Test Your Knowledge

How big of a fan freak are you? How much do you know about this show?

I will start off with simple questions...

1. In which cities and theatres did the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd U.S. national tours premiere in?

2. How many official English langauge albums are there?

3. Who succeeded Frances Ruffelle in the role of Eponine in the original Broadway production?

4. What does the actress that plays Fantine do after her character dies?

5. How many Spanish translations of the show have there been?

Feel free to post your own questions as well if you'd like.
Orestes Fasting

1. TVAW probably knows this, but I don't.

2. Five, not counting that weird studio recording with Claire Moore or the Chicago Musical Revue travesty. OLC, OBC, CSR, TAC, and Manchester highlights.

3. Natalie Toro? [Edit: No. Kelli James. My bad.]

4. She's the workman in the green coat in DYHTPS and the barricade scenes.

5. Three. For the productions in Madrid, Buenos Aires, and Mexico City.
Orestes Fasting

6. Who was the first actor to sing the role of Javert in the updated French version of the show? [i.e. the version used on the PRC, not the OFC.]

7. How many of the German-language casts were recorded?

8. Of the following languages, which one has the show NOT been translated into: Portugese, Finnish, Afrikaans, Mauritian Creole, Korean, Estonian, Icelandic?

9. In the English version of the show, Eponine tells Valjean that the letter is from "a boy at the barricades, sir, in the rue de Villette." In the updated French version, what street does she tell him the barricade is in?

10. Which two official recordings feature different actors singing each role on different tracks?

[Later I can even ask some non-language-related trivia, fancy that. XD Beware trick questions, by the way.]
The Very Angry Woman

Orestes Fasting wrote:

I don't actually know the theatres, but they were Boston, LA, and Miami. (?) If not Miami, it was another Florida city.

11. Who is the only American actress to play Young Eponine but not Young Cosette?
Quique

Oh dear. Confused

6. Who was the first actor to sing the role of Javert in the updated French version of the show? [i.e. the version used on the PRC, not the OFC.]

Patrick Rocca

7. How many of the German-language casts were recorded?

Two. The Austrian and Duisburg productions each have an official cast album. (Ahhh...EDIT - three. Isn't there an official, but super rare, Berlin highlights album?)

8. Of the following languages, which one has the show NOT been translated into: Portugese, Finnish, Afrikaans, Mauritian Creole, Korean, Estonian, Icelandic?

Creole

9. In the English version of the show, Eponine tells Valjean that the letter is from "a boy at the barricades, sir, in the rue de Villette." In the updated French version, what street does she tell him the barricade is in?

Have no idea. Completely forgot.

10. Which two official recordings feature different actors singing each role on different tracks?

The 2003 (or is it 2004) Prague recording and...have no idea, lol.
Quique

Sh*t. I completely underestimated y'all, lol. These are good questions.

11. Who is the only American actress to play Young Eponine but not Young Cosette?

Have no friggen clue. I'm terrible with casts.

Btw...I'll reveal the answers to mine after a few people have had a chance to answer them.

6. No. Rocca wasn't the first.

7. Yep. The Berlin highlights were recorded, but never released.

8. Nope.

9. -

10. Well, one out of two... Laughing

I believe the answer is Afrikaans.
Mademoiselle Lanoire

Oh yeah, 6 - Hans Peter Janssens (sp?)

Is this because the actor who played Javert at the Palais des Sports was actually not Jacques Mercier?
The Very Angry Woman

Mademoiselle Lanoire wrote:

No, come to think of it, it was whoever was the first Javert in the billingual Quebec production.
Mademoiselle Lanoire

Ugh, you're right. The Montreal production was several years earlier.
What Is This Feeling?

this probably isnt hard my questions:
1.
Where was the 10th Anniversery Concert held? and don't just say the city.
2. Which actress from the OBC, revived her role as........... before the tour ended in New York?
Orestes Fasting

1. The Royal Albert Hall in London.

2. Jennifer Butt returned to Les Mis as Mme Thenardier for the 3rd national tour, which ended in St Louis, not New York. (If you mean returned to play the same role in NYC, the only OBC cast member who did that was Terrence Mann.)

