20th Anniversary Tribute...

As promised, I will be sharing my live original London cast recording of Les Misrables with you guys, as a way for us to pay tribute to this amazing show that has given back to us its fair share of entertainment, inspiration, and love. To some of us, it's like an old friend and to others like an exciting new adventure, but I think we can all agree that it is, more than anything; a reflection of human nature at both its worst and its best. And as Mr. Edward Behr stated at the conclusion of his own written tribute, Les Misrables: History In the Making;

"What the show demonstrates, to haunting, memorable words and music, is that we are all, in short, part of the Les Misrables family - the family of humankind."

I will be sharing one song everyday from this recording, which is from the original Barbican run, starting tomorrow and concluding with the "Finale" which will be posted on 8 October, 2005, the day of the show's 20th London anniversary performance. I must stress that the quality is not good, but should still be enjoyable to us die-hard fans.

In the meantime, either comments on this or what the show has meant/given back to you, are more than welcomed.

Take care,

-Enrique =)

Woo hoooo.. can't wait. Very Happy yey Well done Quique!

Just hope I can download them. My computer is very picky. I tried to download them from somewhere else but it wouldn't let me.

I have this, and it owns. Very Happy Rebecca Caine especially far surpasses her OLC performance.

Very much looking forward to it Quique Smile

OLC Live...

Here's the first track, it's the entire prologue including Valjean's soliloquy. Being the audiophile that I am, the sound quality to me, is very icky, but I'm sure you'll all enjoy it as it is a very rare and very old recording. I didn't tamper with it at all, which means I didn't remove any hiss or stuff like that cause that can often times further ruin an already bad sounding audio. Try turning down the bass and pump the volume up, that might help make it sound better. It's in mp3 format and if you want full fidelity, simply convert the mp3 to uncompressed .WAV format and it should make it sound better as mp3's are compressed.

There are two links to the same file, in case one reaches its download limit. Enjoy! Very Happy

Haha, you don't get back the quality when you uncompress. You lose it, it's lost.

It's true you don't "get it back." But you do increase the dynaminc range. Trust me, my ears say so and they're too Spock-like to miss something like that, heehee! Smile And you MUST agree or...

What?! You know exactly what I mean by that and it has nothing to do with anything inappropriate. You know my little usual thing of being playful and pretending to lock those who don't agree with me in imaginary birdcages, LOL! I sincerely don't know where you got the idea I meant something "inappropriate." I never say that to people who have no idea what I'm talking about, since it can be taken to mean something perverted. But I've been playful with you before and you've responded positively. I apologize if I offended you, but I assure you I didn't mean to communicate anything "inappropriate" with what I said.

And I don't write inappropriate things in my posts. It's not my fault this board has become ultra sensitive and can't take a joke as of late.

You mean who's going to be in the 20th anniversary cast, right? Cause that's on 8 October, 2005. Yes, I think Michael Ball is going to play Valjean, but I could be wrong.

The recording I'm sharing is the original London cast live from 1985, which explains its icky sound, hehe. Smile

I think that my face would not be pretty, and Michael Ball would not be safe.

Seriously though, I doubt JOJ would let them do that without kicking up a fuss, and Mikey needs to know he can't just waltz in there whenever he feels like it, especially not now we have a decent Valjean.

Quique: sorry I appear to have mis-got you there, I was rather drunk when I wrote that so it's pretty easy to misinterpret stuff.

I don't think Michael is taking John-Owen Jones' part, but I'm pretty certain he's going to be there in *some* way. Afterall, CM did cast this years cast with the 20th Anniversary in mind. Thats why its apparently so great this year. (I don't use apparently with sarcasm... its just I havent seen them yet).

JOJ and Michael are fairly good friends I think, so I doubt they'd pull the rug from under JOJ's feet without at least some consultation. But tbh I think Michael's had his pie for the moment unless he does take the roll full-time, and they may well have some guesting Valjeans at the 21st but unless JOJ leaves the cast before then (which is possible, if horrendously annoying and I will not let him do it) then I doubt someone else will be in the principal spot.

Roger Allam and Colm Wilkinson are really good.

Just actually read your post with my eyes open Quique ( Razz ) and they're hardly doing anything for the 20th, I think there are going to be some school edition kids in the chorus or something weird but I've heard nothing to suggest that Michael Ball will be there or that anything important is happening at all.

I thought you were talking about the 21st before for some reason, which is supposed to be big.

I don't even recall that version of the overture being on the OLC album. I know it was different then the one used now but the one heard on that mp3 is definatly not what ended up on the CD. my how many changes that production went through!

Update...

Oh, honies babes, I apologize for the delay (I'm becoming known for that, aren't I? Twisted Evil)

Anyhoooooo! Whenever I get ridiculously busy, I stay away from the Les Mis forum, because let's face it, I am a wacko Mizzie and you'll have to pry me off the computer and I'll never get anything done! GRRRRR! Mad

So, I limit myself to the orgy of stupid that is the Misc. forum. J/K!

