The Different Recordings

So, I was musing... I was thinking about all the different recordings one could own of Les Miserables... I am trying to formulate a list so, by the time I'm 25, I'll hopefully have a lot of them (I know, a hollow wish...) But, please add some if I've missed, or add some. Also, I do reaslise that there'll be some in that list that are classed as "Budget"... Very Happy Thanks:

I do realise that I'm missing various casts, such as the Israeli cast, but I can't seem to find any information on that CD - if someone could enlighten me... Are there any other unusual casts, such as a Hungarian cast? If you could provide links, that would be much appreciated. As I say, I'm trying to formulate a list.

Many thanks,

Olly

The Tel Aviv cast recording was never released on CD. It was only ever manufctured on tape and LP.

What is the Tel Aviv? Forgive me, is that a country or a city? What dialect or language is it spoken in? Do you have a copy?

I don't think we were quite nearly as shocked by your choice of terminolgy as much as your blatant ignorance of world geography.

Just a thought.
olly

Very Happy Yes, I maybe should have known it, but I didn't. But now I do. I don't worry about my geography TVAW Rolling Eyes

I think you should change your name to the Very Very Angry Woman! Just a thought!!!
Oh and its spelt 'Manufactured' by the way!! Laughing

Now now- there's no need for that! I care! Now, where were we. ah yes, I would like to know if anyone has the cast recording from oslo. What they thought of it and also, what is the oslo? Where is this place and what language do they speak? Do they do the performance on two legs?
olly

Oh, gosh, that's funny, that's really good! Do you make this up by yourself? Do you? Because, I've never heard someone make that kind of joke before. Hm, you're the first. God, what a clever, smart girl you must be to take that statement and use it out of context to insult me in this situation. Hm, so fresh, too. Any, any Titanic jokes you want to throw at me as long as we're hitting these phenomena at the height of their popularity? Hm? Cause I'm here. God you're funny. Applause Laughing

Finally! Someone who appreciates the wit of me!!! I try ya know? I really do, I try so hard. It's like I hear the joke in my head but its hard to get it across without vocals. Also timing- comic timing- now that's a hard one. But it really paid off this time! Thanks for your positive feed back, nothing personal you understand, its just I saw the link and went for it! Thanks again!!! Laughing

OFC and TAC, though those were probably included under 'various studio casts,' huh?

There are recordings from Vienna, Budapest, Stockholm, Varmland (in Sweden), and Korea as well. The Hungarian, Korean, and Varmland ones are fairly rare though; Korean's out of print, Hungarian and Israeli were never released on CD, and I don't know much about the Varmland recording. There have been a few of the Hungarian records (or records converted to CD) floating around ebay lately, though they're always quite expensive. Likewise the Israeli cast is usually up on ebay and I bought one for about $25, but it got lost in the post and I never heard from the seller again. Or got my money back, for that matter. So watch out.

Oslo is a small country. It is located in the middle of the city of Germany.

Yep, they are. Hmm, there are many more recordings; well, if I keep hoping, they may pop up on ebay.

Is there a decent used CD store in your area? You wouldn't believe what I've found in some of those places. (Besides Darkman II on VHS; don't ask.)

Most of them are available on www.footlight.com , www.soundofmusic.de , and similar sites. Of course, they run rather expensive, but then so do the ebay auctions.

No, there isn't. Our town only has places like HMV and Virgin Megastore etc; there's no used music stores... Having said that, I am not 100%, so I'll ask the tourist centre - they should know. Thanks

HeHeHe! You're alright olly! There aren't many of us comic genius's on this site, especially with such well disguised modesty as myself! Although methinks that The Very Angry Woman is a bit of a closet comic!!!! Keep'em coming TVAW!!! Nice to have a little outburst every now and then isn't it!!!

I've just bought the German recording. Is it any good? Anyone have it?
Orestes Fasting

olly wrote:

Which one? There are two in German, though one is technically Austrian.

The Duisburg one is pretty good. Great Fantine and Javert especially, and the Enjolras ain't half bad. But the Vienna one is... to put it nicely... not that great, and the translation is terrible. They changed or cut the worst offenders for the Duisburg recording (I have a sneaking suspicion that's why ALFOR isn't there), but there are still some brain-bendingly bad lyrics.

But aside from the lyrics, the Duisburg one has very few weak points. The cast sounds... hm, how to put it... high-energy? Great rendition of One Day More.
olly

The recording I purchased is:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000024SJ1/qid=1147378082/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/203-6201320-1425553
Orestes Fasting

Ah, yes, that's the Duisburg one.
olly

I was looking on eBay, and I came across this recording. I'm not sure what it is: it only gives two cast members names, and I don't think it's a normal one, unless I'm mistaken. Thanks

It's a studio recording, with only Claire Moore and Dave Willetts- they sing all the numbers themselves. It's not overly bad, but it does get silly at times and the backings are rubbish, but Claire Moore is great as ever. Don't buy it from Ebay because you can often buy it for 1.99 in HMV or Virgin if you're interested. Cover looks like this

'One Day More' isn't included in the selections. They duet on 'DYHTPS'.

Sorry if this is a bit off topic but I thought this may be the best place to post this.

I just noticed that iTunes has both the concept album and the French revival recording. Being that I can only order one at a time, which you would you all recommend first?
olly

I personally dislike the French Concept, because it doesn't seem 'Les Mis-y' enough; I don't like the orchestration. However, I've known some people who really like the Concept because it's 'different'. So, I'd recommend you go for the revival recording if you want a recording that has a good orchestration, with the same songs, but a different cast and language. I prefer this, because I prefer the music. However, if you want to hear something a littel out of the ordinary, I'd go for the Concept.

Thank you very much for the response!

I'm very interested in the differences so I purchased the concept, I'm about to listen to it. I may type up a review and post it here when I'm done. I'll eventually buy the revival when I get some more money.

Cool! Hope you like it. Smile
Fantine

I love the Concept myself because it is different Smile I can really enjoy it.
Orestes Fasting

I personally love the concept album--I like the gritty, harsher sound, I like the absence of synths, I like the electric guitars (heh), and I really really really like " la volont du peuple." The first time I heard that album I went "wtf is this crap?" and didn't listen to it for a while, but now it's one of my favorites.
olly

What do all think of the Dutch recording? Is it any good? For 23, is it worth it?
Mademoiselle Lanoire

I like a lot of things about the OFC. The lyrics, the instrumentation, and several of the cast.

What I didn't like, however, was the plot, the narrative structure. Too much is left out that shouldn't be. The addition of the prologue was definitely one of the things that was an improvement in the jump to London.
Fantine

Being a Dutchie, I don't like the translations at all. I also don't like Pia Douwes and Henk Poort.. So that leaves rather little Wink But I guess it must be totally different for a foreigner who speaks a foreign tongue.

The Dutch one is actually one of the worst LM casts I've ever heard. Pia Douwes as Fantine and Joke de Kruijf as Cosette are basically its only saving graces. For 23, you can do a lot better.

Edit: I don't speak enough Dutch to be able to judge the quality of the translation, but those Dutch 'g's are really distracting. *g* And if it's anything like the German translation... *shudder*

Orcherstrations are quite good actually... different. I could post IDAD and OMO if you like. Voices... Hmm I don't really like them. Pia, Joke and Henk are the 'older garde'... Trained uhm... The old way. I don't know how to explain it. I was going to say that I didn't own the Dutch Cast Recording but I do Shocked So I could upload more.....
