Wow!...I just finished watching Le Miz

I rented it from the public Library...it was the 10th anniversy concert version, so I dopn't think it was the actual show...but I was blown away!!!! Colm Wilkinson can't even be matched in his performance as Val Jean...Michael Ball was alos wonderful, as wer Eponine and Javert (can't remember their names right now) I cried like 3 times!! I cried when Eponine died, during Colm's "Bring him Home" and at the end. And it was only a concert!!! I was just wondering if 1. the actual play was entirly sung through or had some speaking. and 2. if there is any available recording of an actual performance, like they have for Cats and Sweeney Todd, one of those filmed stage movies. I really want to see it in its original format. On another note, this makes me really want to see the Pirate Queen (also by Boubil and Schonberg). I might actually take a road trip and watch it on Broadway when it get's there!! anyway, a fanatstic musical, definatly up to par with my friends' rantings! Applause
Sweeney Hyde

1. The show is entirely sung.
2. There is no other filmed version of the musical. The concert version is it, although I REALLY wish there was a real performance.
There are numerous cast recodings, however. There is the Original Broadway cast, the highlights CD, and the Symphonic Recodring, among others. I recomend either the OBC or the Symphonic recording, which uses an whole symphony orchestra instead of a pit orchestra.
olly

It's already on Broadway at the moment. It's been revived.

I wish they had other film versions, it's would've been great to see the OBC filmed on stage!

And me, I'd recommend either the OLC or the recording of the tenth anniversary concert. Don't bother with the OBC; it has little value except that it's easy to find. Not bad, but not good either.

I'd have to disagree, I think the OBC is quite good. The music and ensemble numbers are a lot better. I'd recommend it.

That's weird that you should mention the concert show. I rented that one from Netflix not two weeks ago, and you're right, it's great. Not as good as the actual show, though, with the scenery and character interactions and whatnot. I have a couple of decent bootlegs of the full show (am I allowed to say that? d'oh! ), but I don't think there are any official DVDs. Like so many great shows, it remains confined to the stage.

Don't worry. Once you know everything about the show and stop thinking Eponine is a cool character, people won't make fun of you anymore.
Quique

Don't listen to them.

Eponine is a great character in the musical, in my opinion. Not my fav character but I enjoy her. There's nothing wrong with liking her. I'm glad you enjoyed the concert. Smile

Yes, the concert is hot, buit I really wish they would make a filmed stage version of it as well.

Well, it wasn't so much that, but your bolding, your lack of coherent formatting, the fact that you called it "sung through" and a "play" in the same sentence, and your overall lack of simple research.
music is my life!!!

i remember when i got that dvd out of my school library, i was absolutely astounded by it! that's what got me interested (ok, OBSESSED Wink ) with les mis and musicals in general! I loved the music but when i found out they'd cut a couple of the songs (eponine's errand, the robbery - the basic intro to eponine and marius) i was a little disappointed but i understood why they cut the songs - because of the length of the fab show! I can't believe i'm gonna audition for my local theatre group's version of it in 2 yrs! Yay! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Sorry, I guess I was rather being fangirly, but I can explain my other problems. I bolded the questions so people wouldn't skip over them if they speed read through my 'drooling', which I admit it was. I'm just messy about formatting in general...it's a bad habit of mine. I'm also rather lazy about research sometimes...I read the cast list in the video credits previously but I wasn't really in the mood to look it up again. I also wasn't aware that it was offensive to put "play" and "sung through" in the same sentence...anyway, I promise I'll try not to be fangirly anymore and do better research... truce? She saw Les Mis for the first time and really loved it.
Robin Hood

Oh my, I felt exactly the same way when I first saw the TAC . . . . good thing I didn't have access to a computer then, my joy and excitement probably would have come out as pure drool. Laughing

As for other recordings . . . here are some links to places where you can listen to them (but not download):

The Original French Cast

This is where it all started . . . you will notice that it only has parts of the current score and some songs are switched around i.e. Fantine sings IDAD set to the tune of OMO. And keep a sharp ear out for Disco!Amis. Laughing (See Les Amis De l'ABC to find out)

The lyrics on this one are gorgeous, it most places better than the English translation, go here for a translation of these lyrics.

The Original London Cast

This is a highlights version of what Les Mis sounded like when it first came out in London. Points of interest are as follows: I Saw Him Once, Cosette's only solo that was cut soon after it came out, a crying shame really. Little People, a cocky little solo of Gavroche's, which was finally cut after being moved around all over the place, including at one point right after Drink With Me. d'oh!