(Heh, you guys are getting warmer on #6. Though, for nitpicking's sake, the Montreal production was in 1991, just a few months before the Paris revival. And Lanoire's right--there was never an Afrikaans translation, as the South African production was in English.)
The Very Angry Woman

To answer mine...

Ashley Rose Orr is the only American actress to only play Young Eponine and not Young Cosette. She was a fill-in and (I believe) was only 6 years old.

1. In which cities and theatres did the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd U.S. national tours premiere in?

TVAW was right...

1st National - Shubert Theatre, Boston
2nd National - Shubert Theatre, Los Angeles
3rd National - Performing Arts Center, Tampa Bay

2. How many official English langauge albums are there?

Orestes was right...there are 5 official English language cast albums, not counting the freaky ones posted, hehe.

3. Who succeeded Frances Ruffelle in the role of Eponine in the original Broadway production?

Orestes is right again...Kelli James.

4. What does the actress that plays Fantine do after her character dies?

Orestes = correct. Plays a boy on the barricades.

5. How many Spanish translations of the show have there been?

Correcto...there are 3 different Spanish translations - Madrid, Buenos Aires, and Mexico City.

Too many people think there are 4. Um...people speak Portugese in Brazil. Durrr.

I'll post harder ones later.

Well, I don't know whether he was in the first cast, but he did succeed Normie Rowe in the later run ( and won an Green Room Award). If that counts, then I think there's another one who fills in the blank too. William Zappa was Thenardier in 1989 and reprised the role in the tenth anniversary tour.

No, not really, but here's what's interesting -- they had Braden Danner as the regular Gavroche, RD Robb as the understudy Gavroche, Brandy Brown as the understudy for ALL the kids, and Kelli James as the other cover. I don't know if she ever went on.

The arragement was never repeated, and since then, all the kids have rotated more or less equally.

15. One actress who played the role of Fantine in the original Broadway production was fired. Who is she and for what reason was she fired?

Florence Lacey was fired along with half the cast prior to the show's 10th Broadway anniversary, in an effort to revitalize the show.

16. A certain character in a musical that Alain Boublil attended, served as inspiration for Les Mis. What is the name of this musical and character?

Chuck Wagner - 3rd national tour

Robert Westenberg - Broadway

Answer...

This prison wall backdrop (photo is from the original Los Angeles production - 2nd national tour) and the other was a moving platform that was used during the cafe scenes ("Red and Black" and "Empty Chairs At Empty Tables"). It used the same tracks that the barricade used. It would slide down from the back of the stage onto the revolve (you can barely see it in the above photo as well).

I'll post more questions when I think of some...

- Up until the mid-90's, the role of Gavroche was performed by a young woman in which production?

I suspect the answer you're looking for is Japan. I've heard this rumor before, but I have Japanese programs from 1988, 1990 and 1994 (as well as 1997 and 1998) and all of them list real kids (some of the boys actually look really young).

Name three Scandinavians to appear in Les Mis in the West End (and which roles they played).
Quique

I actually debated whether or not to include that one as I wasn't too sure if it was just a rumor or not.

Though I do recall reading somewhere that they had to cast a young woman due to some type of child labour laws in Japan at the time.

Also, a young woman plays Gavroche on the red Japanese cast recording (or so it sounds like one).

Thanks for the info though. Nice to know that actually wasn't the case.

Here's an easy one. Everybody dig out your playbills: who, strangely enough, is the second cover Enjolras in the Broadway revival?
The Very Angry Woman

I don't have a revival playbill, but aren't they listed alphabetically, regardless of who the stage manager thinks should rank first?
Orestes Fasting

I'm not sure. Most of the other understudies listed seemed consistent with who I'd expect the 1st and 2nd u/s to be, but they fit the alphabetical model too. (Only ones I remember off the top of my head are Robert Hunt and Drew Sarich for Javert, and Nikki Rene Daniels and Haviland Stillwell for Fantine. In order and also alphabetical.)
EponinesRain

This is probably a really really simple question, but I am curious about it myself. I don't actually know the answer. We've been talking a lot in the Lea threads about what the performer for Fantine does after she dies. What happens to Eponine's performer after she dies? And the cast members playing the barricade boys? Do they just play guests at the Wedding Chorale? Yes, I'm a noob to the musical. Embarassed
Orestes Fasting

I'm pretty sure the actress playing Eponine gets to hang out backstage until she comes back on for the finale. The barricade boys play their ghostly selves in Empty Chairs, then they're the wedding guests, then they're back in the DYHTPS reprise.

