Someone was just being an idiot, I reckon.
I posted several videos from this production. If I can find more video-splicing software, I'll add more. |

I got a bunch of songs with Sutton, including On My Own, Look Down, and A Little Fall of Rain, from Limewire. I just love her voice!

Not to start a debate or anything, especially since I'm a newbie both here and to the musical (fell in love w/ it in June at the Queen's Theatre!), but do people generally like Eponines with more of an urchin-like quality or not?
I mean, I agree that Sutton Foster has an amazing voice but it bothers me that she staccatos most of her notes, as she does in that youtube clip of "One Day More". I don't know if this is because of Sutton's or the director's interpretation of Eponine as a waif; but I like it better when 'Ponines like Shonagh Daly and Lea Salonga hold out the notes, even though they give her a more...i dunno...sophisticated quality? Kinda trivial, but I'm just interested in what everybody has to say about this topic, since I've seen fans on both sides of the fence how to interpret this character. |

Well, IMHO Eponine should NEVER act or sound remotely sophisticated. I like Eponine's who don't have perfectly pretty voices. It suits the character and just works better for me. And I love it when they act "street brat" too.

I just downloaded a lot of Sutton clips. If you want them, just PM me.

Nice clip of Sutton Foster from Youtube in "Look Down" and "The Robbery". You guys are right, she has a great voice and she's also superb at staying in character! Didn't see that until now Thanks for putting up.

I just thought I had to add to this thread's record of Eponine usernames. I have to say though, I win when it comes to unoriginality.
Welcome to the site EponinesRain. Love your signature, that's my favourite cast! Back on topic.... mostly. I really like Sutton Foster's interpretation, it's different from most others and she really does have an amazing voice. I didn't particularly like her Robbery though, it sounded too sweet and sort of expressionless IMO. |

Fantine |
It saddens me that Fantine never gets the appreciation she deserves. (looking at my own username). I have never seen anyone who has a username devoted to everyone's favourite blonde. Anyway, I like rough Eponine. I liked Sutton and Shonagh. |

It's true. It's actually surprising how little fanfiction, fanart and the like she gets, considering she is such a great character. On the other hand, it means that she is spared all the butchering through fanfiction that other characters get *cough*Eppie-Sue*cough*, but I agree, Fantine really should get more recognition from the general Les Miserables fans. Let's make an annual Fantine day on this site... section of site! |

I love how Sutton Foster just plops down and eats like a pig during "Look Down".
Perfect for the character. |

Sutton is really the best at that part. It's amazing so many people on YouTube comment negatively on her, all based on really dumb, minor things. It's usually the Lea fanatics that comments out of their butts. No offense to Lea fans, by the way, lol!!!!
eponine5 |
I know what you mean. Some of the Lea fans on Youtube act as if it is a personal insult when someone even mentions that they prefer another actress to Lea. They turn every comments page into an argument and won't accept the fact that other actors do exist. And for God's sake, the part of Eponine does not belong to anyone. Except Victor Hugo, that is. I doubt he could sing On My Own though
Sutton Foster really is one of the best Eponines. I never saw her live , but from what I've seen of the videos, she adds in so many original aspects to the role. |

True. Fantine has to be my second favorite character. 'I Dreamed a Dream' and 'Fantine's Death' tug just as hard on my heart strings as Eponine's songs do. That's not to say that either of them are "oh, pity me" characters, though, because they each strike me as strong women, if not two of the strongest in the musical. Hey- I like Shonagh, Lea, AND Sutton! As long as they're not too far off with interpreting 'Ponine's character, I think it's even better that each adds little nuances to the role to make it her own! Though, Shonagh was one friggin' loud Eponine, hahaha. Oh well. |

I posted those, and I have the full video...
Shhh.... |

I prefer What I've seen of Sutton to Lea's performance on TAC. But I think Lea's A Little Fall of Rain is better.

To me, Lea just sounds pretty.
But Fantine, I love Fantine. You have my Fantine appreciation, haha. |

Heehee thank you I've missed you btw!

Aww, thanks dear. | ||||||

I don't recall Eponine ever eating on stage. As for whether her voice should warble and be rough... Actresses can find other ways of making Eponine sound unsophisticated. For instance, speaking in a lower-class register. In a Linguistics class I had in college, I learned that people in the lower/working class do not say -ing; they say -in, as in walkin'. An actress could easily change her pronunciations to sound less sophisticated while maintaining a beautiful voice. After all, you're paying to hear good singing. Anyway, I personally prefer an actress who holds a note and transitions into a more stocatto sound for the last few beats. |

Colle |
Sutton has become a performer that I wish I could have seen live in Les Mis, along with Lea Salonga among others. Her approach to "On My Own" kind of reminds me a Lea, angry and determined. I wish there was a legal recording of her in Les Mis.

You mean, singing vibrato? 'Cause I actually don't really like how Sutton staccaos her notes-- I prefer them held out as Lea Salonga does, though I still love how Sutton portrays Eponine. Her words just seem 'jolty' to me, and it kind of takes away from the song. But she is SPOT ON tune/pitch and her voice is nothing short of amazing. Both Sutton and Lea play her all fiesty and determined, too, like Colle mentioned. I guess I'm just picky with the beats and durations because I'm so used to the 10th anniversary version, hah. |

What the hell are you talking about? |

*raises hand* Fantine is my favourite of all the female roles! Although you're right, no-one else really has Fantine names. |
||||||
Lazarus (Adam G) |
Right after Garvoche's bit about Eponine. Watch her. |
||||||
The Very Angry Woman |
Nope. Don't see it. Saw Sutton live once and saw every single one of her successors after that (except Raegan Kotz). Eponine never eats in that scene. |
||||||
Fantine |
I can see how it looks like she's eating, because she is holding her letters rather close to her face (as you see her from the back). But those are definitely her letters.
Lazarus (Adam G) |
Oooooh... | ||||||
The Very Angry Woman |
Oh, is that what you're talking about. They're the flyers Marius and Enjolras are giving out. |
||||||
EponinesRain |
Hrm, or are they the fradulent begging letters that Thenardier, as various aliases, makes Eponine deliver? Though, that is only mentioned in the book, isn't it? |
||||||
The Very Angry Woman |
They're the Aux Armes flyers. You can watch her receive them. |
||||||
Colle |
I have be able to watch the whole clip of "Look Down" and "the Robbery." Besides watching Sutton, it is good to refresh my memory of J.P. Doughtery as Thenardier and Aymee Garica as Madame Thenardier, the only ones in this clip I know I have seen live. One little touch of Sutton's that I like is her taking a swipe at Gavroche. It reminded me of Rona Figueroa, who did the same thing. It must have been standard(or at least encouraged) for awhile. It could have been a director thing though, does anyone know if Rona and Sutton both had Ron LaRosa as their director on the tour? |
