Stars - Tenor version!!!

Right guys, I am sat here recording a tenor version of Stars, I was just going to do it much the same as the original but just change a few things to boost the range. What I've ended up doing is something quite different, it may not work! I will keep you posted....
Tj@themusicals

OH dear oh dear, it really isn't going to plan! I think I should just stick to actual tenor songs. This just doesn't suit and I'm not doing it justice Sad
olly

No, please post it! I'm sure it's a brilliant rendition and I'd really like to hear it. I was enthralled when you posted this up.
Tj@themusicals

Seriously mate, it sounded bad, so I went back to doing the version that everyone knows and it just doesn't suit me.
Cloudy This Morning

Awww... I'm sure the Tenor version sounded just fine! I've already made a thorough ass of myself--therefore, nothing you do can look any worse. Very Happy

Come on!

Pleeeeeeeeease?
DaddyDiesel

There is enough tenor stuff in the show. Stars is meant to be thick and juicy sound. No offense I dont think there could ever be an arrangment of Stars done by a tenor.
Cloudy This Morning

Dave Willets did it, oddly enough. It wasn't bad. I loved the way he said, "as Lucifer fell." Granted, it was powerful like 'Stars' should be, but it was terribly cute.

But then again, from what I've seen, Willets can go no higher than a Top-C, which is great, but many baritones have no problem with that.

I still want to hear your version, TJ@themusicals, regardless of how bad you think it is. We know you're a good singer (just as we all know Cloudy's good, but she still makes crappy stuff for fun Laughing).

Good is such a strong word. Embarassed

And yes, TJ, crappy stuff is terribly fun. After all, what's the point of singing if you can't laugh at yourself? *looks at Squaredance!Eponine's Errand and that godawful 'Confrontation' where she was that horrible Javert*

Everyone wants to hear it. I seriously doubt anything you sing could be bad.
Tj@themusicals

I think Daddy is right, it just wasn't write, and I don;t just want to do the typical baritone version of it. I think I might try and different song in my comfortable voice Smile

Cloudy This Morning

Aww...

The world weeps a little.

Well, I'LL do Stars! Eventually.
Lazarus (Adam G)

And I'll record a man-diva version. Wink
Tj@themusicals

Right then, I scrapped the idea of Stars and have opted for "Music of the night" instead!
It is finished, not as good as I had hoped but I am trying to upload it now...bare with me

Tj@themusicals

Here it is then. The link is below!
Btw, I really detest the last held note of the song anyway, and now I've sung it, I hate it even more! Very Happy
Would love to know your thoughts....

Now I won't be able to give a very long review this time for I am an invalid at the moment having just been discharged from hospital. But I will say my immediate thoughts.

Nice tone at the beginning; nice tuning. One thing I personally dislike (but this is just me) is the cutting short of words: "sharpens", for example. It's not just you Tj, don't worry! Hans (plays Javert currently on West End) has brilliant voice: strong, rich, deep and juicy. However it is simply his style in the musical I don't like: he cuts his words short: "There" instead of "Theeerrreee". Simply a technicality that has to do with my preference! But as I say, beautiful tone, and you capture the feeling nicely! As the song progresses, though, you seem to lose this 'cutting-short', which is nice. I like your: "silently the senses" - very nice crescendo and diminuendo. It's strong, yet not obscenely loud; brilliant balance. Lovely note on "thoughts" and "close". I thought the top note on "soar" was extremely well hit. Nice and quiet, yet it was passionate. Your lower notes are lovely and rich, which gives you a noticeably great balance. Most likely your microphone, however your note on "Be...!" seemed a tad forced; given it's a bloody high note! I have so much admiration for high tenors for I am an extremely low bass and have trouble with higher notes! On your last three "music of the night"s:

1st: lovely note! Haven't heard this note before in the song... I love this rendition! Very well hit, very passionate and it gives a nice change to the song.

2nd: I can't believe how nicely you can hit these top notes! I think it's simply amazing. Not only can you hit them, but they're finely tuned with nice vibratto as well as the little 'bark' (as some call it on this board) as you come off the note: I love this 'bark' (Colm Wilkinson is famous for it).

3rd: Simply beautiful. I know you hate the note, but I know how hard it is to keep it when you have a difficult chromatic on the piano going up in parallel with your held-note. Very well done.

I know that there are the odd criticisms in this 'review' and some that you may well disagree with (and others), which I understand. A few of them are simply for my enjoyment (how I like the song sung). Please don't take this at all the wrong way. I can say quite candidly that I feel you are the best singer on this board, and can see you going on to much bigger and better things - just stick at it! Well done mate.

I'm listening to your Gethsemene right now!

