Which 'Les Mis' movie version is closest to the musical?

Hey all! This is my first post in the Les Mis forum (I can usually be found over in the CATS section. Wink) Years ago in French class we watched a black and white version of Les Mis that I enjoyed, but it didn't have any singing. I saw the Tour shortly after and fell in love with the story and music. Lately I've been itching to see it again, so I was wondering: which of the many Les Mis movies is the best to watch in the sense of being closest to the actual musical?

Thanks guys! Wink

Hello

Welcome to Les Miserables forum Very Happy

Since the source material is the novel, and that exicted for over 100 years, all the movies are based on the novel and not the musical.

Furthermore, Cameron Mackintosh ( the producer of Les Mis) is the copyright owner of the musical, so no movie can be based on the musical without him selling those rights.

There are plans though to make a movie based on the musical.

Generally speaking, i am not fond of most of the movie adaptations. My favourite version is an old, black and white french version.

The closest to what you want is the Tenth Anniversary Concert Video/DVD. You can see the singers/actors in costumes, but it is concert.

I hope that helped Very Happy

As far as Les Mis movies go, I hear that the 2001 mini series is pretty good. I have a question about it, what would be the best place for an American to buy this movie?

If you don't mind the 6 hour French version, without subtitles, you can buy used/new off Amazon

If it's the 3hour English you'd like, try Amazon.co.uk and it'd cost you 99p extra for the item and 2.09 for the delivery I think. It is a region 2 DVD though, so you'd need a multi-region player.

I'm still planning on scripting the entire thing in English, using the Dutch subtitles on my version which I recorded from TV. It's a challenge and probably not really worth it... But oh well. Who cares.

Thank you Moci! I am pretty sure I am getting the DVD player that I wanted for Christmas. I just hope it is multi-region, then I'll decide where I go from there.
