I definitely know the music director for the one at Moonlight in Vista.

I'm auditioning to be in the ensemble but I might have some conflicts, and the competition is apparently going to be fierce. So we'll see if they want a fat 18 year old right out of high school.
mastachen

I definitely wanna go see the ones in California. Moonlight is a bit far though :/ But Hollywood isn't!

There's also a production at Fullerton College in July. Don't know if that counts as regional or not though.
le_moofin

Encore Youth Theatre (associated with Greater Hamilton Civic Theatre), Hamilton, OH (some time in July/August, lol).

That's my summer theatre group (we have auditions pretty soon). Wish me luck! I'm hoping for a role, any role... ideally Cosette, but it might be easier for me to get Eponine, Fantine, or Mme. Thenardier.
curlyhairedsoprano91

One of these is going to be my first pro audition in a few weeks!

What difference does it make? It's still a production of Les Mis that people can go see in the summer.
Quique

Yeah, but it should be made clear which of the above are S.E. productions and which ones are not, as not everyone wants to see kids performing a severely shortened version of the show.
mastachen

Are college productions usually Student Edition?

I know on the Fullerton College website, it says it is, but someone I know who's involved in the production told me it was the full show.
Quique

I don't know. Personally I don't mind that others are mentioning the S.E. productions. It's just that this thread is specifically about the regional ones and it sort of got hijacked. But then again, most threads do, so meh, lol.

Oh, sorry... although they haven't actually announced while version they're doing yet. I'd suspect it's the school edition, but I could see them "adding" a few things here and there from the original show.

I don't think it would be practical. You have to be 19 or under to be in a LMSE. (If you obey the contract, anyway.) So you'd pretty much restrict yourself to only about half the student body when auditioning.

The production in Vista, CA was uber disappointing. My friend and I actually left after Javert bit it.

I dunno. Maybe if we were closer to center it would have been better, but we were way stage left at a huge outdoor amphitheatre.

I just got back from this (I didn't even know it was playing in Quebec - great timing since it got extended til Oct 19th (from Sept 14th - before I got there)) and it is absolutely incredible.

It's all in French but the performances are very good and for some reason, it's more emotional watching it. The one thing that worried me was there was no rotating stage but they did such a great job with the sets that at times it played better without the rotating set (the times it didn't: the final battle at the barricade, . The stage is flat fake cobblestone and raised in the back and they use it to enter/exit performers (stairs in the back) to great effect (such as spirit of Ep coming in to sing with the spirit of Fantine).

There are so many different changes (really nuances) that it was a new experience. I'm not as hard-up on what was missing but the big ones for me were the Confrontation (yes, I discussed it with some of the cast after the show, they speak a little English, and they agreed it was sad to see it cut), shorter Marius/Cosette/Eponine "Heart Full of Love", and shorter wedding scene.

Otherwise, there were so many cool new things (or maybe I just never noticed before): the coolest was when Valjean and little Cosette walk after freeing her and they walk into the back of the stage and Valjean turns around and little Cosette goes into the dark and older Cosette comes out of the dark. It was bone-chilling cool. The actress playing Cosette says that everyone loves that trick. Also, just prior to that, when Valjean settles with the Thenardiers, a spotlight just briefly illuminates Fantine standing in the back. Freaky!

