YOUR Dream Cast

We all know that in the late '90s, the Les Mis 10th Anniversary Concert was held, featuring the "Dream Cast."

Here is a little thread where you can post your own dream cast for Les Mis. There's only a couple of rules.

1. Don't worry about filling in all the minor roles. Just be sure to cast the roles I have down, and add others only if you want to.

2. You can cast anyone you like in the roles; they don't ever have to have been in Les Mis at all.

3. But professional actors only, i.e. no casting yourself or your cousin's boyfriend's lovechild.

4. Disagreements are fine, but no outright insulting someone's cast.

5. Have fun with it!

Okay, here's mine.

Jean Valijean...John Owen Jones
Javert...Robert Westenberg
Fantine...Lea Salonga
Thenardier...Chip Zien
Mme Thenardier...Joanna Gleason
Cosette...Eden Riegel
Eponine...Coleen Sexton
Marius Pontmercy...James Marsden
Enjolras...Zach Braff
Grantaire...Neil Patrick Harris

Damn, I've edited this a lot!
mastachen

Kind of a dead horse thread, but I'll play.

Jean Valjean: John Owen-Jones
Javert: Brian Stokes Mitchell
Fantine: Lea Salonga
Thernardier: Nathan Lane
Mdm. T: Jenny Galloway
Eponine: Phoebe Strole
Marius: Aaron Tveit
Enjolras: Aaron Lazar
Cosette: Marissa McGowan

I got more in my head too!

My cast filled with TV/movie stars

Jean Valjean: Treat Williams
Javert: Hugh Jackman
Fantine: Catherine Zeta-Jones
Thernardier: Robin Williams
Mdm T: Reba McEntire
Eponine: Maggie Gyllenhaal
Marius: ?
Enjolras: Ewan McGregor
Cosette: Kristen Bell
psych_out

Valjean: John Owen-Jones
Javert: Philip Quast
Fantine: Lea Salonga
Thenardier: ? (No particular preference)
Mme. Thenardier: Jenny Galloway
Eponine: Sutton Foster
Marius: Hugh Panaro (I love Michael Ball, but his vibratto is getting to me...)
Cosette: Rebecca Caine
Enjolras: Aaron Lazar
EponineMNFF

Valjean: Randal Keith
Javert: Robert Hunt
Fantine: Lea Salonga
Thenardier: Chip Zien
Mme. Thenardier: Jenny Galloway
Eponine: Celia Keenan-Bolger
Marius: Daniel Bogart
Cosette: Ali Ewoldt
Enjolras: Victor Wallace

... So in short, the 3NT combined with the revival cast. The ultimate cast of nostalgia for me. Haha.
Brunnhilde

Jean Valjean... John Owen-Jones
Javert... Michael McCarthy (as long as Philip tortures us by not singing it)
Fantine...Lea Salonga (cannot say other - she's my fave Fantine)
Thenardier...Can't we have Alun Armstrong again? Very Happy
Mme Thenardier... Jenny Galloway
Cosette... ? Anybody but Judy Kuhn.
Eponine... No idea for professional. I adore the Long Island High School's ponine, her voice is incredible and she acts like a professional. But as I see, Frances still looks very good. Like a girl.
Marius Pontmercy... hm... maybe Adam Jacobs
Enjolras... Martin Pasching. He should learn it in English. He's most book-like Enjy I've seen.

In a movie:

JVJ: How about Tommy Lee Jones? See Melquiades Estrada and No Country. He is a strong, silent, honest type and absolutely can act. I'd say Robert de Niro, but he's too old now.

Javert: well... Alan Rickman would be frightening. And he can sing and has a nice low voice.
Or Jean Reno. He played a lot of (obsessed) policemen... and is sooo very French.

Fantine: Charlize Theron. Beautiful, talented, blonde, fragile.

ponine: Natalie Portman. Make her bad teeth and greasy hair. And normal ponine clothes, not the Red Asia Argento Ball Gown: Recommended In Case Of Heroic Death On Barricade.

Cosette: I dunno... somebody very young and nice. Maybe the girl from Juno.

Thnardier: how about Gary Oldman? He played a lot of rats (see Lon, True Romance...)

