

Goodness this has really put me in the mood to watch my schools version....THANX!! *turns on DVD*

Ok, this is the best I can do in terms of pictures. They're only backstage ones, but give u a glimpse of performers and costumes. I may be able to find some more in the future, but til then.

Myself and Kiri, who played Eponine. This was taken on closing night, when my voice had recovered but my state of physical wellbeing had not. Hence, I look dishevelled, unshaven, and my hair has been pulled back into what I maintain is simply the worst ponytail ever. Still, I was having fun!

Kiri and Cassandra, who shared the role of Eponine. Its Kiri who appears on the clips that I've posted. Cass was a bit older, thus probably a more accomplished actress, but both were very strong performers. Kiri only performed one night performance as Eponine since she was appearing in the Western Australian premiere of RENT at the same time (she was Ensemble...they actually offered her five performances as Mimi cos the girl playing her was recovering from illness and couldn't do the whole run, but she turned it down saying she was too young. Mature choice for a 15yr old I say)

Ok, so I was caught unawares in this photograph, standing on a chair behind Kiri, and Brendan, our Javert. Looks imposing, doesn't he Laughing

Kiri and Julian, our Marius. As you can tell by now, these photos were all taken with Kiri's camera, which is why she features in...well, all of them.
