Young Cosette's outfit?? Please help!

Hi everyone,

I am hoping you can help me. My 8 year daughter is auditioning to do a solo in our local theatre. She is singing 'Castle on a cloud.' I would like her to look the part as I think it would be more emotive! I have been wracking my brains as to what to dress her in. Does anyone have any ideas as to what she should weat and if need be, tips on how make it look old?

Any advise would be Greatly appreciated!

Also, she has been practising it with an old fashioned rag doll in her arms - which she hugs at the appropriate time and it does look good - but what do you think???

Kind regards,

Sophie

I wouldn't recommend using costumes or props for an audition-- If you really want to give off the Cosette vibe, just hint at it. Stay away from things Cosette wouldn't wear (don't dress her up too cutesy like pink bows and a big dress).

Thanks for the replies guys - I wouldn't normally dress her for an audition, but the auditioner expects to see the finished piece - i.e, choriography, costume, etc. The acst he chooses for the show perform 2 weeks later with no other input whatsoever. That is why he needs to see the finished article. Competitoin is Fierce, at least 1,500 auditioning and apparently they are all dressed for the part as our local theatre is very prestigious and it would be an honour indeed for any child to perform there.
SO, please, any advice would be greatly appreciated as I only have 2 days left - I didn't realise until last yesterday that everyone was getting dressed up ....... help please x

Perhaps those more seasoned around here can correct me if I'm wrong, but "Young Cosette" clothes are pretty easy ... basically, they're just rags. Preferably brown, but as long as they're not bright colors, not necessarily brown. If you have any ill-fitting old clothes you can cut up a little and put on your kid, that should work. A skirt which is long on your daughter is a must (long because of the time period ... it's acceptable if it looks as though she's slightly outgrowing it), and a too-big t-shirt ... if you have a brown t-shirt, you can cut off the very top (you know, the collar seam) and the very ends of the sleeves (so as to show as little "tailoredness" and stitching as possible). You could even tea-stain a white t-shirt and cut it as described above.

Hope I was helpful.

Yes, and a simple Google Image Search reveals you are correct.
music is my life!!!

when i was in food glorious food a few years ago i wore a t-shirt that had holes in it and was too big, and ripped trousers that were a little too tight. i had patches sewn on them, too. does that help?