Madame Thnardier: how about Rutanya Alda? She was a young character actress in the 70's, so she may be in the perfect age for Madame T. And she's totally underrated. (See the Tarantino rule: get forgotten character actors, give them a good role, and they'll shine)

Marius: an absolute newcomer and NOT american

Enjolras: no idea... somebody really beautiful and blonde.
(Well, I don't like Hayden C too much, but in the case he would be forced to ACT, he could do it. He was pretty in RotS.)
flying_pigs

Done this many times but it always seems to change so I'll post again!

Valjean: John Owen-Jones
Javert: Philip Quast
Fantine: Kerry Ellis
Mme Thnardier: Melanie La Barrie
M Thnardier: Alun Armstrong
Enjolras: David Thaxton
Marius: Hayden Tee
Cosette: Julia Moller
Eponine: Marissa McGowan
Grantaire: Jeff Nicholson

...basically the 2005-06 London cast with various add-ons!

I like some of this. JOJ is good, obviously, and Alan Rickman could possibly maybe work. How would Judy and Brittany Snow as Cosette and Eponine work in anyone's wildest imagination, though? As good a Cosette as she was in her younger days, Judy's 50 years old by now. And Brittany Snow? ... Don't you think having a 50-year-old Cosette and a markedly annoying perfect-faced blonde as Eponine would undermine, basically, the entire plot?

Kristen Bell as Cosette!

Put that BFA from Tisch into use!
aworthyboyishe

True.... disregarding Judy's age of course. d'oh!

Although.. I personally find Eponine to markedly annoying anyways.

Brittany Snow can't handle it. Neither can Victor Wallace. I'm sorry but that guy was still going through puberty at the end of the 3NT.

Edited because:

a) I decided I really liked the racial continuity of having Lea (Filipino) as Fantine and Ali (half-Filipino) as Cosette. And, the more I listen to Ali's Cosette on YouTube, the more I like it.
b) After hearing Stokes in the Hollywood Bowl concert, I found that I think his voice (a powerful bass) would best complement JOJ's (almost equally powerful, but extremely tenor-y) Valjean. If Colm were my Valjean (which he is not), Philip Quast would be my Javert.
c) As cute as Victor Wallace is, he doesn't hold a candle vocally to Aaron Lazar. Thanks, YouTube.

Edits explained because:
a) I am bored.

Monsieur D'Arque

While we're at it, Jim Sturgess as Marius. He's about the only person of the age and type who could sell a movie like this, and still sing well.
Yakko

Jean Valjean- Alexander Gemignani

Javert- Philip Quast

Fantine- Kerry Ellis

Thenardiers- Jenny Galloway and Cameron Blakeley(just for that kiss he did during Beggers at the feast)

Cosette- Julle Moller

Maruis-Carlos Marn

Eponine- Collen Sexton

Enjolras- now this one I'm not sure about this one.... it's too bad that Gary Mauer and Anthony Warlow are too old for the role....Would I be hated if I said Drew Sarich???

Well it's all I can think off.
lesmisloony

Am I seriously the only person on the planet who doesn't see ANY hotness in Jim Sturgess?

(I've been fighting it for a while, but I have to admit that I can totally see Elijah Wood as a rather Hugo-y Marius...)
mastachen

I saw him in 21 and thought he was a horrible actor.

Not hated. But intensely stared at in bewilderment.

YES. YES. THANK YOU MY DEAR. Ix-nay on the urgess-Stay!
Maybe that's just because I hated Across the Universe.

Yakko wrote:

...Yes.
Well, not hated. But I would be confused. Because I thought Sarich was a really sucky Enjolras.
Actually, the only role I liked him in was Grantaire. His Javert was passable. Otherwise ... no.
Brunnhilde

Drew for Grantaire, that's totally ok. But not Enjy. *is horrified, although only seen the Final Battle on youtube... but that was more than enough.*
Well, he did a honest job as Javvie, but the first thing what makes me accept as singer as a *real* Javert, is a strong, rich, velvety (bass-)baritone. And Drew is a tenor, with a Graham Clark-like voice color. And he's young, hyperactive and skinny. But he's veeery slashy. *dreamy sigh* That Confrontation with Alex... I wouldn't dare to flirt with that bear. *adores Alex bear*
And I always giggle from that octave spring and scream...

Brian's voice is amazing. I am bass-obsessed, in case somebody doesn't know yet. Razz And he really looks Javert-ish. He has that "serious" and "predator" look. He has the authority, but he is not lost enough at the end. I prefer Philip Quast's "lost puppy" look. And Brian didn't undo his hair. He really should have done it.