The Act II ensemble roles are pretty much the same throughout, except the wedding guests and the Turning women. It's in Act I where the fun really is.
The Very Angry Woman

Orestes Fasting wrote:

Yeah, she doesn't do anything on stage. Sutton Foster used to knit or eat donuts.

By the way, a clarification on my earlier question: the understudies are indeed listed alphabetically in the playbill, but a friend-of-a-friend saw the first understudy and confirmed that the actor listed second was still in his regular track. So the question still stands: who's the Broadway revival second cover Enjolras?

By the way, a clarification on my earlier question: the understudies are indeed listed alphabetically in the playbill, but a friend-of-a-friend saw the first understudy and confirmed that the actor listed second was still in his regular track. So the question still stands: who's the Broadway revival second cover Enjolras?

I believe it's Nehal Joshi.

No.

Sarich.

That's odd. I said Joshi even though I looked in my Playbill heh.
Orestes Fasting

Yeah. Someone said she saw Nehal on as Enjolras--and gave him a really good review--and that Drew was still playing Grantaire. I don't know if the rotation thing Drew and Aaron have going on is a special case, but that would suggest that Nehal is, in fact, first u/s.

- Which African American actresses have played Fantine?

- Which Asian actresses have played Eponine both in the U.K. and U.S.?

- Which actor holds the record for most performances as Jean Valjean?

- The physical production used in the Mexico City, Argentina, and Brazilian engagements was originally used in which production?

- Up until the mid-90's, the role of Gavroche was performed by a young woman in which production?

I never provided the answers to these. Here they are...

1. Tonya Dixon (3NT); Melba Moore (Bwy); Thursday Farrar (3NT).

(Is Alexandra Foucard African American? She kinda looks like she could be but not sure. I think I recall reading that she was from India or something like that.)

2. TVAW answered this correctly - Lea Salonga

3. Orestes answered this correctly as well - Craig Schulman

4. It was originally built for the Australian 10th Ann. production.

5. Well, I'm still not sure about the answer to this one. I know that the role was normally played by a woman at some point in Japan though.

Like I posted on page 6:

I suspect the answer you're looking for is Japan. I've heard this rumor before, but I have Japanese programs from 1988, 1990 and 1994 (as well as 1997 and 1998) and all of them list real kids (some of the boys actually look really young).

I'm not doubting you. I said that I'm sure it was played by a woman at some point. I remember reading about it, so I know it happened. It could've been a one time thing for all I know.

But yes, I was wrong in saying it was normally played by a woman for any fixed period of time. I take that back.

Name three Scandinavians to appear in Les Mis in the West End (and which roles they played).

Stig Rossen, Niklas Andersson, Carola and Gunilla Backman are indeed correct.

Other possible answers:
ystein Wiik (he was the first) - Valjean
Myrra Malmberg - Cosette
Orestes Fasting

Hm, I didn't know Carola performed in the West End. I thought she was just on the Scandinavian concert tour.

Double-posting for some French history questions:

What government were the students trying to overthrow? [Name the head of state, type of government, and if you really want to be a smartarse, the government it replaced.]

What real-life figure were the characters of both Valjean and Javert based on?

How did General Lamarque die, and how was the cause of his death related to the concurrent unrest in Paris?

And, extra credit: what is the probable date of Cosette's birth?
Mademoiselle Lanoire

Were the Restoration regime and Louis XVIII in power in 1832? (I know the answers to two of the other questions but I'll leave that for other people to respond to.)

I have one...Which two actresses from the Canadian production (one played young Cosette, and one played Cosette - at the same time) proceeded to perform in Toronto's Mamma Mia (where young Cosette played Sophie, and Cosette played Donna, again, at the same time)?