This one has the same Valjean, Marius, and hair buying lady (Crone) as the TAC.

The Original Broadway Cast

This is what it sounded like when it came to Broadway in the 1980's, it has a few more songs than the TAC, and has the same Valjean, Enjolras and Cosette as the TAC. Bit of trivia, I just saw the Mme. Thenardier from this recording live in LA last July. She was still doing it. Shocked Any guesses as to why? Razz Laughing

The Complete Symphonic Recording

This recording includes every note of the show as it stood when it was made, very much worth listening to for all the new parts, unfortunately it is one of the most soul-less of the recordings due to the facts that none of the performers were recorded together because they were all piece-meal from different countrys. This has the awesome Philip Quast, who plays Javert in the TAC.

The Duisburg Cast

One of the two German cast recordings, fortunately there is no ready translation to this version as the German translation is atrocious, or at least so I've heard. It is nice to listen to though.

BTW, if you liked the Valjean from the TAC, you should enjoy listening to him playing the Phantom, not just that, he plays it with Rebecca Caine who is the Cosette in the OLC with him. Smile

Oh yeah, do you like Lord of the Rings? A fan group put together a funny parody of One Day More entitled Pelennor, to celebrate the RotK coming out. You can view it here.

Hope this helps!

God bless,

~Robin Hood

I'm currently looking for the castlist of the TAC and which productions they were in. There used to be a site like that (years ago), but I can't find it now.

Anyway, I also love the concert. My review is as follows:

Wilkinson: Shaky at the start. He redeemed himself with "Who Am I?" then was amazing for the rest of the concert. His "Bring Him Home" was the best version he has ever done.

Quast: I didn't like him for the longest time, simply because his timing was... odd at points ("Confrontation" is an example). I'm still not a big fan of him, but he did do a good job. "Stars" was excellent.

Ball: Boring, boring, boring. I've never liked his Marius. The guy who did it on the OBC is better.

Lea: I prefer Frances as Eponine. Lea has a good voice and a nice approach to the character, but (to me) she didn't SOUND like Eponine. I must admit, she makes Ball almost listenable.

The Thanardiers: Loved both of them. I'm just trying to figure oout what they're talking about during the applause after "Master of the House."

Fantine: Beautiful voice. The only thing I didn't enjoy was how youthful she sounded. Compare her with the Fantine on the OBC. That Fantine sounds like she's worn out from life. All the same, good show.

Enjoras: AWESOME! He stole the show! Enough said.

The children: Very cute, adorable and sang well. I feel sorry for little Cosette, when that balloon exploded (I thought it was a gunshot at first). Litle Gavroche... what can I say? I LOVE his accent!

The Bishop... who is he? I've seen his face before...

8 stars out of ten.

Andy.

Wilkinson originated Valjean in London and on Broadway; Quast was Javert in in Australia and Manchester and on the UK tour; Henshall was Fantine in London; Ball originated Marius in London; Salonga was Eponine on Broadway around 1993; Kuhn and Maguire originated the roles of Cosette and Enjolras on Broadway; Armstrong originated Thenardier in London; and Galloway I'm not sure, but I think she played Mme T in London at some point.

Of the ensemble and cameos, the ones I remember off the top of my head are:
The chain gang was made up of former Valjeans, including Mark McKerracher, Phil Cavill, and Jeff Leyton.
Michael McCarthy was the TAC factory foreman and has played Javert in about every single English-language production you can name.
The hair lady, Beverly Klein, is the same as on the OLC.
Matt Cammelle (TAC Feuilly), Mike Sterling (TAC Lesgles), and Jrme Pradon (TAC Courfeyrac) played Marius in, respectively, London, Manchester, and Paris. Cammelle and David Bardsley (TAC Combeferre) went on to play Enjolras later in the '90s.

From Broadway: Wilkinson, Kuhn, Maguire, Salonga

Actually, it was the same Valjean, Cosette & Eponine as the OLC. Enjolras was played by Michael Maguire (amazing!) on Broadway, another guy (I don't remember his name right now) play Enjy in the OLC.

Jrme Pradon? He was adorable then. He's recently made a career in the niche of "exciting, but completely batsh*t insane guys." Although he's getting out of it now by playing Aragon. (!)