I'm making-up for my lack of updates by providing the whole first disc of the OLC live recording, which ends at "Stars." I'm just getting done with the 2nd disc and that will be up soon (Soon in Quique terms = next year. J/K Again! Heeheehee! Um...OK, I..I'll stop. Confused)

So here's the linkie for disc 1, which is a total of 83 Mb. and encoded in mp3 format, all packaged nice n' neatly within a ZIP archive (God, I sound like an infomercial).

Thanks so much for posting these, Quique! That's so awesome of you. I do have a question, though... Valjean's Soliloquy and "Who Am I?" aren't there, so were they not in the show at this time? Or were the files just bad?

I agree with you, Fantine... I was never really a big fan of Patti Lupone (or Roger Allam) on the OLC, but after hearing them here, I'm changing my opinions!

No, I don't know the exact date this was recorded, but am almost willing to bet it's one of the last previews. All I know is that it's definitely recorded inside the RSC's Barbican, it's the full OLC and whoever recorded it is a lucky dog, heehee!

I have no idea. No matter how hard you try to make out what they're singing, it's impossible for most of the recording. Sad

If anyone out there knows where I can obtain the original lyrics heard on this recording, that have since changed, I'd be eternally grateful...I'm sure I won't be the only one. Smile

OK, time for a rant. Twisted Evil

I believe this recording would've been of much, much better quality if...

...I would've been more strict with my trading policy (actually, if I would've had one at all!) at the time I arranged the trade (1995) for this recording.

...I had a strict policy that included NO HIGH-SPEED DUBBED cassette tapes allowed! (High-speed dubbing warps the cassette tape's magnetic band where all the audio information is stored.)

...I would've allowed only high quality cassette tapes, not the many pathetic, cheap, bargain tapes I've recieved during the 90's through trading, before home CD burning was all the rage. This recording was given to me using name-brand tapes, but weren't the best type for this sort of live recorded material.

...digital audio conversion, transfer, and storage would've been more common for home computer systems of the day, allowing me to at least convert the analogue signal to digital and archive the recording on CD immediately upon recieving it, therefore preventing it from the inevitable quality loss that comes from playing an analogue casette tape over and over and over again, throughout the years.

...I wouldn't have gone through the hell I went through during my early 20's, which detached me from Les Mis, causing me to dump all my recordings into a box and store them down in a dusty basement for the next 5 years!

See, I rant about everything under the sun. Smile People over at a certain forum seemed to think it was limited to the few bozo's there.

Anyway, I'm in a bad mood again this day, since I still can't locate that "One Day More" backing. Crying or Very sad

No, there is not to be a 20th anniversary concert unfortunately. There's going to be a regular performance at the Queens Theatre with a special Les Mis school edition thingy at the end where some lucky selected students will perform bits from the show.

Gosh!!!!!!!!! Am I late?

YES!!!! I am late..... Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Had I been here a week earlier, there would be no need to bother Quique again! But, Quique, may i ask, could there be any chance for you to transmit it again? I do love Les Miz very much but have no chance to meet LM with my own eyes!!! (pity I missed Colm's LM in Shanghai Crying or Very sad ) i know this OLC live is very precious, but could you please upload it again?

i know it's not easy to upload them to 'yousendit' and i do appreciate what you have done, but i am so sorry to bother you again Sad

Thank you very much!

Heehee! Don't worry, it's no bother at all. Smile

I'm crazy, I share recordings most people would only give away over their dead bodies, haha. In other words...I LOVE sharing Les Mis stuff. Twisted Evil

I've just started uploading the first zip file, which is pretty large in size, so it'll be posted in about an hour. I'll then follow that with the other two zips. To the rest of the members patiently awaiting the 4th and last zip file with the rest of act 2, it'll come after I post these.

Oh, and welcome, by the way. Very Happy

OLC Live...

OK, here's disc 1 again...

EDIT: If you have problems playing "Soliloquy - What Have I Done?", "The Trial - Who Am I?", and "Do You Hear the People Sing?" try renaming the files WITHOUT the question marks. I found that upon renaming those files without the question mark solves the problem. In place of a question mark, you might see a dash instead ("Who Am I_"), same thing, rename the file without the dash. If they still won't play, PM me and I'll upload those files alone and provide a link to them here.

Here's disc 2 - part 1...

Most of you have already downloaded these 3 files I'm posting right now. They leave off at "On My Own," so please make sure you don't already have these three, before trying to download.

disc 2 part 2...?

Wait.. I'm so confused... is On My Own the last song available or was disc 2, part 2 the remaining file? *scratching head*

I'm so behind.

Quique

Yes, "On My Own" is the last song I shared.

The others are coming, I know I've said that before and have kept ya'll waiting. I apologize for that. I will try to not say anything until I'm sure I can get it done by the time I say I will.

It's just that...damn! A bad sounding recording sounds REALLY bad when transferred and converted to stinky Mp3 format! Mad The other songs I must have done about 5 times and am still unable to get it to sound decent enough to enjoy. The songs after "On My Own" sound so bad, they can barely be recognized as being from Les Mis. I'll try one more time and if they sound the same, I'll just post them and won't worry about it anymore.

It's hard being a perfectionist. Crying or Very sad

I'm new and the downloads have expired =/. I have the first one, but not the second, the one with 'on my own'.

I ADORE Frances Ruffelle and would really appreciate it if you could upload the 'on my own' one again =].

thanks.
