What Do You Think of This IDAD?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVZo0IYZ2Tc

It's Shanice, who once played Eponine on broadway singing I Dreamed A Dream. (and she says 'by Susan Boyle' Evil or Very Mad made me a little mad since she was not the original singer)

I was wondering what you guys think of it. Personally, I think its just okay...I don't really like the riffing she does (Riffing is okay in shows like Wicked, In The Heights, and Rent, you know, more 'pop' musicals, but not so much Les Mis) I think it takes away from the emotion and becomes a bit too "show-off" and the "when hopes was high" But she still does have a very nice voice. I was going to comment but I saw that there were some nasty agruements going on...so I was hoping to get your point of view. Smile

this is actually... exactly how I imagine IDAD not to be sung. The riffing is way over the top, it's only half of the song, it's showing off without actually paying attention to the lyrics (literally), and ... it's just... shouting. It sounds like shouting to me, at least.

I liked it. But only cause it's done outside the context of the show. I would have a serious problem with it if she was playing Fantine and sang it like that.

For one, all I hear is voice. No Fantine.

Second, I found myself ignoring the lyrics and paying more attention to her vocal gymnastics.

It sort of annoyed me that she sang the truncated-a-la-Boyle version, but she obviously did it more to show off her voice and I was impressed. She sounds better than in her Eponine days and looks great.

I agree. WAY too poppy for me! I'm okay with pop, but never with Les Miserables.

"by Susan Boyle?" I am personally offended.

I also agree with the anti-Les-Mis-pop sentiments. It does not add anything to the song and is distracting. Also, the Susan Boyle comment irritates me. As someone who was formerly in Les Mis on Broadway she should know better and have some more appreciation for the origins of the show she was a part of. It always bothers me when a great song is automatically attributed to whoever is currently well known for singing it rather than to its composer, lyricist, original performer, etc. I saw another example of this (and this one is perhaps even worse) on Youtube, where one commenter was convinced that Johnny Depp had written the music for Sweeney Todd. Shocked d'oh! Evil or Very Mad

How much longer do you guys think this Boyle thing is going to last?

I see it never ending because there will always be YouTube (or at least some variant of it) and that darn vid will always be accessible. As long as that's out there, the association of IDAD with Boyle will persist.

I kind of mind but am also glad the show has gotten exposure. Annoying thing is most people don't really care that it comes from Les Mis and even claim it's "her song" now.

I agree about the Susan Boyle comment... but I assume that since she did the truncated version Boyle did, she wanted to credit THAT version and not the song in general?

I also agree about the comment of it being okay out-of-context. I would cringe if a stage Fantine sung it like that, but treated as a pop song it sounds fine like that. Not wonderful, but fine.
