Monsieur D'Arque

Vampire Michael Crawford (an apology)

Dear Les Mis board,

I'm sorry for Vampire Michael Crawford. I didn't intend to spam the entire board with him- he was just a throwaway joke that people responded well to, and I brought him back, again and again and again.

I guess I kind of had the idea that he would become somewhat iconic as a symbol of "everything wrong with musical theater." I had this mental image of his picture, or a caricature thereof, being edited into photos from other shows, like flops, or particularly bad performances. I even imagined people on the streets of new york wearing VMC t-shirts.

If he is no longer welcome here, I will remove him (though probably relocate him to the otherwise inactive Jersey Boys board, where he will wreak havoc). However, if you have accepted him as one of your own, he is here to stay.

Sincerely,
Monsieur D'arque

(who wrote like six plays last year and doesn't have to lie awake at night wondering if VMC is his only contribution to theater culture... but does anyway)
What you own

Monsuier D' Arque You have done it agian. I have fallen off my chair and have died of laughing. Laughing

Will Vampire Micheal Crawford come to my funerl?
Disney-Bway27

I love VMC. I seriously want a VMC T-shirt.
Monsieur D'Arque

For supreme irony, crop him into a [tos] photo. He closed the show! HE DID!

If you're actually sorry for spamming the board and not just trying to elicit a bunch of "no, don't stop, we adore you!" comments, why did you apologize by... spamming the board with an entire new thread on the subject?
Monsieur D'Arque

It was a joke, Orestes. Obviously, you're fairly new to the whole "Vampire Michael Crawford" meme.

Oh gee, how could I ever be such a n00b? Obviously the entire internet revolves around this in-jo--I'm sorry, meme, of yours.
Monsieur D'Arque

Didn't mean to be rude.
Ulla Dance Again!

It does come across as rude.

Honestly, I don't even understand Vampire Michael Crawford. I get that he's part of your play, which is all well and good. But to create a seperate thread about it? What's the sense in that?
Moci

I love Vampire Michael Crawford almost as much as I loved responding to your previous creation, Whiny Eponine.

Anyone got a stake?

I like VMC...although I only get as a MC-digrace-to-musical-theatre gag...I'm not really sure where the vamp thing came from...unless he was in a really vamp musical at some point (like poor Hugh Panaro)?

MC starred in the flop "Dance of the Vampires" on Broadway. From what I've seen, it wasn't very good. Confused

Hugh Panaro was in a vampire musical? When?

I think he'd be quite happy that there's somebody who didn't know he was associated with that fiasco!

especially as it was largely his own fault

^ Talking about Hugh there or MC?

And yes, Hugh was in Lestat, where he played the title role. It lasted about a month on Broadway.
Monsieur D'Arque

Michael Crawford starred in Dance of the Vampires, an English version of the German musical Tanz der Vampire, now retitled in english as Vampire Killers.

However, rather than perform in the show as its star, he insisted on being its artistic director and head script rewriter, changing it from a gothic melodrama into a broad, Mel Brooksian comedy, and completely angering most of the people attached to or familiar with the musical.

The show was a huge hit in its original form, and would probably have been a huge hit in a translation. (The rerelease of the original version, in English, as Vampire Killers, will test this.) However, Crawford's meddling, ego and need for stupid comedy, sank the musical into the ground.

Hence the birth of VMC as a concept.

MC. Wink And I say it was largely his fault for the reasons M d'A sets out above.

I do wonder whether Dance deserved to be a hit, though - I love the music (because I love Jim Steinman's songs) but nearly all of it was recycled from other projects or rock albums. It seems a bit lazy - although with Steinman, it has always been thus. It's still head and shoulders above Mamma Mia, We Will Rock You et al though.

Also the story is similar to Phantom of the Opera, except for the ending. I can understand why Crawford and the producers wanted to differentiate it from that show - unfortunately they way they made it different was to turn it into complete cr@p.
Monsieur D'Arque

Actually, Tanz (or the new Vampire Killers) is much more different than Phantom than Dance was. The new music added as per Crawford's request walked the line between being homage to Phantom, and being blatant parody, especially a "Music of the Night" like number sang in falsetto by a giant bat, and a brand-new, Phantom-esque death scene for the vampire, who survives in the Germanv ersion.

So...will Crawford be involved this rerelease, now known as Vampire Killers?
Monsieur D'Arque

No. It's a complete reboot, and other than the new translator, nothing is known about it, except that it's faithful to the German, and will not have Michael Crawford attached in ANY capacity.
Brother Marvin Hinten, S.

And not to continue steering this any more off-topic than it already was, but the translator has some terrific credentials. I think he's more than capable of turning Vampire Killers into the next big thing.