OMG Philip still owns me. I have a lot Javvies I love, but Philip is... Javert incarnate. Or his avatar. Wink

My dear, I like the way you think. Stokes and PQ are quite at the top of my list. Almost tied.
I agree that Brian looks really Javert-ish. I think he's incredibly good-looking, but in the way that totally fits Javert. And the fact that he's light African-American sort of make half-gypsy a little bit believable?

See, like, I can't really compare them to each other, because their voices are soooo different. PQ's is more piercing, and Brian's is ... much, much deeper. I guess for me, if Brian's a 10, Philip is a 9.95, because I really really enjoy the bass thing on Javert, and because, in the same way that Philip owns you, Brian totally owns me.

Ooh, and you'd be able to answer this, Brunnhilde ... was Philip wearing a wig in the TAC? Or did he really have ridiculously long hair? Because if it was real, that would be WAY COOL.
Yakko

I don't know I liked Drew's interpretation of Enjolras.... Since he played him as a man who how jumps to conclusions without thinking of the aftermath....oh god... d'oh! what the hell I'm thinking.....Would it feel better if I said Christian Mller?
Brunnhilde

No, it was certainly a wig. Philip has short and curly hair. But that wig was sooooo... *melts into puddle* I want to touch it!

Not to mention it changed its color from chestnut to silver blonde. Within a day! In ODM, he was still brown, and after the pause, silver... Razz He learnt something from Valjean. (At least he should changed it before Stars...)

I'm totally obsessed with Philip's hair. Especially when it's undone.

He should wear it that long. And sideburns. Although he looks hot with his original hair, too, but this was so... OMFG, I'm in love. And those sideburns... *huggles Javvie*

And that is one of the many problems with Drew's Enjolras. Because Enjolras is not someone who jumps to conclusions without thinking of the aftermath. Hugo repeats like a hundred times that he is a great commander and he doesn't leave anything to improvisation. And he is perfectly aware of the consequences of everything he does.
So, even if you like Drew's portray of an irresponsible, toughless, frenetic and nervous revolutionary boy, well, that's not Enjolras. It's someone else. And it belongs in another story. Non in Les Mis.

Oh, and I know this is a lost cause, but Javert is not a gipsy (this fight against Norman Denny & co. is exhausting). And even if he were, gipsies aren't black, they are caucasian, but what the hell...

He isn't? I could have sworn he was in my translation (yes, I have read the book). BigR usually knows more than me about this stuff though... so what is he?
Brunnhilde

Gypsy!Javert is a mistranslation. It has something to do with confusing "bohme" (see Puccini, La Bohme) and "bohmien" = Gypsy. Javert's kins were rogues, not gypsies. And his mother being a fortune teller, the translator thought Gypsy...

So Javvie is French. Maybe. Wink

Ah, thank you! It's so nice to have internet compatriots who can read the brick in multiple languages.
*tucks knowledge into brain for future use*
music is my life!!!

JVJ - John Owen Jones (I saw him last year - he's AMAZING!)
Javert - Philip Quast (it's his voice - sends shivers down my spine!)
Fantine - Ruthie or Lea, or qualities from both (I love Ruthies voice, and acting on the TAC but Lea makes me cry when i watch IDAD) I saw Sophia Ragavelas as Fantine and she made the part stand out to me Smile
Young Cosette - the girl on the making of LM step by step. i think her voice is perfect!
Mdm Then - The current London Mdm T, who was the Factory Girl on the TAC!
Then - Who can beat Alun Armstrong?
Eponine - i love Linzi Hateley's voice, but i prefer Lea's acting, and even frances'.... did i just say that?!?!?! Shocked
Marius - Jon Lee... LOVE YOU!!!!
Enjy - I liked the guy who was Enjy last year (London 07 [May]) the one with the small beard... hehe. he was fab!
Gavroche - Adam Searles from the TAC, if he still had his amazing unbroken voice! I love his "Liar!!"
Cosette - Gina Beck, or the original Cosette, because their voices are kinda similar but their acting is very good!

Everyone else can come from the TAC, except factory girl and other peeps who are on my cast list! I love the factory girl who was fighting with Lea in the factory - she was funny Rolling Eyes

Thought this would be the best place to put this, as they are both in my dream cast ...