Little things include: lots of writing (briefly) on the see-through curtain (e.g., 1815, Digne; all major characters for the first time (which would be cool for someone who hasn't seen Les Mis before); the names of the dead students during Empty Chairs Empty Tables); Ep beginning to open Marius' letter to Cosette and then after delivering it to Valjean, eavesdropping on Valjean reading the letter and then picking up the letter after Valjean discards of it; only 2 shots to down Gavroche instead of 3 (the women and Gavroche are sent away but he sneaks back in and when he says he'll get more ammo, Enjolras pushes him away in jest but Gavroche still goes up anyway and gets shot right away (remember, no rotating stage) which shocked me); because Gavroche dies inside the barricade, the protector (drunk guy?) screams in agony and holds Gavroche - and for the final battle he comes with vengence/revenge on his mind; Ep climbing over the wall after Marius (I forgot to tell the actress that it was impressive that she jumped down the wall) upon trying to meet Cosette, then Ep teasing the Thenardier gang as she threatens to scream (gang on the other side of the gate)) which was cute; the music for when the scene changes to Fantine dying was slightly unique and I thought better than the original; really great orchestra (~17 musicians); Javert actually jumps OFF the stage (in the back), probably the first realistic suicide that won't confuse first-time Les Mis watchers; when One Day More begins, Cosette slowly/subtlely hands a letter (assume it's to say she's leaving) to Marius who is coming out to sing his part, which ties up a loose end; in Master of the House, one of the patrons is stripped of his clothes (after the usual stripping of his wallet) which was very funny; Ep staring at Cosette (of course, Cosette is clueless) for about 5 seconds after Marius introduces her to Cosette - lots of cool little new Ep scenes in this production; in the middle of Master of the House (between the 1st and 2nd poor patrons), the music stops and it goes to Valjean meeting Cosette, which I think provides a better timeline and contrasts it to the Thenardier's fun after sending Cosette into the forest, after the meeting, the rest of Master of the House ensues - I think this was cool, though I was confused and disappointed at first that MOTH was going to be cut short; for some reason, I think this is normal, but it surprised me when Thenardier opens up Valjean's shirt to reveal his number after recognizing him and Valjean has to quickly cover up before Javert comes in; One Day More is arranged differently (e.g., Ep singing/longing on a park bench) which is cool because it was different and done well (no rhythmic step up/step back but it was cool nonetheless); a guard accompanies Javert upon meeting Valjean/Marius out of the sewer and Javert actually orders his guard to carry Marius to safety (which makes more sense since Valjean is weak at this point); Valjean actually, upon hearing Marius' name for the first time, grabs his shoulder and looks at him (Marius seemed like he saying "who are heck are you?") for a moment; Marius resists the others trying to help carry Ep away and carries Ep all by himself off the stage (good moment); Ep spends the first half of ALFOR standing up which was a little odd but when her knees collapse and she falls into Marius' arms, it's dramatic (last half of the song in his arms, and yes, the kiss on the forehead).

Also:
Gavroche is tall and Thenardier is short; there were about 36 actors/actresses which seemed large for a Les Mis show; the ending (Tomorrow Comes) is almost like the cast coming out to take their bow (so there's clapping during the end of the song, which was weird); the REAL cast coming out was really fun and the actors were getting into it leading the audience in a rhythmic clap cheer Applause - awesome; for some reason, the locals don't clap at the usual spots, so it was sometimes weird because I didn't want to be the only one clapping; Cosette had some type of weave in her hair, from in the front balcony it looked a little like Princess Leia's honeybuns; there's a few new musical arrangements (e.g., prelude to Fantine death scene), and I think it most worked for the better; the actors/actresses tend to not move around/move their arms/hands too much (e.g., IDAD, Bring Him Home) which doesn't really bother me); lots of live gunshots (at medium sound level) but no really LOUD gunshots, which is good.

Recommend: No doubt. A new experience with Les Mis and when was the last time Les Mis was performed in French? (I think it was 1991 in Paris). Unfortunately, there is no recording (I would love, love, love to have a recording from this cast) and no Quebec-specific Les Mis merchandise. It's playing til Oct 19th as part of the city's 400th anniversary celebration. The orch is a combo of tables (dinner is served before the show Fri/Sat) but I think sitting in the front balcony were great seats. Because the stage is a bit higher, it is probably not a great view from the first several rows in the Orch. The cast comes out by the stage (and exit like the audience does (walk up the orch section to the back) and they let you take pictures after the show (inside the theatre), so I got photos with Ep, Cosette, Fantine, and Jean Valjean. JV (Gino Quilico) was excellent (though he does not move around as much as other JVs) as was Fantine (even in French, she had an "older, tired" voice (in a good way) which makes IDAD and her death songs so emotional and heartfelt), Ep (Sophie Tremblay; was worried she was too tall but she wins you over - thank goodness!), Cosette (Myriam Brousseau)), and Javert. And extremely nice (Sophie even said "goodbye" to me by name as she was leaving (this was like 10 minutes after only briefly talking with her because she was with company) and I had a great convo with Myriam and her understudy about auditioning, whether this French version would tour (unfortunately, no), and what she plans to do in the future).