Okay. so basically, you've never seen any versions of this musical, (not play,) whatsoever, besides a recorded concert version, and you're already saying that the people in this version are unmatched? That's going a bit far if you've never even seen it being performed in an actual staged version. I've only heard the OBC cast and some of the OLC, and was lucky enough to see it on tour. But I'm not calling any one of those "unmatched." I'd suggest doing more research, and listening to some of those clips.

By the way Robin Hood, congrats! I saw her too! I had heard the OBC recording before seeing it, and had no idea she was there. I recognized her voice, but was only able to confirm it aftterward. Man, I would've begged for a signing if it were okay with her, had I known she was there. I mean, I had already guessed it was her, but it was too dark to read the program untill afterward when I had to leave. I wanted to stay and meet the cast but my mom made me go with her....

.....Angry woman, did you mean to say Aragorn? I don't know of anything with an "Aragon" in it except "Eragon" played by Ed Speelers in the film. (blah.) The Lord of the Rings character Aragorn has an r in the spelling of the name....

This is what it sounded like when it came to Broadway in the 1980's, it has a few more songs than the TAC, and has the same Valjean, Enjolras and Cosette as the TAC.

Actually, it was the same Valjean, Cosette & Eponine as the OLC. Enjolras was played by Michael Maguire (amazing!) on Broadway, another guy (I don't remember his name right now) play Enjy in the OLC.

I said they were the same as the TAC . . . the person I was replying to had only seen the TAC and I wanted to give her the names of cast members she'd recognize. Sorry for the misunderstanding!

Gwen, thats cool! Unfortunately I saw a noon performance, so I didn't get to meet anyone either. Did you see Ali Etwolt as Cosette? She was an understudy on the tour I saw, but I saw Susanna Nealy Bridges.

Performers do come out the stage door after matinees too.

What did you think of Suzanna? I only saw the tour twice after she joined, and not when she went on as Cosette.

Other people have already posted, so it's a bit unnecessary now, but I put together a list a while ago and just updated it to post here. It doesn't include the chorus, because there's loads of them and my attention span isn't limitless. I'm not guaranteeing any dates, because one or two were based on only snippets of information and some people might have actually understudied the part and not been honest in their biographies. If you notice that I've missed someone out, or can amend or add in any way, feel free. Anyway, here goes:

Okay. so basically, you've never seen any versions of this musical, (not play,) whatsoever, besides a recorded concert version,. and you're already saying that the people in this version are unmatched? That's going a bit far if you've never even seen it being performed in an actual staged version. I've only heard the OBC cast and some of the OLC, and was lucky enough to see it on tour. But I'm not calling any one of those "unmatched." I'd suggest doing more research, and listening to some of those clips.

I'm usually not like this, but it comes out every once in a blue moon...
and it appears I've spelled the word "people" wrong....*goes to correct*

Once again I apologize for being too fangirly. I guess I shouldn't post right after watching a show, in any format! Laughing I guess what I should've said was that I thought Wilkinson set extremely high standards for the role and it's probably hard for any actor, past or present, to attain those standards. I'll take your advice and watch more clips and soundtrack bits, as I dpon't live anywhere near where Les Mis is currently showing...but I will try to see it sometime when it is more accessible!

Nonsense. The soundtrack to the 1998 movie goes up on ebay all the time.

Aww . .. really? Crying or Very sad I thought they only did meet and greet at the evening performances. *sigh*

I liked her, of course I was sitting in the way back and could hardly see a thing, she sounded nice though. Smile The one think I didn't like (probably not her fault though) was the staging for AHFOL, they're supposed to be in love, and they stand like, three feet apart for the whole song. d'oh!

Also I was a bit surprised to see that the role she usually played was one of the old crones. Confused I hadn't realized how young the overall cast was. Do you know if, in the original production, everyone was age appropriate? I mean at least for the Bishop and the hair-and-necklace ladies.

God bless,

Actors do get out for food and errands between shows. They're not holed up all day, and they don't leave expressly to meet the fans. Not everyone leaves the theatre (some nap or email), but most do.

That role is always the Cosette understudy track.

The Lord of the Rings is not a franchise--it's a highly respected and beloved vast literary work.

You may not like to call it one, but it's a franchise now. When you can get Frodo codpieces and Legolas earrings, it's a franchise, regardless of how vast and respected its origins.

As is Les Misrables.

Does that mean that you have a visual recording?

Is it possible for you to share it with another hopelessly adicted Les Mis-fangirl?
