The Original Australian Production

I listened to them for first few minutes, and turned it off after awhile because I couldn't stand it. The show didn't have the solos during the Work Song and the entire scene with the bishop gets reduced, and starts at "Tell me quickly what's the story..." Also, Valjean doesn't get kicked out of a job or an inn, and the line "the boss he never knows..." was cut out also. I turned it off right around there. Wasn't particularly memorable.

This was the cast list I got - Normie Rowe, John Diedrich, Debbie Byrne, Marina Prior, Peter Cousens, Laura Hamilton, Anthony Warlow, Bill Zappa, Robyn Arthur.

Who played who though? I know Anthony Warlow was Enjolras, Debbie Byrne was Fantine, and I'm guessing Peter Cousens was Marius, but what about the rest?
Quique

The original Australian production did not cut anything. Maybe the recording you have is badly edited, or something?

Valjean - Normie Rowe
Javert - John Diedrich
Cosette - Marina Prior
Marius - Peter Cousens
Eponine - Laura Hamilton
Thenardier - William Zappa
Mme. Thenardier - Robyn Arthur

I think that's right, but not 100% sure. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Laura Hamilton?

If that's her, she must not have really valued her Les Mis experience... lol I don't think it's mentioned anywhere on her website.
Quique

That's not her. Maybe TVAW or Orestes could help positively identify them. I'm not good with cast info.
mastachen

Oh.. :/ I thought not. She looked pretty young on her website.
Megziid

Wasn't Eponine played by Jodie Gilles?
mastachen

Going off the "help me find the cast" theme, does anyone know what the cast was when Lea Salonga joined the Broadway cast in '93?
Orestes Fasting

Valjean: Mark McKerracher
Javert: Richard Kinsey
Fantine: Rachel York
Eponine: Lea Salonga
Marius: Eric Kunze
Cosette: Jennifer Lee Andrews
Enjolras: Joseph Mahowald
Thnardier: Drew Eschelman

Alright, alright... you guys are a veritable font of information...

Okay.

I first saw Les Mis in Greensboro, North Carolina around the year 2000 at the War Memorial Auditorium. It's one of the two playbills I've ever lost in my life, and I have had many unsuccessful google attempts to figure out what cast I saw. It was obviously a tour... but if anyone can help me in any way, I'd be in your debt.

ETA: I seem to remember the Valjean went into falsetto a lot...?
Timmy_Wishes he was Quast

Joseph Mahowald didn't he go on to be a Javert?! at some point? I seem to remember him captioned somewhere as such...but can't find it!

AND where do you guys get these bootlegs from? Any tips where to find them?

Does this sound right?

Valjean: Ivan Rutherford
Javert: Stephen Bishop
Fantine: Joan Almedilla
Eponine: Diana Kaarina
Marius: Stephen Brian Patterson
Cosette: Stephanie Waters
Enjolras: Stephen Tewksbury
Thnardier: JP Dougherty
Mme Thnardier: Aymee Garcia

Greensboro was shortly after San Francisco, and I don't think there were too many significant cast changes for a few months after that. That list should be right, and I believe the kids were Emma Hunton, Maggie Martinsen, Brennan Pickman-Thoon, and Cameron Teitelman.

Joseph Mahowald was Javert starting around fall 2001 and also performed the role in Seoul when Michael McCarthy left after Shanghai. (Mahowald went to Broadway when McCarthy did Shanghai.)

Probably you were listening to the audio ripped off the Australia Day Concert Video. It's a concert version thus there're a lot of cuts. But the cast list I have is a little different from yours: Normie Rowe (Valjean), John Diedrich (Javert), Debra Byrne (Fantine), Anthony Warlow (Enjolras), Peter Cousens (Marius), Marina Prior (Cosette), William Zappa (Thenadier), Robyn Arthur (Mme. Thenadier).

I don't know who's the Eponine either.
Orestes Fasting

Sylvie Paladino?
mastachen

It's not Laura Hamilton? Confused I'm curious now. Who is this mysterious Eponine?? lol

Windbelle, your cast list isn't all that different, I think. Bill Zappa and William Zappa I'm pretty sure are the same person.

May I ask, where did you hear this?

I did not know there was a recording of the original Australian production.

Did you hear a bootleg or an official release?

Well, I was told it was the Original Australian production, but according to Windbelle, it could also be the Australian concert, so I'm not really sure.

I'm really surprised at how casual people have been about this.
Jekkienumber24601

I would be excited for a australlian recording, but Warlow's on the complete symphonic...so theres no point...
Laurelin

Ok, I wasn't really planning to register as I'm much more a lurker by nature, but I just had to clarify a few things Smile

The original Australian cast (27 November 1987) consisted of:

Valjean - Normie Rowe
Javert - Philip Quast
Fantine - Debbie Byrne
Marius - Simon Burke
Cosette - Marina Prior
Eponine - Jodie Gillies
Enjolras - Anthony Warlow
Thenardier - Barry Langrishe
Madame Thenardier - Robyn Arthur

On the first anniversary the cast changed to:

Valjean - Normie Rowe
Javert - John Diedrich
Fantine - Debbie Byrne
Marius - Peter Cousens
Cosette - Marina Prior
Eponine - Laura Hamilton
Enjolras - Anthony Warlow
Thenardier - William (Bill) Zappa
Madame Thenardier - Robyn Arthur

This was the principal cast who performed at the Australia Day Concert in January 1989. Shortly after the concert Marina Prior left and was replaced by Carrie Barr and a month or so later Laura Hamilton left and was replaced by Zoe Bertram.

The show then moved to Melbourne and the cast was:

Valjean - Rob Guest
Javert - John Diedrich
Fantine - Debbie Byrne
Marius - Peter Cousens
Cosette - Carrie Barr
Eponine - Sylvie Paladino
Enjolras - Anthony Warlow
Thenardier - Peter Carroll
Madame Thenardier - Robyn Arthur

During the Melbourne run Debbie Byrne left and was replaced by Peta Toppano and Anthony Warlow left and was replaced by Rohan Tickell.

After that the cast was pretty stable for the rest of the tour through Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and Auckland except for Philip Quast and Bill Zappa returning for the Adelaide season, Jodie Gillies substituting for Sylvie Paladino for a few weeks in Adelaide, Christine ??? (blanking on surname - and my programmes are at home) replacing Peta Toppano halfway through the Adelaide season, Brisbane and Auckland and Anita Louise Combe replacing Carrie Barr for Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and Auckland.

More information than you ever probably wanted or needed to know Wink
Laurelin

Oops and I forgot that Philip Quast also returned to play Javert for the Auckland season.

^ Thanks for the info! I had no idea Debbie stayed with the show for so long.

I have the documentary "Les Miserables: The Australian Sensation" which features most of the final Aussie cast listed above. I kept getting comments on YouTube from members who were confused as to why Marina Prior, Simon Burke, and Philip Quast weren't in the documentary, and I kept telling them the show had played there a few years and those cast members had been replaced by the time it was shot. Even so, I'd still get PMs from people perplexed as to why the cast was different, lol.

YouTube recently deleted my original account, grrr. But I'll eventually re-upload it for anyone who hasn't seen it.
lesmisloony

^^Ooh, please do!
OldDeuteronomy

the whole reason the CSR was made was because an Austrailian Cast Album was too expensive

That documentary was filmed with the second cast in Sydney after Marina Prior and Laura Hamilton left. They actually only finished filming it very shortly before the show closed in Sydney on 15 July 1989.

There was then a six month gap before the production moved to Melbourne because the Princess Theatre was being renovated and it wasn't finished on time. It eventually opened in Melbourne in December 1989.
