When will London Les Mis close?Does anyone know if the London production of Les Mis will be closing in the next few years? It's been going so long, and I was wondering whether ticket sales were still the same, etc.

Tickets are on sale through till December 2007 so we can assume it will keep running until 2007. However, there have been no dates confirmed of it closing and no talk of it either.

People on LondonLesMis who seem to know these things say that some actors have been contracted till June 2007, so at least till then...

I thought I remember reading somewhere that LesMis brings in more people than PotO does in the UK so as long as there are people in the seats I think it will stay open.

Philip Quast in an interview a few years ago said something that shocked and annoyed me:
"I'd like to see Les Miserables off the West End for a few years...

I my personal opinion i think a brief (say 5 year) hiatus would allow a "fresh" and "revigorated" return to the west end, and re-create some of the original spark of the power and majesty which is Les Miserables!
It would also allow new talent to take over the coverted lead roles...and (hopefully)...the release of a revival album. Which by then of course will be the sister to the eargly awaited Broadway revival recording...*crosses fingers*

I think its stupid when people say Les Mis has done its time and its time for something new when we have idiotic musicals like Daddy Cool opening, and Mamma Mia still running.

Hold your horses, let's see how fresh and invigorated the Broadway revival is before we start talking about closing and reviving it on West End. I don't deny that in twenty-one years of running, it's been rather stale at times, but I also think the recent London casts have had some excellent people in them.
There are enough recordings of Les Mis as it stands. We already have five or six English cast recordings; we hardly need a Broadway revival one, let alone one of the London cast.

I'm all for a new revival, but they better not put it in a modern setting...

Well supposedly there will be some new orchestrations when it comes back on Broadway so if there's ever been a time to release a new English cast recordings it will be with the Broadway revival.

London doesn't need to close. They do however need to pay attention to their casting and direction because they've had some duff shows and some brillliant shows over the last 3 years when I've seen it. The show still needs to be 110% brilliant every time someone sees it, whether it's their 1st or 21st time!

Luckily I don't even think it would work in a modern setting.
Knowing my luck, the show will probably close in London right before I finally go there. I hope not though. Tell them to wait a few years!

Yeah, they'd have to do lyric changes at the very least to put it in a modern setting, and only reorchestrations and set/lighting changes have been mentioned. I think they're just going to update some of the technical aspects--the show's twenty-one years old, after all--and do something about the orchestra/synthesizer balance. Whether this is Sir Cameron being cheap and paring down the orchestra even more, or Sir Cameron adding back more orchestra so it doesn't sound like a cheap MIDI anymore, remains to be seen.

They won't. Where'd you get that idea?

They've done that recently with a lot of revivals (JCS is just one example).

Superstar lends itself far more to the concept though. If you tried to set 'Les Mis' in the present day, you'd just encounter problems- Valjean would been electronically tagged for parole, the police force budget wouldn't stretch to following Valjean for so longand Javert would be reassigned to issuing speeding tickets. Marius would be arrested for stalking people, if Eponine hadn't spiked his drink and kidnapped him to be her personal love slave first and Cosette would have been taken by social services.
It'd be funny to watch though.

And plenty more haven't. Look at Into the Woods, A Chorus Line, Chicago, The Pajama Game, 42nd Street, Big River, Pacific Overtures, Nine, Man of La Mancha, and Flower Drum Song. All more or less stuck with the original setting. JCS is the exception, and, as already stated, lends itself to modernization. Les Miz? Not so much.
Yes, Cameron Mackintosh mentioned contemporizing the revival, but more likely than not it refers to technologies and orchestrations, not the setting of the show.

I would pay some serious money to see a bitchy modern Javert handing out speeding tickets while Marius is dragged off by the FBI, screaming something like, "SHE LOVES ME!! JUST ASK HER!!! COOOOSSSETTTTEEEE!"
Serious money.

When will Les Mis close? Not until I've played Eponine, that's when!
Just kidding!

Valjean would pretty much have to be a sex offender. That's really the only crime these days that he would recieve so much venom and hatred for.
