Thenardiers Gang

Okay, so I am in a show of Les Mis, and we have girls playing thenardiers gang
Our director gave us the choice of playing guys or girls..and I wanted to see what anyone here would say about that matter
I think it would look a bit weird as us dressed up as guys, but I cant figure out how to play it as girls

Suggestions and comments are welcome
thanks so much

Well, Montparnasse is a hair away from being a woman.....

Wow, there weren't ANY guys you could have used??
The Very Angry Woman

I saw a LMSE where the entire gang was girls. They were dressed rather androgynously.

*weeps* I HATE THIS!!! Why cast women in male roles!!?!? If you don't have the people to do the show...DON'T DO IT!
Lazarus (Adam G)

The local Gayman's Choir did "Gaymiserables" and that was one disturbing show (all men in every role).
Impossible Dream

Laughing I bet that was a sight to see. Did they just have men in drag for the female roles, or did they change those to male as well?

And the barricade was a gay rights protest? "Can you hear the gay men sing, singing the song of angry queers. It is the music of a people who have been repressed for years ..."

There is a life about to start when the world turns pink!"

Re. Thenardier's gang - I do think it looks a lot better to have them played as male, but if you really don't have any spare men available (surely SOMEONE can double?? The Bishop, maybe?) then androgynous - looking girls will do.
Aimee

hehehe, I like!!

As to the gang, I say let girls play it, there are far less girls roles in the show anyway, but let them play it as men and use flat chested and tall women if possible. Smile

That's often the case for many LMSEs, regardless of gender.

In the UK at least the regulations for performing rights state that the main parts must all be played by the appropriate gender (and for single sex schools it is suggested that you collaborate with another school for the casting) but I don't think anything is specified about the chorus.

For anyone who requested the full Gay Mis lyrics, here they are: http://musicals.net/forums/viewtopic.php?p=637834#637834

In the high school production I saw, Babet and Courfeyrac were both girls and they had female roles. It wasn't a problem with just one gang member being a girl but I can see how an all girl gang would be a little odd.

Montparnasse should deffinatally be male. He can be androgynous though, because he's obsessived with being beautiful and elegant. He shouldn't be female, though, because he's in a... relationship with Eponine. Also, if he's a girl, that kinda takes away from his obsession with his apperence... because its kinda normal for girls to act that way. (The musical doesn't mention any of this... It kinda makes me sad, because "Thenardier's gang" or Patron-Minette, as they are called in the book, are my faverite characters)

Claquesous can go either way. He's a dark mysterous guy, so I don't see why a girl couldn't protray that.

Brujon (he takes Gueulemer's place, in the musical, right?) is a strong, but stupid thug. I guess he could be a big scary girl... but I highly seggest having him be male. 0_o

Babet is frail and cunning, could go either way. Out of all of them, he could probably get away with being female the best... He does have a wife and children (or did before he misplaced them...) but thats not mentioned in the musical, so I guess that doesn't really matter.

Very Happy I hope it turns out well.
Aimee

If they are women should you change the lyrics? 'Three women I saw beyond the wall. Three women in shadow, moving fast.'