Olly
Tj@themusicals

Yet again mate, I am speechless. The fact that you take the time to firstly listen and then to write this much is incredible to me. I agree with everything you say too, that note was a little forced sadly it's partially down to compression when I record, I don't know how to use it! lol. My microphone isn't the best either, so I literally have to be my own compressor as I sing. It's a nightmare. I may go into a studio sometime and do them properly, but until then, I will continue with these demo recordings Smile
Thank you again.
olly

Haha; that is no problem whatsoever: I should be thanking you for posting these up. I have most probably made myself clear in that please would you post new songs up on this site regularly? We (I know I can speak on behalf of the board) love your renditions. I've actually gone to the extent of using the recording thing on my computer to record your songs in order that I can put them on my iPod. How many songs do you have, that you've recorded, on your computer?
Tj@themusicals

Well these are the first show songs I have ever recorded, so as I record them I post them. There are 4 on my site now and I intend to record more whenever I have the time and when I find suitable backing tracks to them. Any requests?
olly

Have you thought about Empty Chairs At Empty Tables? I feel you would make a very good Marius. It's an exceptionally emotive song, and I feel you have a striking ability to portray emotions very well through songs.

Here is a good backing track to the song.
Tj@themusicals

I may try that, thank you. I'd like to try some other tracks from different musicals too, but I'm just not sure which!?
Trevor

Close Every Door from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat?
Tj@themusicals

You bet! I have that on my shortlist Smile

Thanks for sharing! I enjoyed. And even though you have no idea who I am, I do have a couple of things I would say if you don't mind.

I would agree with olly on the shortness of your words. I think part of the issue is a sense of connectivity (is that even a word?lol). It sounds very stilted at times and I think there needs to be more of a sense of phrasing. Instead of singing each word, sing the phrase and connect the thought all the way through. That would help with cutting words too short.

On some of the high notes you scoop up (just the tiniest bit) to the note instead of hitting it right on the head. It's a very pop-y sound and it's what our ears here a lot so it is hard to just sing purely the note that is meant to be sung. It doesn't sound bad, it's just an observation.

On the part "...let your sould take you where you long to BE!" you hit the note great but it started to fall flat. Otherwise, very nice. Same with the two higher notes towards the end.

But that very last note you hold doesn't falter in pitch at all (at least not to my ears, and although I have a good ear I don't have perfect pitch). It was lovely.

Overall I thought it sounded very nice.

Again, I enjoyed, thanks for sharing!

Tj@themusicals

Thank you!
I know what you mean about singing phrases, I know exactly why I do it too. I hate singing to backing tracks, I love live music, and I would usually be accompanying myself on guitar or piano, therefore I can push and pull the music whenever I like. Karaoke tracks have no life or feeling, they are just played straight to a click track. Sad
You're right about that note falling flat though, I hadn't noticed when recording it through headphones, but as soon as I uploaded it and listened back through my speakers I heard it! Ah well Smile
I don have alot of Pop sensibilities in my voice as that is what I've sung before, this is my first attempt at musical theatre, but I'm loving it Smile
Thank you though for your comments, I agree totally! Smile

Haha! I know what you mean about those karaoke tracks. They're so annoying sometimes...it's like dead music (is there such a thing?) lol And for your first attempts at musical theatre it sounds pretty good! Once you get hooked, it's hard to get away from it Very Happy

And so will I. I don't know how many soprano versions of "Stars" the world has seen, even god-awful ones, but I plan to try. Laughing
eponine5

While your at it, why not get a soprano friend and try a soprano version of the Confrontation. Laughing I'd love to hear Javert's first few lines of that!
Tj@themusicals

Just thought I would say that I now have a rough version of One song glory from Rent up on the page now Smile

hehe that would be fun yep.
I did a sporano version of Bring Him Home and put it up here ages ago. It was a giggle.

In F, or in A? I've sung it several times in F, but A would be... interesting.
Aimee

Erm, the top note wasthe B flat...... I think. What key's that?
Lazarus (Adam G)

It'd be funny to replace the Low F with a Soprano F "you'll wear a different CHAIN____!"
Cloudy This Morning

Damn. Now I need a soprano to do Confrontation with. Anyone?
Lazarus (Adam G)

I thought you were a soprano?

You could always replace the Soprano F with a Tenor/Alto F or something.
Cloudy This Morning

I am a soprano, but I need another one! Two---No! I could just do the whoe thing myself! I've learned to use Audacity! Yeah! YEAH!!!
Lazarus (Adam G)

Oh! Valjean's last line during the Duet portion "do what must be done"... Do a insanely high note...be shrill and annyoing!!!
Cloudy This Morning

Bahaha! No problem! That will be fun as hell. Shrill and annoying I can do. Believe me. I'll go falsetto and everything.