I'm still on a high from seeing the show. It was also cool because the lady sitting next to me had never seen Les Mis before so she was gasping at the right times (e.g., Fantine dies, Ep dies, Gavroche is shot, recognizing at the end that the candlestick holders are the same ones Valjean got from the Bishop (I think I noticed this on like my 4th viewing)) which wasn't annoying but cool to know someone enjoying Les Mis. The last 3 Les Mis's I've seen have been my first Broadway (w/Lea Salonga), the Hollywood Bowl In-Concert, and now in French. Three unique Les Mis experiences.

You know what, I think In My Life was cut, which is sort of bad, but it still was a great show.

I get to hear those two sing pretty much every day.

(The other night, I snuck out into the house and watched a good chunk of Act II - the barricade was simply amazing, and for the first time in a very long while, "A Little Fall Of Rain" made me cry).

I wish I had the resources to see other productions of Les Mis.

Response to the Quebec review

Once again, I wish I could go to Quebec. By the way, did Gino Quilico manage to hit all the high notes? I've been curious about that, since he's a baritone.

Was it cut altogether or just cut short like in the School Edition?

No (not like Randall Keith), but his VJ was consistent throughout and I really enjoyed him.

It was an A+ production (just without the rotating stage) and had most of the little pieces (Cosette & VJ meeting, Cosette caring for Marius after the barricades and VJ asking Cosette to leave so he can talk w/Marius alone, all the current Gavrouch scenes (e.g., last time on Broadway), Ep opining about knowing Cosette (another great Ep scene), etc.). There was also a nice scene, at the end of the wedding scene where all the actors go off the stage except for a lone (anonymous) couple who dance slowly off the stage (probably to allow for some scene reconfig). Kind of a nice transition scene.

Edit: Forgot to add that it was a full 3 hour show with intermission.

Here are some clips of Quilico in various scenes from operas. Just because I feel like showing people what he's like in his typical repertoire. Besides, most of these are from the 80s, so he's young and sexy. Very Happy

A traditional Don Giovanni! Oh, how rare in our days. Stupid Regietheater everywhere, and Don Giovannis in cars...
And he has an earring! Siepi was maybe the last who had it.

Mmm, I like baritone Valjeans, they are more masculine. If Les Mis were an opera, Valjean should be a Verdi-type baritone. He's so much like Simon Boccanegra. And Javert a Wagner-type bass-baritone. Very Happy What he technically is, having exactly the same vocal range as Wotan. (YAY! Obsessions met!)

I saw this one twice. (The second time I had to beg and plead with my mother but she gave in because it was a ten dollar local night.) The first one was when I began my Les Mis obession (and got attacked by killer bees) and it was really good, but the Javert was just...okay. The second time I went, everyone was amazing (except a missed word by Javert and Eponine's voice; I think she was an understudy that night, but I missed hearing whether or not she was because I was busy trying to figure out why they renamed "Javert's Suicide" as "Soliloquy" in the playbill--and yelling that fact for everyone to hear only to realize that they didn't want to spoil anything. Opps. Embarassed ) and the oboe was flat. It drove me insane the entire play! But I still loved it.

I saw the SMC production twice, after having seen Ivan as Valjean probably a dozen times between 2000 and 2004 on tour -- and he really sounded like he'd forgotten how to do 8 shows a week.

Andrea Rivette was fine but not that great, IMO.
